  • 50 seconds of silences in original

in rebuild, 13 seconds of silence

  • no kidding she was on "those days"

  • Hello, I have a question about this anime. Is there other seasons or am I mistaken? I think I've heard of Neon Genesis Evangelion and then some other.. But I am not sure if it was Neon genesis but there were mecha

  • @Larreyftw One season: 26 original episodes + 4 director cut episodes + End of Evangelion (2 episodes - real ending to the series) + Rebuild movies: Evangelion 1.0 and 2.0 (cinematic versions) and 1.11 and 2.22 (tuned up versions with new scenes thrown in) - that is all for my knowledge. Evangelion 3.0 (Q) is scheduled to be relased in fall 2012 and the 4.0 in 2013 i think ... I hope the anwser is sufficient :)

  • I remember seeing this scene for the very first time, once the spot at 0:25 came around, I'm just sittin' there waiting for something. Twenty-eight seconds later, I just went, "Dang, this is takin' a while, isn't it???"

Half a second later, that twitch at 0:56 happens, and I just had a O.o face. The timing was hilarious, like I just got a reaction to my question.

  • Bitch needs a hug...and a cock.

  • Asuka on PMS = your worst nightmare

  • Comment removed

  • Blink...blink, damn you, blink!

  • <3 Rei

  • One minute and fourteen seconds later, they're still going up the elevator.

    "I can't remember a time when this wasn't happening..."

  • >watching this video

    >SUPER MEXICAN music on another tab begins playing as soon as door closes

    >i lol my heart out

  • um rei didnt blink the whole video O.O

  • Asuka's disgust when she sees that it's Rei. Damn...

  • What was the point of this scene?

  • she's PMSing

  • @ghostofsparta757 isnt she always. -/_\-

  • EMO -_-

  • As one Joel Robinson said before: "DO SOMETHING! God..."

  • When I first saw this the thought that she was on the rag never even crossed my mind.

  • I keep hearing "if you like anime, then you'll like Evangelion." I already liked the anime, but after watching it from beginning to end, I grew to dislike it more and more as I kept going. Every awkward plot twist, every character losing all development until the last four episodes, every inconsistent explanation for the angels and evas, and god awful thing they call an ending. Every time I try to enjoy it, it gets thrown back in my face why I shouldn't. Not by other people, but the anime itself

  • @DragoRidley17 I like to pretend the last two episodes don't exist.

  • 0:26-1:14 *Turns on the JEOPARDY theme*

  • Well, that must have been easy to animate.

  • This proves Asuka is the bitchy attenion whore we know and love.

  • So.... Why do fans fantasize about sexual relations with 14 years olds in this anime exactly? I never really understood it.

    I mean, they're 14 years old.

  • Man, talk about shitty budget...

  • @n00bofdestiny

You can practically hear Anno rummaging through his office, trying to find spare change to fund the show during this silence. Needless to say, the budget went to hell during the last third of the show.

  • 沈黙、長ー!!

  • FILLERFILLERFILLERFILLERFILLERFILLER

  • Rei, is a doll they do not blink son, have you noticed in the entire anime series??? HOLY COW!!!!!!!!

  • They...don't...BLINK!!! DB

  • @ishockmyself - With the version I have on DVD, which is the platinum director cuts edition. The dialogue of this scene is almost identical to that of the Dub. Maybe a few words are changed, but I think they did a nice job with the Evangelion dub.

  • how odd, in the rebuild series during this scene, Rei blocks the slap....

  • @seangames111 And in Rebuild they're arguing about an entirely different thing.

  • Needs elevator music.

  • Rei is soooo cool.

  • Rei blocks the slap in the movie version XD

  • 2:18

Don't worry, everyone. She's just having her period.

  • The point where Gainax says, "Uh...we're running out of money. I know, let's use one still frame of animation for thirty seconds and call it art!"

    And it is!

  • That was a difficult staring contest I had.

  • haha what a bitch...i know someone like her

  • In the dub, they actually put an instrumental version of "Fly Me to the Moon" in the background of the scene, like elevator music. It adds a bit of ironic humor to the scene.

  • Oh, no, wait, apparently that's just my memory being faulty and that never actually happened.

    Oh well.

  • Apparently this video was linked to on TV Tropes. Thanks, random person getting me lots of views all of a sudden.

  • Jesus. This is the first time I've seen the Jap translation. Why do the Yanks always fuck with the dialogue?

  • @ishockmyself I don't know. Evangelion doesn't have a TERRIBLE dub/translation, but still, people that localize things from other languages often forget to stay true to the source material in the name of accessible localization. Also, keep in mind that even subtitles like this can fail to be completely correct, and subs often fuck with the dialog just as much in order to be readable and understandable.

  • @Voretus keep in mind that the english dub could have been much worse as the english version of evangelion was released in a time when anime dubs weren't very keen on quality like...at all, in fact it was one of the first to have a half-way decent english dud with voice actors that weren't pulled out of community theater and forced to read a poorly translated script with little to no direction

  • @Voretus

not to mention that EVA was one of the first series to get a decent translation in the west. It was also one of, if not THE, first full series released in the west straight to home release instead of being made for a syndication release. While ADV was in contact with the production team in Japan to make the translation as good as possible, there was no real setup to make said conversations easy.

  • @ishockmyself, I think you should calm down.

It's really not a big deal. Sometimes things need to be changed or altered for a number of reasons. The subs aren't always accurate, either. Get over it.

  • At the silent part I thought my computer froze. O_O btw can someone tell me what Evangelion is about? This is my first Evangelion video, so I really dont understand whats going on. Well, I understand the blue-haired girl likes dolls, is that what everyone is saying?

  • @belly8900 Basically as the series progresses it start's to get darker. This scene is towards the last 6 eps if I remember right. Asuka is basically pissed off over the fact that her synch ratio with her EVA is falling.(EVA are mechs not dolls that're used to fight Angels which are the antagonists) I could explain more but I'd spoil it. You should really watch the series it's a great anime if not the best. Also if you feel like you're losing your sanity as the series progresses that's normal XD

  • @Stiglitz51 Thanks for the summary. And i already lost my sanity to half of the animes on my Anime List in my channel description. XD So, this anime, might not, you know, seem like anything to me. XD

  • @belly8900 Ohhhhhh believe me you gonna snap a little bit from this.

  • @Stiglitz51 OH SHIT.

I just spoiled myself. i saw the ending. where the dude, his name is Shinji, right? well, he, you knnoooooow..... O_o well to be honest that part made me laugh. XD

but im still watching Evangelion!!!! AND I WILL GO NOW. O_O

  • @belly8900 Now if you watched the whole series up to there you would be seriously disturbed. =I

  • @belly8900 but if that's the scene where Shinji masturbates over her then that's not the end

End of Evangelion is the movie that finishes the series but that scene if it was that one I just said isn't the ending. It's the beggining of the film.

  • @Stiglitz51 ooooohhh. SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT......

  • @belly8900 This is kind of a weird Eva video to have come across and watched first... well, generally, Evangelion is about a group of kids who pilot giant mecha, and their problems with that and their psychological problems. It gets really weird later on in the series. Most people who watch it end up liking it, if they like anime.

  • @Voretus LOL i see this is a weird scene! i started laughing at the silence! XD and thank for the summary. Many people say this anime is a mindfuck....?

  • @Voretus

though this scene was more, "we are running low on non-fight scene animation budget, how can we save some money?".

  • @belly8900 she says the blue haired girl IS a doll... not likes dolls, and by "is a doll" that means she does only what she is told to do, and doesn't think for herself

  • Admit it. You were waiting for one of them to crack a huge fart.

  • Rei is such a badass.

  • DUN NUH NUH NUH NUH NUH NUH. TEQUILA!

  • Neat thing, in the 2.22 Rebuild:

Rei Stops Asuka's hand from slapping her face.

  • @madchocobo12 um...sometimes?

  • I wonder what did Rei thinks after getting slap by Asuka

  • Greatest series of all time.

  • ELEVATOR MUSIC TIME!

  • wheres the elevator music?!

  • When I just say the beginning, I was like, WTF?!??!

  • You can cut the tension...with a knife.

  • I find it amusing that one of the most atmospheric scenes in the series was just thrown in because they were running short on money.

  • @SergeantLuke Oh yeah, the last two episodes were... oh, you mean THIS scene. Yeah, it's alright :D

  • OMFG ASUKA SNIFFED THAT WAS SO AWESOME

  • *sniff*

  • Can you tell they're running out of money? XD

  • This is really interesting/disturbing when you know Asuka's "circumstances" with dolls in her past.

  • ............0:54 Rei pulls off a silent but deadly. O.O Asuka tries to hold it, lol.

  • YOU CAN'T CUT BACK ON FUNDING! YOU WILL REGRET THIS!

  • in rebuild, rei parries the asuka punch XDDDD, remembers of the past? XDD

  • Although this scene was good demonstrating their rivalry,

but they took too much advantage of it because of budget cuts.

  • when I first saw that silence, I thought that my CD was scratched

  • this is my favourite scene in the whole of evangelion! hilarious

  • What makes me even more angry is that she COULD have acted differently as seen in Rebuild. And I think Asuka has no right to be jealous of Rei if she herself is too pround to admit that she loves Shinji. Even Asuka herself (albeit in Rebuildverse where Shinji being a tiny little bit braver sets of a huge chain reaction) could see how shallow her simple crush was in comparison to Rei's deep LUV.

  • @KendrixTermina Rei doesn't care about Shinji at all, she doesn't care about anything she is a total nihilist

  • @fleamarket3000 HAHAHAHA! Just rewatch the entire anime and then tell me again that Rei doesn't care about Shinji at all! He's the second if not THE most important person in her life! The one who made her smile and cry, the one she is constantly watching from afar. She let him decide the fate of humanity. She even gets angry when Asuka badmoths him in ep. 16. I could somewhat understand if you told me that their bond isn't romantic, but you can't tell me that she doesn't care about him at all.

  • @fleamarket3000 she cares about shinji until she dies the second time and is transfered to a new body. It is really apparent during the semi-final act of the series. shinji is seen talking to her in a couple of scenes.. it's too bad anno never showed their conversations. however as far as sexual tension goes. she apparently had none, as for shinji I really couldn't tell. All I can say is that rei is a hybrid between shinji's mom and eva, which makes her shinji's half sister

  • ASUKA YOU BITCH!

Rei was trying to help you!

  • i hated asuka the first time I watched this series, but after re-watching it again, i feel really bad for her and what happened to her..

  • 0:26~1:14

    LMAO

Actually there is another scene which also freeze like this.

  • This is a masterful scene. The long absence of action or word, the Chinese water torture ticking. Even the way it's been visually drawn generates tension and conveys uneasiness.

Then, the shock: Rei is the one that speaks first.

  • @FateJHedgehog It's more effective when you're not watching it on Youtube--you don't have the movement of the little red bar to distract you from the tension.

  • @FateJHedgehog

I didn't realize 40 + seconds of a still image was so masterful.

  • @FateJHedgehog totally right

  • @FateJHedgehog I can't tell if you're actually being serious or not.

  • @FateJHedgehog

Hahaha yeah I was staring at Asukas mouth all the time waiting for what she will say ^^

  • @FateJHedgehog People always say that Anno just wanted to cut corners during these repetitive scenes. Well I say, never was thrift put to such good use.

  • @FateJHedgehog alternately, they ran out of money and were cutting corners in the animation

  • @FateJHedgehog I never thought of it that way. Perhaps Gainax utilised the fact they were running out of money to good ends.

  • i thought my screen froze when i first saw this. then asuka sniffed.

  • OMG ITS THE FAMOUS ELEVATOR SCENE!!

  • Their relationship is so terrible in the old series. I prefer in Rebuild. Everything doesn't seem so hard to comprehend.

  • wth!! why is this scene different from the movie :eva 2 (you can not advance)

  • @Voretus

Yeah this scene is better in the original version than the movie version.

I was surprised at how easily the girls started to like Shinji in the movie.

I still like the movies though.

  • @Voretus lol@your bad opinion.

  • @JisakuJ at my correct opinion, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a terrorist. >:(

  • @Voretus "Terrorists win!" - Counter-Strike, circa 1999

  • @JisakuJ funny story, I used to play that off and on and people would get mad cause I was really annoying and would make pseudo-chanting yells into the mic after terrorists won. it was pretty great, I'm glad i could tell you the story.

  • @Voretus same. I'm glad we both had this discussion! Take care, friend. *5'd n subscribed*

  • @JisakuJ Aw, thanks man

  • @tatoearashiga Uh, because the movies aren't an excact remake of the Series, but an alternate Version. Rebuild sorta shows a different road the characters could have taken. It's all part of one big work of art. If you have the time, you should watch the original series (tipp: Watch End of Evangelion (ak.a, 'The Movie') right after episode 24 and THEN watch episodes 25 and 26, it's easiert to understand thay way) and THEN rewatch Rebuild. You'll be able to enjoy it much more.

  • @tatoearashiga Oh, and greetings to a new Member of the EVA fan comunity^^

  • They really did run out of ink.

    :/

  • Looks like the animators got lazy for a bit there.

  • How dare you slap her (off-screen)!

  • Wait, when Asuka refers to her as a doll, is that why it always shows the doll in her flashbacks as a child or something?

  • it has to do with her mother. Asuka's mother went crazy and ended up believing a doll she had was Asuka, while she thought Asuka herself was the "doll" simply refereing to her own daughter as, "that girl over there." eventually, the mother hung herself, and the doll as well.

    Asuka HATES dolls.

  • Don't worry Asuka, we hate you too

  • @xxxChainsOfFatexx I love Asuka. The only likable character besides Misato.

  • @Voretus I do feel sorry for Asuka for what happened to her and her mother, but this is no excuse for being such a huge bitch to Rei

  • @xxxChainsOfFatexx

Our mind is inferior to natural laws, so it doesn't care about if there is an excuse or not. So if you try to put yourself in her shoes than you will know, that she is a sick person.

  • I always seem to start laughing during their silence. .-.

  • @Gallantmon1X I laughed when they included part of this in Evanelion 2.22

  • @Gallantmon1X I laugh during -all- of the long silences of Eva. xD It's like.... almost an entire minute of no acting, no animation. Just *staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaareSNIFFstaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre*

Sure, it's truthful about reality... but it's HILARIOUS to just watch them sit there and do nothing. And only Eva has done it.

...Which is why I call long moments of actionless silence, "Evangelion moments".

  • Which episode is this from?

  • Episode 22.
