Polly Harvey Just slays me every time. She squeezes more passion and conviction into 3 minutes than most artists manage in entire careers. The music just throbs out of the speakers. I just watched an interview with her promoting "A Woman a Man Walked By". She talked about how important it was for her not to repeat herself in her music...Who knows what she'll come out with next. I can't wait.

I think she's trying to say she's ashamed of needing someone so much. It's destructive and limiting. She sings "if you tell a lie, I would take the blame" she's pretty much saying she'd do anything for them no matter how bad they were. She can't move forward - the love has such a stranglehold on her. At the end of the song it comes full circle "if you pass me by, it's such a shame". No matter what her better judgement dictates, she just needs to be with that person. That's my interpretation.

This song is about an abusive relationship. And, that is how love can cause so much pain. Someone you love that much, and they only want to hurt you. It doesn't make sense to those who aren't sociopaths. The Love was completely real for the person she (the person she portrays in the song) thought she knew and that's why it's so messed up.
