When I try to import an .avi video file into X1 I get an error message saying that .avi is not supported. How does one import video files into a project? Thanks.
This all looks too damn complicated to me. All those buses, menus, assignments just reminds me I m a musician not an engineer and I might be best leaving all this stuff to the experts otherwise I ll be spending more time messing up on these DAWS than I spent actually learning to be a creative musician. And then at the end of it all it sounds totally synthetic and computerised. My favourite recordings are still 70s stuff like steeleye Dan and Elton John done on old gear. Exc tutorial tho !
When watching your tutorial, I stopped at 2.00 after the first music-bit and I am thinking, you play guitar in one style of music and sing in another IMO. Both are good but belong in separate styles. I'm I wrong in thinking so?
@MrNocaster1 lol keep at it, im just working on a new tutorial that explains bus's and routing. If you have any trouble with a specific part of sonar, please let me know. Cheers
is it possible to listen to a song, play a long with it, record the drums at the same time and at the same time while i am drumming hearing myself drum while listening to the song?
@MCIHomeStudio i got the alesis dm10 studio kit, so all i have to do is plug it in my PC with a usb cable right? I already tried that out, but then it records in midi and i still dont hear myself playing
@MikeJunior94 Yes that's correct, plug in your drum kit then start Sonar, make sure that Sonar has recognised your new input in the preferences. You may also need to start Session Drummer and load a sound bank, then select your new kit as the input on the session drummer track. :)
@toftisnice I am afraid I have not had any experience with the Studio version to really make an honest opinion. But I will look into the differences for you if you wish, or you could visit the official CakeWalk site where you will have all the info necessary to answer your question, cheers :)
@toftisnice The Studio edition has Session Drummer 2. It looks and works very differently. But for most applications I would imagine you'll get comparable results. This tutorial is showing Session Drummer 3 (within Producer edition). I've just downloaded the Trial version (Producer) and it does not include ANY Session Drummer (unless I'm missing something). Pretty bad trial, if you ask me.
@1wayne12345 Hi there, im sorry you found it hard to follow along. This was not really meant to be a 'follow along' tutorial as such, as im using recordings I did myself. Im afraid it needs a bit of intuition on your part. The idea was to look at what I was using on a basic four track recording, and use these techniques in your own work. And yes you can put effects on in real time, I have done so in other tutorials that I have made. Thank you
@MCIHomeStudio Hey, thanks for responding. I've been having issues with Sonar 6 (desktop) and my presonus firestudio interface, and I was considering trying a different DAW all together. But I just got a Tascam US-1800 that seems to work well with my laptop (running Sonar 3) and if I can license X1 producer on both computers for the price of one upgrade I will do it.
Thanks for the tutorials. I've been checking out the others as well.
@1wayne12345 In their terms and conditions, Cakewalk allow you to install Sonar on your PC and Laptop, they say that they expect most people to have both so this is no problem. Installing it on more than this may require you to get in touch with them. Cheers
@MCIHomeStudio Sorry for being critical before. I realize now this is not a sales demo. It's a tutorial for people who already have the program and can try the examples here on their own equipment.
I would like to have heard the "bass" guitar track prior to transposing, after transposing, and then after adding the effect. Cool idea. Recently I've been use the octivator feature on my POD HD500 and looping while jamming with my drummer
right im going from amp to computer with a line in cord
i also click the first arm that says guitar then clicked the big recording button and no sound came out from it nothing happened also i cant hear the drums metal sounds
@EpiphoneLPJrGuitar Hi there, there are a lot of questions there lol and not something that i could answer within the character limit available here. I suggest that you either email me directly at mcistudio@hotmail.co.uk or visit the official website, sign up and post your problem on our forum. w w w . m c i s t u d i o . c o . u k I look forward to hearing from you :)
@26hknelson The mic is an ART-MTWO condenser mic, retail around £160 (British pounds). It is considered one of the cheaper condensers, but I have used it on all my recordings and swear by it! :)
@ZVITAGA If you mean adding effect (reverb/delay) prior to entering sonar i.e. through a mixer or effects rack then no, I am currently DAW reliant, meaning I get my effects purely from VST and internal plug-in effects. If however by 'post' you mean adding them to the Main Buss then yes I do. But that is really only for effects that I want to effect all my other tracks with, so I would save that for mastering effects, such as VC64 plug-in. I like to add my reverb/delay to each track seperately :)
@thekravchuk I havent had much use in X-cita plug-ins unfortunately. But you are right, sometimes EQ is not the best course to take, and may require another, alternative method to get the colour you need from your signal.
I would love to see a video on Audio Snap and beat making, how to slice, dice, time-stretch, and using the Matrix - a kind of "How To Use X1 Like Ableton Live" video. That would be ace. Thanks! Great videos BTW, really enjoying them. :)
@BeatSneaker Hi there, I will start work on one as soon as ive uploaded pt 3. The Audio snap finction is one of my favourite functions, so i will to a tut on it soon. :)
Hi there, cheers for the kind words. Guitar rig 4 should have come with your copy of sonar as an LE version unless you are using an older version of sonar. In which case it is already set up to work within Sonar's X1 DAW. If not, guitar rig is a VST Plugin which stands for 'Virtual Studio Technology' and essentially allows an external interface to work inside of a recording software. In short to use guitar rig within sonar find the VST file inside the guitar rig install folder....
@MCIHomeStudio ....and move or copy that file to the VST folder inside your chosen recording software. then open your program, if sonar, go to 'Utilities' then go to 'Cakewalk Plugin Manager' then in the box click 'Scan VST Plug-ins'. the program will then scan the folder you put the guitar rig VST file in and add it to the VST list in sonar. All you have to do then is shut it down, reopen and head to your effects and VST drop down list and select guitar rig 4. Hope this helps! :)
awesome tut man. how did you hook ur guitar up to ur pc for use with sonar and guitar rig? i use a simple usb interface. guitar rig works fine in standalone but within sonar i cant seem to get them to work together. how have you setup ur audio devices and how have you routed them via the track and bus settings? i read that it could have something to do with asio drivers. im using behringer usb low latency drivers for my guitar rig. keep up the good work mate best tut on 4 sonar on youtube so far

@MCIHomeStudio thanks for the quick reply. i feel like an idiot now. yes ur rite it did come bundled with sonar x1 producer but i was running guitar rig as standalone rather than a vst. after scanning the vst folders i found it as u stated. its working perfectly now and i have started laying down tracks following ur tut. plz keep the tuts coming. im looking forward to parts 3 and 4

You perform far too many tasks without playing a sample for us to understand how the changes effect the song.
And how are we to have any idea what drum file to use?
Once again is it possible to do the edits in real time to hear how they are effecting the mix?
