  • absolutely beautiful -- we are blessed to be able to hear this

  • russell is so cute he has an amzaing voice i just love him and hayley is just stunning :D

  • this is breathtaking thank you SO much for sharing it!!!

  • clarification on the no formal training.it was meant to indicate he didn't train at the recognized classical seminaries.thank god he didn't.

  • Russell Watson has never claimed to be an opera singer,he is a tenor plucked from obscurity with no formal classical training.has a great range of voice and sings in so many different styles.the people's tenor because of his humble background and just a hell of a nice grounded guy!continues to have voice coaching and is just fantastic.continued good health Russell

  • Brilliant!!!!

  • great pair of pipes on them both.

  • could anyone can tell me how russell now is?tnx!

  • As pop performers they're fine, but neither is a real opera or classical singer. All opinions are welcome on YouTube.

  • @arpeggio1358 Pop performers?? Are you serious? Never heard pop singers hit notes like that.

  • @luvbite1 They may be able to hit the high notes, but they are not oepra singers. Opera singers sing roles in complete operas in legitimate opera houses, and never use microphones. Watson and Westenra are pop opera or 'popera" performers who sing opera arias. They also use microphones. They do not sing with the technique of opera singers either. Opera and popera are two different genres and shouldn't be confused. Both genres have merit.

  • @luvbite1 (part 2) Other popera singers are Andrea Bocelli, Katherine Jenkins, Sarah Brightman, Sissel, Tarja Turunen, Filippa Giordano, Charlotte Church. Please listen to real opera singers like Ruth Ann Swenson, Barbara Bonney, Renee Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, Elina Garanca, Piotr Beczala, Hermann Prey, Samuel Ramey, or Juan Diego Florez to hear what a real opera singer sounds like. Then compare them to the popera performers. There really is a difference.

  • @luvbite1 - then what pop singers have you heard? Lots of Rock singers have IMPRESSIVE ranges.... especially males.

Likes of Mariah Carey, Whitney and Her the french canadian (known for doing every other song OTT) can hit higher notes .....

MC used to be the record holder

  • @arpeggio1358 - what is a REAL classical singer? There is no such thing.

  • @pixelrow Classical singers are pretty much all opera singers. Opera singers sing roles in complete operas in legitimate opera houses and don't use microphones. They also sing in classical recitals and concerts also sans microphone. Westenra and Watson are pop singers who sing opera arias. There is nothing wrong with this, but opera and pop opera (popera) are two different genres.

  • @arpeggio1358 - neither Watson nor Westerna are pop singers - they are know for singing classical.

    You didn't explain the difference

  • @arpeggio1358 - I can understand the difference between trained and untrained voice.

But the term pop singers for likes of Watson Westerna etc is false and i detect a hint of snobbery.

This idea that pop singing is easy or a lesser art is simply pathetic. Someone like Micheal Jackson or Mariah Carey - are maginificent singer bar genre.

natrual talent is natrual talent. Trained or otherwise. One genre or other.

  • @pixelrow nobody said pop singers were inferior. They have different training than opera singers do. Opera singers are the Olympic athletes of the singing world with their rigorous training. This doesn't mean pop singers are inferior, just different.

  • @arpeggio1358 - its your attitude - its picking up on what you dnt outright say, phrases like this:

Opera singers are the Olympic athletes of the singing world with their rigorous training.

  • @pixelrow They are Olympic athletes of the singing world, but all singers have to work hard. There are more pop singers suffering nervous collapses than opera singers. Singing is a hard business to be in. Yes, I prefer opera singers, but if you look at my channel, you'll see that there's a pretty eclectic representation of singers there...and I don't put singers on my channel if I don't like their work. We all have our preferences, but that doesn't make us snobs.

  • I was there too, lovely evening and this was my favourite song, very special moment...

  • Is that in front of the War Memorial Museum in AKL ? Nice job - I love Russell Watson, thought he did good!

  • Uooow... Incredible *-*

  • Hayley would have only been aged 14 here. Nice duet.

  • At the end she said "Thank you very much" to Russell, after that they together accepted ovation from audience and then Russell sent flower to her, then she accepted it with smile and charming gesture and finally she said ""Thank you very much" again with mic.

  • This rendition in duet is the most wonderful version I have ever heard. especially the high tone near the end by Hayley and then Russell and Hayley together hit the high tone at the end. This duet rendition is quite unique to Hayley's other version in her album and live show.

  • These are two of my favorite singers. I enjoy each of them individually but I enjoy them even more togther. The combination is quite unique and thrilling.

  • Watson's note at 3.02 meltingly perfect!

  • aled jones is better

  • capitalcronos, At what. Neither is very good at Maori pronunciation.

  • she has got the most fabulous voice!

    The 2 together- Wow!

  • Russell is excellent reminds me of another excellent singer Michael Londra

search: Michael Londra Beyond The Star

    if you want to hear....

  • BRILLIANT!!!

  • I love both of them so much!!~ nice :)

  • This Concert was in Auckland, new Zealand in February 2002.

  • Holy crap!! Russell is 40+ but he looks only 26-27 to me!!!!

  • He was 35 when this was recorded. He's not THAT good at being young looking LOL! :)

  • @Clytia

Is he 40??!?! I was just thinking that he had to be something around 25 or so..! :O

    Darn.. -.-

  • @mariannekallekoedd

Someone commented that he was only 35 when he recorded this clip but.....aww....he still looks good. :)

  • @Clytia

In sooome pictures he looks a bit.. unattractive..

Yet in other pictures he looks SO FUCKING GOOD! <3

  • @mariannekallekoedd

    Photoshop effects? LOL~

  • @Clytia

Nah, was more thinking about his hairstyle.. :p Lol XD

  • I thought that was very moving. I remember that Maori love song from years ago. Two lovely voices.

  • dove posso trovare gli spartiti di russell watson sopprattotto someone like you?

  • That was the Classic in the Park iirc. The Auckland War Memorial Museum in the background overlooking Aucklands harbour. Beautiful. Setting and song.

  • so young and talented :D

  • What cracks me up is russle says the words better than some of the natives I know :) and I maori so i can say that haha

  • Hayley and Russell repeated this performance at the opening ceremony of the World Games in Kaoshuing, Taiwan on 16 July 2009. Amazing.

  • i think russel sung his part a little faster than hayley sung hers

  • so he did, the orchestra was rushing after him

  • Oh My God that was amazing, they should release this as a duet! Well Done Hayley and Russell

  • Russell Watson is so handsome :-)

  • Maori - sorry if I'm absolutely wrong, but it is the language they're singing in, isnt it?

  • Yes. It's a traditional Maori love song from about the time of the first World War. Very well know in New Zealand, that's why Watson is getting some appreciative applause at 1:28.

  • Speachless

  • Perfect. Wonderful. Brilliant.

  • Her voice is so astounding

  • AMAZING.

  • oh....my....god, that last note was AMAZING.

  • beautiful =)i never noticed how long her hair was until this video :o

  • That was just excellent

  • bless susan boyle

  • in which language they're singing?

  • Maori.

  • Maori.

  • Maori

  • she's acctually 22

  • hahaha, she is only 14!

gaww, her voice is stunning though

  • they make such a cute couple, they should marry! they REALLY fit each other, in appearance, vocals, work (singers)...

  • John Rowles sings this beautifully, too.

  • omg...such a sweet voice`

  • both of them look GREAT

  • Fino !!

  • anybody know who russell watson is ? i'm sorry i don't know who neither of them is .. .anyone please?

  • Russel has been around awhile. I have his "The Voice" CD and have had it for many years. You have been missing out, check him out singing "Bridge Over Trubles Waters" with Sissel! AWESOME!

  • idk

  • susan boyle even brought me here lol

  • What does Pokare kare Ana means?

  • Hayley is from Christchurch New Zealand and the native language there is Mauri(sp). Pokare Kare Ane is a Mauri love song about someone gone to sea, leaving their loved one behind.

  • I see, thanks for the explanation.

  • *Maori ;) pretty close though!

  • If singing well is a requirement for entry into heaven, alot of people are gunna miss out - big time!!! And there will be some nasty characters there as well. I think I like the way it's already set up - trust God, and we'll all sing beautifully when we get there. :D

  • I wonder if god has a special place in heaven for souls with talent like her.she definately deserves wings.

  • she has a voice like an angel, the first time i watched it i cried,i wish they would have sang it on either of their cds, they both are very talented..

  • the duet? b/c the song is on her cd Pure, from 2003

  • perpetual61. This song is on the DVD of this concert as well as Hayley's performance of I Dreamed A Dream.

  • I know I have the Dvd I only wish they would have done a Duet on either of their Cds.

  • @perpetual61 Yes, they did. On Russell's CD "OUTSIDE IN" (2007) Hayley sings with him 'Time To Say Goodbye'. I'm not sure, but I think that there is a video of this duet, here on Youtube. You'll like it.

  • Russell Watson is really charming..Both of them sang really well!

  • She was amazing and in response to the Bad Sonnie comment below she was 15 at the time.

  • She's the best

  • In their defense, I think Hayley was only 13yrs. old at the time...not bad for kid. Before they sang this song (a part not included in this clip), that he's never sung the song before, and Hayley mentioned that she'd never sung it as a duet. So all things considered, it's a great performance.

  • You miss it all - it was to portray both their voices - and that was the start and end.

But they clicked and the result was great.

Peace for Christmas and may your new year bring half as much as I want from mine.

    Sorry

  • this is absolutely beautiful don't watch the vid just listen to them sing, makes me shiver its so lovely

  • i dont really like his pronocuation of the maroi, but its alright for a forgiener

  • And I don't like you spelling of the "maroi" (ma-rooo-eee) word.

    Haha, it's MAORI not MAroi

  • my bad, i'd take that back, my MAORI isnt that great either

  • It's ok, that was my idea of a joke.

  • love them both, seen hayley live, great

  • The video has elongated the two it looks like an El Greco painting.

  • sensational

  • amazing, just amazing.. love this clip..

  • Such a beautiful voice!! And she's so young here!

  • omfg! she is SOOOO skinny

    & her voice is angelic

  • i have never been one to gripe as i sit at my keyboard and type but Hayley wasnt tall, and her frame was so small her pajamas had only one stripe! Then Pavarotti said with alarm You could have plenty of charm But you really should try To eat some more pie I could fit one of you in each arm! --anon-- She certainly has filled out well.....
  • lol wow nice reply...

    i think...

    lol he he

  • She isn't actually that skinny. They've obviously stretched the screen.

  • Yes, the aspect ratio has gone off for some reason - however, she was pretty darned thin when she first came on the scene. I heard she almost fell through a hole in her pocket once

  • WOW!!! Perfect.

  • It's wierd, I always walked past russel watsons house wen i was younger, he only live like 100metres away, i can look out of my window and see his old house, and my older bro used to wash his car, and my uncle used to go skool wit him, and i used to always see his dad. And yet i only found out he was a singer wen he left that hous lol, it is mad seein him on tv,wen he lived so close lol, he is a mad singer, and hayley has a gorgeous voice, they both sing well together. i'll shut up now

  • hayley has really long hair!!

  • The wonderful Hayley and.. Russel who ??

  • English bloke... Fantastic singer... He has done really well to survive two brain tumours in the recent past. Russell Watson is the name. Respect to real hero... Get well soon!

  • It wasn't mean, I never heard about him before. Wish him well..

  • I really like those voices. Hope they sing together again

  • Hes One of the best and she is drop dead beutiful

  • i love him

  • i love him

  • OMG I'm a little late on this but i just read that Russell is 41years old! He looks like he is like 24-27 yrs old in the vid for crying out loud. Im also saddened and keeping him in prayer during this time of healing and therapy with his 2nd brain tumor surgery.

    M.

  • that sucks about the tumor. Hold up, he's in his forties and he looks like that? WTF!?

  • hahaha thats what i was thinking. I think he is a good singer, i thought that the "crehendo" at the end of each passage was a bit much. Hayley.....flawless.

  • Hayley is awsome. His heavy vreathing at the end of the high vocals is rather irritating though.

  • Awesome performance!

  • What I'd do to meet her...

  • Still in love with him!

  • Wow, I'll never tire of this song, nor of it sung in a duet like this - beautiful!

  • Bravo !!!! Excelente !!!!

  • Two of my fav` classical singers on one stage! Magic

  • One word, angelic!

  • If this is what I think it is, it was years ago. I was there - free concert in the Auckland Domain (largest city in New Zealand) with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, Russell and Hayley.

Hayley was largely unknown outside of NZ - that long ago!

Russell was on the way up on his career. He was, as I recall, the main drawcard with Hayley brought in to get locals along. Was performed in NZ - Russell says, 'how lucky you are (to the audience) to produce a voice like that'.

  • "Hayley brought in to get locals along"? Who the hell was Russell supposed to appeal to? Aliens? Just kidding. But if the locals wouldn't go without Hayley there, who would? People from overseas?

It was in February 2002 when Hayley was 14. The big star is usually supported by a small fry whose career is hoped to get a kick-start from it. Liz Marvelly will be supporting Paul Potts on his tour of NZ.

  • Sqid101

By the time this duet was done, Hayley had already recorded two albums, which reached no 1 and no 4 respectively on the New Zealand pop charts.

I think that both points of view are correct for different reasons. Internationally, Hayley was indeed a "small fry" on the way up - within New Zealand itself however, she was probably the bigger of the two stars.

  • absolutely beautiful...God bless

  • My great grandfather Paraire Tomoana wrote this song for his wife Kuini:):)

And yes I can prove it the record use to live at my grandfathers house until I knocked off the mantle and the glass smashed lol:):):) Now it is at my great uncles house

  • give russell a break he's been in hospital under going brain tuma removal, no wonder he can't quite boom out his voice like he used to.

  • Abinator

Can you prove it? It's a very beautiful song. Russell is very poorly and we want him to recover. Very quickly! We pray for him.

  • My great grandfather.. Paraire Tomoana, wrote this song

  • Why I think so too.

  • Siliven, behave yourself this minute! You know perfectly well that it is not appropriate for a married man in his 40s to date 14-year-olds.

  • No, I know. I thought he was around her age. Than I looked him up only to learn that he was actually born in 1966. I was like "Whoa! Never mind..."

  • Actually, of course, he's about 41 now and she is 20. But he's married and it seems to be quite happily so. If he was a bit younger and unmarried then it may not be a bad idea.

  • No, he's divorced 9 years ago. He's single now.

  • I am a fan of both Russell and Haley. But I watched this performance instead of just listening to it and it seemed to me that he was helping her the entire time. I mean throughout the entire thing. He helped her.

  • What a weird thing to say. He was a bloody nuisance and just wasn't on top of the song. She has been singing it in her sleep since she was about 2. What was the nature of this "help" he gave her -- did he whisper the words to her? Or what? She had sung this solo more times than you have had hot dinners long before she dueted it with Russell. Who do you think taught it to Russell?

  • Look, I like Russell, he's a character, and I'm not saying that Hayley would never need help. But the last song on earth she'd need help with is Pokarekare Ana. By the time they are about 13 all Kiwis have sung that song a zillion times.

At first Russell stands there stiff like a dummy and smiles and nods when she smiles at him. I don't see how he is being a help.

  • I agree with you Sqid101, I don't see any help coming from Russell and Hayley certainly didn't need any help.

  • I'm sort of sorry I said he stands there like a dummy. He nods and smiles at one stage in approval, and they exchange smiles/grins on occasions. There stagecraft is that of an x-pub/club singer and an x-street busker; they work it out as they go along, but this just makes it more charming.

  • Well, maybe he was helping her, by comforting her with his smiled...?

  • He is expressing his appreciation. And trying to be charming and encourging I suppose. He said just before they sang this that he hadn't sung it before. It's on Youtube.

  • By this time Hayley was by no means a rookie....she had toured New Zealand rather intensively in 2001 as a headliner.

  • That was actually. Amazing. Her voice is otally totally flawless. Russels stage manners are appaulingly hilarious!

  • Too Meke! The next Dame Kiri perhapes. No pressure.

  • she has got such a pure voice. Russell is definitely the VOICE. Both r brilliant singers and sing well together. Lovely music

  • Hayley Westenra and Russell Watson - what a dynamic duet of Pokarekare Ana. Truly beautiful.

  • I love Hayley Westenra..!!

    Hayley forever!

  • Amazing, i love them both

  • They are a match made in heaven Two beautiful voices and a beautiful song. The gates to heaven will open for them. Loved it simply loved it. Thanks

  • i feel so much warmth for my homeland.....a warmth that was always there,,but a songs such as this...brings so much emotion......a beautiful duet...

  • two greats singing great

  • Thanks for uploading this fantastic video. They both have beautiful vioces, and I wish them the best in the furture.

  • Hayley Westenra delivers the song with such ease and beauty while you can hear Russell tries to catches some breath and moving microphone away. Russell is terrific but Hayley's performance is beyond this world. You can tell too that Russell is just as enchanted by her voice as the fans.

  • I love her hair, it's so long and beautiful. Cool, he's so nice to her.

  • She has this song as a bonus track on her CD Pure. Just beautiful

  • Fantastic!

  • Lovely, simply splendid! Thank you for posting.

  • OMG!

  • its cute to see how russell is trying to hold her hand and hug her but hayley doesn't get the point.

  • superb - both of them!

  • great vidio

  • ive been a Maro Lanza Fan for twenty eight years and i think Russels voice is just amazing, didnt think i would be saying that

  • Hayley Westenra is outstanding. Her voice sends shivers up the spine and tears to the eyes. What an outstanding talent.

  • Superb performance from Russell Watson!!! love it...

  • Very nice, thank you for providing this.

  • A joy.
