@1000000ed normally, i'm more about the documentary type sesame street clips with the cool instrumentals where they visit like the pencil factory or something. sometimes, the 'puppet songs' are a bit too much for me (but some are great!) but this one, well, i think it's brilliant in so many ways. the first being that 'cookie' can mean whatever you want it to mean. and their dance moves...perfect. the puppets rock studio 54.

@jrbrook76: The "Elmo" puppet was around since the mid-1970s. It wasn't till the '80s that Elmo became an "official" character on the Street..Problem is Sesame Street likes to recycle puppets because they are expensive to produce. That's why you see an early "Elmo" apperence...

I know, right?! I remember seeing it that year and I guess it must have been 3490, like you said. I was 13 and still keeping tabs on SS. I had never seen this skit before but my immediate reaction was "Wow. They even keep DISCO stuff alive. Who else does that?!." Back then you could still find ancient stuff in the rotation going back even further than this. (I had no way of knowing when this was shot, but I intuitively understood that the Elmo character didn't exist yet, .)

This was when Elmo was just a background character.(i miss those days!) Cookie Monster was the same thing in the first episode. At first he just ate the letter of the day and Kermit got mad it him, as Kermit always does.
