Bill Clinton is right. At some point we should give up on trying to plug the leak and just have the Navy use explosives to reconfigure the ocean floor in order to bury the oil. The earth's surface is normally what holds the oil down there, so it's not a stretch to plug it up with matter from the ocean floor- you just need explosives to move it. The fact that Clinton is mentioning it now, means he thinks it's time to do it now.

He did not advocate blowing it up. People need to listen better. What he said, effectively, was that we have a choice.  We can continue using technology to try to plug/block/drain the well OR we can also think about sealing the well by blowing it up. He also expressed caution in the second path, saying that there would be consequences and that he was not educated in that subject. Clinton is quite a bit more reasonable than people in this forum have given him credit for.

The oil was for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics not US. You cant seal it with regular bombs, it will just blow the lid off. Pressures are @ 70 to 100 thousand PSI little bits of rock will not hold it down. I think that would cause more problems than being a solution.

Actually I heard an oil expert today say that not only is this what should be done ... it is probably the only way to stop it...... it has been done in other countries. The other relief well drilling will not work because it is an "open hole" in the earth ... not a pipe anymore. Clinton is right! Take care of shutting the oil off and clean it up!

A nuke isn't a conventional explosive. A conventional explosive is like TNT. The key reason why a nuke would work, while conventional explosives wouldn't is because of the heat. The flash heat will melt and solidify rock/sand, sealing the hole and any cracks.

Using conventional explosives won't seal the hole because the pressure of oil/gas currently being ejected will just force any rocks out of the way. Like I said before though, even a nuke may not work if there are other factors.

@UbiquitousArchive that was what the expert I saw today said ... and that he thought it was nearly 100% that a nuke would work because the heat would seal it with "glass" As I stated also he said since the well head is gone ... it is really the only way ... that the relief wells will not work. I live just a couple of miles from the Gulf so I guess you could say ... I have a vested interest. Where I live has many estuaries and I would hate to see those lost for generations.

Bill wasn't talking about using nukes. He was talking about regular bombs.

There is one problem is BP hasn't released their charts of the sea floor for the general vicinity of the leak. If there is a large amount of methane under the surface, which there most likely is, then an impact by any explosive could release it. Depending on how big the methane reserve is down there would determine whether or not something apocalyptic may occur.

Basically, we are probably damned either way.

An atomic bomb produces temperatures great enough to seal the leak with "glass" and without the radiation or fall out that will be scattered all over the world-The way these idiots have been going I wouldn't be surprised if an explosive was used it would only make the hole as big as the entire gulf itself.I do believe in the end a nuke will be used and I do believe a nuclear missile is the "star" mentioned in Revelation 8:10. You can't use conventional explosives. Chances are pretty much guaranteed it will make the problem far worse.

Even a nuke might not be viable. The reason is because if there is a massive storage of methane gas down there, there is a possibility we could release it all at once. We won't know unless BP releases it's charts on the ocean floor where the leak happened.

Depending on how huge the methane bubble is, it could create a 300 ft tsunami and snuff out oxygen 100+ miles. Apocalyptic.

@UbiquitousArchive I've been thinking along the same lines as you. There are too many variables that could cause this to go VERY wrong. Any explosion could cause the sea floor to shift, causing a massive tidal wave. A catastrophic methane explosion. The tremors could even set off earthquakes near California or god knows where. This is not like controlled demolition of a building, this is 1 mile under the sea, with unfamiliar terrain, and has NEVER been done before. (undersea)
