The worst defiecit for humanity is time. If the industrialized world started to take this seriously twenty or thirty years ago, I don't think we would have to worry about mass extinction. We have the technological impetius to conquer or adapt to a fossil fuelless world but we just don't have enough time to create the infrastructure needed before fossil fuels peak. That combined with global warming (again a problem of time) will make the 21st century our finest or worst hour.
