Pillsbury itself only semi-exists. Now it's part of General Mills, which still manufactures refrigerated and frozen product. J.M. Smucker took over production of Pillsbury-branded flours and mixes. Because General Mills already had Betty Crocker and Gold Medal, and to avoid controlling too much market share, those lines were disposed of.
1984. I graduated from high school that year! Even back then, seeing a half-hour episode of "TPiR" was kind of weird, since we viewers were already accustomed to the hour-long format for almost a decade. Why did CBS stop airing "The Pillsbury Bake-Off" altogether? Was Alex Trebek still its host at the time?
R.I.P. Johnny Olson...1910-1985. I miss you, Sir! You & Rod Roddy were the best announcers on "The Price is Right"! R.I.P., Rod Roddy...1937-2003. I miss you too, Sir!
@TVLubber Hmmm, Pillsbury Bake-Off? I never saw it on saw it on TV. Then again in 1984, I didn't exist, 1988 I don't remember it well, 1992 and 1994 I was in school. I guess the Pillsbury Bake-Off no longer exists.
@AMEwrestling They did this when the Pilsbury Bake-Off was on CBS until the late 90's. From 1997 on, whenever they showed the Bake-Off, they would air a classic TPIR from the '70s
Oh wow...I was sitting here watching the second showcase and thought...why would they use The Tonight Show theme...but it's Henry Mancini's version...and then it clicked.... HEEEEEEERE'S JOHNNY.....OLSEN!!!
According to Golden Road.net, "16 were done to accommodate CBS Magazine during Seasons 4, 5, 6, and 7". So there were half hour specials in the late 70's as well.
Thanks for this, what other half hour shows you have? Is it just from 84 on? Curious how the opening line went incidentally at this time, since it was cut off here.
They aired half hour episodes in 1990, 1992,. and 1994 for sure, no?. In 1996, the Bakeoff was followed by a soap stars interview show. In 1998, 2000, and 2002, a 70s half hour TPIR episode aired. After 2002, the Bakeoff stopped airing on CBS.
Ah, the good ol' days of Cliff Hangers where $20, $30, and $40 didn't always guarantee you a win.

old commercials are cool

The question is what caused CBS to produce half hour specials of TPIR? This is rare.

@AMEwrestling
The Pillsbury Bake-Off. It took up one half of the hour on CBS' TPIR time slot, so they made a few half-hour shows.

Retro commercials FTW! It's good to see the old commercials. This episode aired in February of 1984. I was born in May of 1984.

4:30-4:54 Bob's torture treatment, but at least the contestant won. Only Bob could set up something like that.

Personally, I would like to see the other three half-hour bakeoff specials you have. I just think they're cool and unusual.

I wonder if the contestant coordinators instructed the players to bid a bit quicker for this episode?

I have this, plus the one from '88, '92, and '94. I don't have any 70's half-hour shows, though.

They also did one in '88, and I have the episode to prove such.
