Robert Smith is not only a brilliant musician, and good guy, he is also very intelligent. Yes that was a very profound statement but Robert would never ask anyone not to believe in him just as much as he woulkdnt ask anyone to believe in him.
Robert is a true genius. A profoundly talented musician who has made some of the world's finest tracks and albums. He displays a refreshingly humble attitude...one of the traits of a man who deserves this title. His place in musical greatness is assured. Long Live Mr Smith! :)
@mineincisi i dont think that he was really sying that religion should stop for a year i think that he was saying that peoples lifes would be miserable without god he acctually said "lets see how the world turns"
@cmclsrnsee Pretty sure he meant it in a sense of seeing what people would actually do for themselves if they didn't follow something blindly for a year. Nice try, though.
@Nethageraba41 yes that is what he meant, after i wrote that (some months ago) i discovered that robert isnt religious but i dont really care too much about that, i still think that he is awesome and he has the right to believe (or not) in whatever the hell he wants.
Also, religions or relationships may seem negative because of the government but if you seek the "truth" of the one thing you choose to be a part of it doesn't have to do with the bloody freakin governments whatsoever! Many religions and relationships are positive and loving it makes me sarrowful that people don't seek that because of the bad examples.
Love you Robert!! And the Cure! You guys totally deserved the award!! But the religion mark made me a bit ticked but its all good Robert still rocks. I was reading some of the comments and arguments and have noticed some christians got offended like moi. My response is that all of those who don't know is that Christianity is NOT a religion, it is a RELATIONSHIP with God and his son Christ! It is not negative! It is a love affair!
when u see the most simple butterflie around you, a beautiful smile of children or just a sunrise..then u believe in god.i dont know, sometimes just felt it.
Robert Smith is so cute and I love his music so much it has touched me in my most meaningful moments...do what you want with religion but I know God believes in you Robert
I'd also, for different reasons, be interested to see what would become of this world if there existed a ban on belief in God. Though, I could safely say it would be a sight worse than it is now. If you think a society is bad with God, without God would be utter chaos.
The Cure are my all-time favorite band. I do believe in God and it doesn't clash with my musical tastes. I don't see myself(or humanity) as a be all/end all. We do not have all the answers, nor will we ever. There is something bigger and better than us.
Well said, I completely agree with you. Unfortunatley the rest of the world is just going to crumble in reiligous war, making life's meaning even more difficult to discover.
ya, I think there is a saying in Proverbs or Ecclesiastes (not 100 percent its in the Bible) where the author writes that the more you know about the world, the more sorrow you will experience.
LOL. I choose to not pay attention to all the corruption, although I know it is there. Instead, I choose joy and good company!
I was disappointed in his "ban religion for a year" comment. For someone as educated and well read as he is, he has to be aware how wrong it would be to FORCE anything on people; to take away agency. People ought to be free to believe or not believe in God or anything else they wish. To even WANT to take away choice...I was floored. This is the first comment I have ever heard from his gorgeous/adorable mouth that I didnt agree with. As much as I love Robert, I was disappointed with this.
He was asked a question. He answered it honestly. I'm sure you yourself have said far worse things, he was just wondering what it would be like. He could have said ban religion altegether but opted for a year only. Too much political correctness in this comment blah
I think you possibly missed the subtle humour in his remark. He was asked what would he do if was given the power of God. He remarked that he would ban religion and make everyone stop believing in God for just a year. To me, that is a profound statement in a very bizarre way. In other words, it is like saying don't believe in him if he has been given the power of God.
You should not take Robert's remarks literally. Just think about it for some time and under which context he is speaking.
or u probably missed the not-so-subtle statement. takes time to face it though, eh? unless u r an unchallenged expert on Robert Smith...maybe he should consult u:D:D
Possibly. It is just my interpretation at the end of the day. You need not accept it. I do not claim to be an expert on Robert Smith but I love The Cure. I respect Robert as both a musician and as a person.
@ajittffcure I think the context is obvious given the problems in middleast but if by religion he meeans stuff like Buddhism i disagree, though Im assuming he doesnt.
@ajittffcure I would say... with the intelligence that my humble mind sees in him, that he meant maybe it would bring about peace in a way.... at least for the fanatics. There are fanatics in every religion, not just the Muslim religion, and if the religions could stop trying to prove that they are the only way of thinking, there would be less war......... Religion has been the reason for so many wars and problems. I believe in God, but I don't say I'm right and everyone else is wrong.
Make it happen, band religion for one year. I believe religion kills democracy because it is dictating your life. For one fucking year lets get real and be free.
THE CURE ROCKS!! and he had the best godlike power!! BAN RELIGION for a YEAR!!! once it hit that part i was like "fuck yea robert!!" one year of no one hating eachother for religious differences, that's be a little less hate for a year, more smiles for everyone!!! 5/5 great vid!
Robert Smith, mi luz!! GRANDE, VIRTUOSO... No podría sólo pagarte con mi vida, por tenerte cerca haría cualquier cosa, sólo para decirte cuanto te amo y cuanto te admiro, mi gran ídolo! Felicitaciones, TE AMO!
Well, bands like Oasis and Blur are so embedded in the psyche of the British people that they will always be remembered even if their music can be mediocre at times. They are what I'd say typical British bands for the pub going public dosed on beer and whisky. Whereas, bands like The Cure (though British) have a more universal appeal.
The Cure received such an award after making interesting and diverse music for 33 years. On the other hand, at one point, bands such as Oasis and Blur were considered the greatest bands on the planet merely after making music for 2 years. Its a farce!
Robert's remarks from 0:23-1:00 sums up the lack of substance of this whole media gimmickry.
lol the strokes will evenually get it but they only released 3 albums in a career of 10 years you have to be in the business for at least 20 years to get a shot
I disagree. I don't think he's evil. He's been hurt by religion and ravening wolves in sheep's clothing ("I look at your face, and feel my heart pushed in...I cannot hold what you devour the sacrifice of penance in the holy hour") where in the Bible does it say that penance is something we have to do? I don't find it anywhere.
and the lie that people have to work their way into heaven (keeping it clean, taking one for the team).

I have to say this in response to something you said earlier--you *can* be the best thing! because *no one* sounds like *you!* : ) You have that special cure sound...had it before anybody else...everybody else taht sounds like you is merely a copy. No one plays minor chords like you!!!
(forgot to mention that in my somewhat kneejerk reaction to the God stuff..which is also true too, but : )
organized religion as a whole does tend to be screwed up but we can't judge God by what his quote unquote people do...if you looked at the old testement, you'd see the Israelites and kings after God's own heart making huge blunders...please don't lump God in with fallen humans, Robert. It's not fair. Free will and all that.
The very act of believing in a God is dangerous, because it snuffs a desire for material evidence and critical thought. It's okay to put the "God" idea on the shelf, but we haven't developed a method for proving its existence either way. In other words, I doubt that Robert Smith cares if God is or isn't good.
Only give a look at a working watch! Someone clearly put thought into and designed it! The intricasies of earth, including the marvelous human body.. a spider.. a bird couldn't have just begun out of nothing. There was thought put into it, and it had a designer.
For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
First off, let me just say that I can't prove whether a spiritual belief is right or wrong. That isn't really my point. While I think it would be impossible to (ethically) create a society without religion, that doesn't stop me from creating that scenario in the safety of my imagination. Religion is more than likely responsible for a lot of the sorrow and alienation many people experience, so I think it's fair to consider that a world without god(s) might be a better one.
Ok, you could say that she was only one person who seemed to "get it", and compare her to thousands who don't, consider Ma Teresa. Are you saying her religion caused sorrow and alienation? (Sister was truly radical).
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
Romans 1:29

James 1:27
(haha James is Robert's middle name! : ))

"Celebrate in a professional manner", eh? :-)) That alone made this interview worthwhile, though the religion bit was a close second!
