  • Love it!! that was funny!!

  • Can't hear it....:(

  • "VP Wine" refers to VP Sherry, a British wine (and not a "true" Sherry for you wine enthusiasts out there). The "VP" is an abbreviation for the company that produced the wine, Vine Products, based in Kingston upon Thames.

  • Brilliant....even though it isn't politically correct.........

  • and independence is getting closer. A poll on facebook for scots has 8045 people voting for independence and 7605 voting against with just 826 undecided and 1414 for yes but only devolution max.

  • this is kinda racist....

  • @ihateFFX it was the 70s what you going to do?

  • 38 people are deprest

  • I never understood the 'architects wi paying hobbies' line. The only hobby architects in scotland have is queueing at the jobcentre

  • If the shoe fits, wear it!

    LOL

  • @Iain40 VP is a fortified wine ~ the prelude for buckfast :)

  • quite simply....Wow

  • The tourists come here every year

To see all oor historic gear

But all they see is loads o' navvies

High rise flats wi' concrete lavvies

  • Hey Ian, what's a Saturday sannie?

  • Just love this stanza:

"Used to say in faither's day, You could hear the bagpipes play, But now you hear the regal tones o' Elton John and The Rolling Stones. Land that is full o' stinkers, Wee fat Jews and VP drinkers. Whisky put a lot o' stinkers, into Scottish graves."

VP drinkers I think means "Vintage Port Drinkers" This is so true, this stanza.

  • thumbs up for Scottish independence!

  • What album is this on?

  • does anyone know where i can get this as an mp3?

  • Hey Iain, always coming backto listen to the Gentlemen, they are amazing

  • how he can keep his face straight cracks me up!!!!

  • @Obelisk1990 Yes, we wear our "bag pipes", have a good blow lassie, he he!

  • Lovely accent.

  • beat that ya counts

  • ANYONE BUT MURRAY

  • scotland's voices have finally been heard. A majority SNP landslide in a voting system that was designed so as there could never be a majority party controlling scottish affairs. how far have we come since devolution ? how much further could we now go on and achieve ? . i know independence has a mixed reaction but Scotland still has so much more to offer the world .

  • @paulinesmith44 its mair important to think aboot how much scotland as an independent country will benefit scotland itself and the scottish people, the filthy angalo structure british gov is nothing but theft and they will fall as scots flourish cant wait ALBA GU BRATH

  • Watching my uncle Ronnie try not to laugh is the funniest part of this lol

  • "Aye, if the shoe fits...wear it!"

  • Hi Iain

Back for another listen, Love it , cheeky, irrevernt, just like Southern Kiwi sense of humour, but then my island was settled by the Scot

  • never mind the day is near when independence will be here - LOVE IT!!!

  • 3:09 So true

  • They have independance to look forward to in the next 5 years-33 people are against this

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • Love it! Especially the really patriotic bit at the end!

  • @ChrisPipeBand Interesting that their shirts are the same colour as the SNP!

  • We need someone to take the torch from the corries. Nobody does this kind of thing anymore and god only knows why because it's brilliant. Now, to translate into my native tounge - sumbdy needs t tak oer fae the corries. Naebdy dis this ony mare n fuk nose why cos it's fukin magic.

  • @DY06GWD In the 60's-70's the corries used to play alot in my home town in England,we loved them,so dont tar us all with the same brush,i love Scotland,my Scotish mate said i am the only English scot he knows, since seeing the Corries i took up playing scotish folk music, long live the corries

  • @DY06GWD The Macalmans have been doing it for the past few decades. Just thrown in the towel now. It is just that no-one gets the air time that the like of the Corries got in the 70s!

  • I had written to an address I found on a record jacket, asking where they were playing in autumn '89. Ronnie wrote me back himself, with a list of venues, and I met them after their concert in Portree when they came out to sign autographs. When I asked Ronnie if I could get a picture with them, he called to Roy, "Hey! One of the Colonials wants a photo here!" and I still treasure it. How could anyone 'dislike'?! RIP Roy.

  • Priceless!

  • Why cant other races learn to laugh at themselves like we do? This is brilliant!

  • @daviemaxwell well said m8 roy and ronnie do know how too have a laugh i fkn love the corries great scottish singers

  • that is really hilarious :)

  • Some of the meanings only a Scot could know were explained to me by my Scottish husband - love the song and the humour. But I can`t remember my Dearest ever complaining about "frozen twosome"s when wearing a kilt. LOL ......

  • Now that is funny stuff!

We musn't lose 'em! Words to live by, for sure.

  • Love it!

  • What are they talking about at the councilor thing? xD

  • there are 28 freaks or English people

  • @kirkyz2010 They are very welcome (in spite of everything)

  • @Iain40 naw there no :)

  • @Iain40 Thank u

  • @kirkyz2010 Agreed, how could anyone not like this?????? FREEDOM!

  • @kirkyz2010 Och aye laddie... and is there a difference between the two?

  • @kirkyz2010 freaks, im English and I love this

  • @kirkyz2010 I'm "English people", and I absolutely love the Corries, it's a shame England has nothing to compare. The Corries were simply wonderful. Even if their message often attacks my country, it's beautiful to listen to and they probably had a point!

  • AWESOME!!! :)

  • My comment was lost

  • Sorry I meant runrig

  • Is this on any of their albums. I can't see to find it. Also in rungs latest great songs album it seems to ignore Donnie completely.

  • absolutly beautiful music greatest scottish song in my memory RIP roy

  • can anyone post the words of this song, I can´t understand the every word

  • Bloody brilliant. Such clever lyrics and good musicianship.

I'm sort of torn when it comes to Scottish independence - I'm English, but love Scotland to bits; would love to see you guys get independence (I don't think we've done well for you at all), but at the same time want to still be able to keep visiting without problems.

  • @EvenflowBlack

I don't see why Britain has to be one country, but I don't see why we have to split entirely either. Surely it would be possible for us to become something similar to the EU (or perhaps closer)? An international union doesn't always mean the amalgamation of several countries into one.

In the end up, I'd just like to be able to call myself Scottish and have it mean something. I don't feel the need to tear myself away from the other constituent nations on the grounds of prejudice.

  • @MarvellousMuffin the world is moving towards unity...so there is no true independece.....its doesnt matter if every village on this island was its own country there will always be a british isles ....so dont fret laddie

  • So funny

  • Im just an American guy, but I really like this song!!!

  • great song from way back, couldnt re-word a song these days like that! They made simple and funny seem so effortless. Another scottish talent unknown to the hordes outwith our country.

  • This IS a political song though. If you had known Roy then you would know his strong belief in Scotland's Independence!

  • just great! ...said by an italian!

  • i love how at 1:15 roy looks at ronnie, both legends, R.I.P Roy

  • who says us scots can nae hae a laugh at oorselves

  • Land o' the Kilt and Sporran -

    Underneath, there's nothin' worn!

How I wish the wind was warm! Scotland the Brave.

I must admit it's pretty gruesome,

Walking about wi' your frozen twosome!

It's all we've got - we musn't lose 'em - Scotland the Brave.

    Best paragraph ever.

  • @Obelisk1990 my dad plays the side drum and being canadian he wears stuff undeneath his kilt

  • @Obelisk1990 thats going on my tomb stone !

  • @Obelisk1990 Is anything worn under a kilt?

No, it's all in good working order!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Yes, we wear our bagpipes, give 'em a good blow lassie, he he! But no, nothing, why should we? Ahhh the freedom!

  • @Pandaemonium1969 Well, I suppose you wear the 'bare essentials' at least!

  • @Obelisk1990 sut it ya english basterd

  • yes great song great band and surely we can still sing along signing WE WANT A GREAT SCOTLAND INDEPENDANT FROM ENGLAND it is a free country after all isn't it??????????

  • Never a truer word hes been said.

  • love this version, especially from 3:09 when they sing together... and I'm not even from Scotland! :D

  • There are true artists.

  • I met the Corries after a concert in Inverness years ago.Ronnie came across as a bit pernickety but Roy was a lovely gentleman.Whatever their differences were, there has not been another such phenomenon in Scotland as far as wit, humour and perfectly-timed music are concerned, for many years. How lucky were we who were there when it was happening! Get in there you Youngies! It's all been left for YOU!

  • @jockhamish

I am an American fellow who stumbled upon the the Corries by accident. In two days I completely memorized the words to Loch Lomond. I think I will learn this song next!

  • one word.......INDEPENDANCE ! fuck the union we dont need it !

  • @1:27 he cracked himself up

  • @Gecko7291971 Love this song

  • @Gecko7291971 Love this song especially the idea of selling grannies lol

  • They help make Scotland the re-emerging nation it will be

  • absolutley great scottish singers i was brought up with them ma father had all there stuff

  • i love them so much!

  • i love the corries!!

  • Are they the Scottish version of the Smothers Brothers or what??

  • @Dusty754 no not even close, most of their stuff is traditional folk but they throw in the occasional comedy song (the tortoise song was the best one IMO)

  • Not all English would know some of the words used here. Fortunately I lived in Scotland for several years so was able to understand what was being sung and catch the humour of the lines. Such as 'part time jobbies'

Of course its a take off of the English. If you are English and you can't laugh at this then shame on you.

  • is that the Caird Hall in Dundee? This is just pure class!! love it!

  • Simply brilliant! :)

  • the best advert for celt humour

  • Independence will definitely be here

  • Independence will definitely be here !!!!!

  • Ha! 'Wee Fat Jews'. Ha HA!

  • If you are interested in Scotland's future visit "Newsnet Scotland"

  • Classic Entertainers, worth their weight in gold. Fantastic and funny.. but I cannot help but wonder in todays so PC world, would they have ended up doin Jailhouse Rock, with the words they sing here? Uhhh! lol

Thank you for this post.. Sadly I never came across them in life, what have I missed..

  • 3:13 :D !!

  • realy good , love it!

  • was this made to promote their own song in the running for the Scottish National Anthem (Flower of Scotland)?

    Jw

  • Very good!

  • i love the corries for their wonderful singing of both funny and tear bringing sad songs, i agree, lets just listen to their music and appreciate one of the greatest duets Scotland has ever known. Bless Roy's heart R.I.P xoxoxox

  • aww man i love these two...reminds me of ma childhood and my dad. lol.

  • I never realised how many funny songs The Corries wrote! This one is Hilarious, love it

  • @devgal42

The Corries added their own words, but I'm quite sure it originally was written by Bill Hill.

  • @thetrollfairy The words were written in 1950 by the journalist Cliff Hanley for Robert Willson

  • @Iain40 this is the corries humerous version. There are 3 versions normally to scotland the brave not including this

  • Its very dated now but when I wrote it It reflected contemporary issues in Scotland in the mid 70s. We had 11 SNP MPs, were in the World Cup Finals and had been promised devolution ( a promise that wasn't honoured for over 30 years). Mostly though, it was meant to be a bit of self-deprecating fun. The Corries were also of that era, so its wrong to judge history by today's criteria

  • i bit offensive bit still quite funny

  • I'd only let a Scot say something like that.

...Provided he ended it with something like they just did. :D

  • roy had truly magical fingers

  • BRILLIANT

  • BRILLIANT

  • Aww there's few people i'd let get away with that... it's sorta true XD

  • Am I the only one that notices 'wee fat Jews'. lol

  • @scotlandsarmy well if they cared they'd have said something by now:L

  • lan of the purple heather ln o my heart foverver...scotland the brave

  • :snicker: Thanks.

  • Alba gu bràth !!

  • is that the military tattoo festival on the Edinburgh Castle???? looks like that

  • ronnie and roy nothin bit legends

  • OMFG I wish I had all the words to this version, it's funny as hell lol

  • @amethyst48 You could ask Gavin Browne at The Corries Website

  • @happinesscounts I have all the words for this clip but its too big to post here, if anyone wants them I will post them through YouTube

  • @Iain40 quick question does the last verse refer to the first referendum for Scottish independence in the mid 1970s

  • @Welshman2008 That referendum was NOT for Independence, it was a devolution referendum and it was rigged.

Anyone who did not vote was considered to have voted no.

  • @Iain40 Hi, is there any chance you could let me have the words to Scotland the brave please as I have fallen for this version. Thanks, Sj

  • @Iain40 me plz

  • takes me weeeeell 2 child

  • brilliant...love it

  • I would have been so happy to share this video on facebook, but I just coul'd not make it! That's a great funny moment anyway!

    thanks

  • I don't understand all the references, but watching them having so much fun performing this, you can't help but laugh and have fun too.

  • Can anyone tell me what they say after Land of the arctic lorries, Andy Stewart and rock quarries?

    And who is Andy Stewart?

  • Land o' the artic' lorries,

    Andy Stewart and ra Corries,

Land where everybody borries, Scotland the Brave.

  • Andy Stewart and ra Corries. Andy Stewart was a very popular Scottish entertainer.

  • @jockellis he was a Scots singer from the time this was recorded, and he was bloody awful, good voice, terrible songs.

  • I once heard a version that had these verses in it:

Land where we don't like swankies,

Land where we don't use hankies,

Where the lassies love the Yankees,

    Scotland the Brave.

Land that is full of strangers,

Land where we know no dangers,

Home of the Celts and Rangers,

    Scotland the Brave.

Anyone know where I can find it?

  • Never heard that one? Does Scotland know how it affected America for the better? Made us turn around and fight harder upon the intellect of Thomas Paine? Paul Revere? The list is vast. Yet the reality is that Scots' always fight for freedom. The US is not a bunch of Yankees or Confederates. It is the oldest democracy that has ever survived in the history of man! In major part because of the sacrifices of those that were oppressed in Scotland.

  • The united states is not Democratic. There hasn't been a Democratic state since Athens was conquered by Alexander the Great. (All modern "democracies" are actually republics or aristocracies)

  • @icedragon769 I'd simply say that there has NEVER been a democratic state. The ancient Greek city-states may have styled themselves as democratic, but in reality there were a very broad oligarchy; gender, ethnicity, nationality, wealth and freedom all acted as pre-requisites to franchise. Progressive as it was for it's day, let's not put it on a pedestal.

  • The US is a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy.

  • I think I've heard this version too, one line I remember was

    Land o the deisel train

Big Fat maws and dirty weans

Somethin about kickin up hell in local boozers too......

  • I was Born Scottish I Live Scottish and I'll

    Die Scottish

    Long Live Scotland

    Saor Alba

  • sound needs to be turned up a bit but its funny

  • Great Posting...Thanks

  • Love it!

  • I grew up with these songs as my mum used to play them for me as her mum played them for her and my toddler is enjoying them now too - The Corries rock!

  • nice jumper

  • What a comely lass at 2:31 ;) ;) [The one in brown sweater]

  • "It's all we got, we must not lose 'em"

    Hahaha. Superb lyrics!

  • ALBA GU BRATH

  • lol i'm scottish and i found this hilarious

  • this made me laugh till i cried i have grown up listening to the corries but i have never hear this one before lol great job guys ~_-

  • I am not a SCOT but i wish i was one

  • nuff said !

  • Why can't people just listen to The Corries without having to make comments about politics etc? I grew up listening to them & knowing a lot of their songs because my dad liked them, but he liked them because their music was mainly folk music, not because he was a supporter of independence or the SNP, which incidentally, he isn't and neither am I & nor am I a Labour voter either. What does that make me to all the pro-SNP voters? A traitor to Scotland? I don't think so.

  • What does that do to SNP voters? Well you spoke your mind., I think that you believe in a union with the Brits. Personally I don't agree, still I respect you. I see a free Scot speaking. None that find freedom dear should question your stance. So no you are no traitor to Scotland. ~ Slainte

  • Yes! I notice these sort of comments on all of The Corries videos. How bloody ignorant of these people to not even notice the wonderful singing voices and musical abilities of Ronnie and Roy. Their talents have yet to matched to this day They were nothing less than the best folk group in Scotland. Appreciate them for it, people!

  • @thetrollfairy I could not agree more with you. They were a truly great duo. True musicians. Their musicianship shines through all their music.

  • Why? Because their music is very, very heavily political, that's why. With no offence intended, what do you expect?

  • @LaFarfalla246 Perhaps because the last line is 'when independance will be here'???

  • @LaFarfalla246 Perhaps because the last line is 'when independance will be here'???

  • @LaFarfalla246 the corries where involved in independence protests al there live thus the support form the snp

  • @LaFarfalla246 if they sing scottish folk songs then its natural the music will support independence and scotland as a nation. and thats due to the fact a huge chuck of scottish culture is the fight for independence over the centuries and the patrism.

and all n all another example why we should be asking oorselfs why the fuck we are still controled and brainwashed by westminster

  • @LaFarfalla246 Strange. How do you expect to get people to stop talking politics if you yourself have just banged on about yer own politics? Hypocrite!

  • INDEPENDANT SCOTLAND NOW

  • The english will cut you loose when they sucked all the north sea oil out...leaving you high & dry...like the leaches they are.

  • Well get to it. The times change quickly!

    ALBA GU BRATH!

  • If YA NEED A HAND getting the Brits out of your Land give us Irish a Call

  • Freedom? Those of us that came to America earned freedom by a lot of Scots that created a free state. I dare all Scots to study us and well. You in the ancestral home speak of it and have earned much yet you can do more!

  • We have earned so much, It was taken away because of the english. Industries such as fishing, ship building etc etc.

    Didn't us Scots invent everything?

Chloroform, Parafin oil, tyres, penicillin, television, radar, bicycles, cash credit, decimal points, continous electric light, colour photography, tarmac, noble gasses, faxmachines even your raincoat.

The english take advantage of this by calling us 'british' - making themselves look better. We speak of it because we have earned so much!

  • Take it back and hold onto it.

  • VOTE SNP
