If only someone with connections at the CTW Archives could find the episode where this first appeared...I read on Muppet Wiki that one of the other four test shows had it. (Talk about a long-lived classic...)
I have read two comments by people comparing this boy to Charlie Brown! I had not thought of it at first, but now I can see where you guys are coming from!
I remember this - but without the background music. Jbrangwynne53, you're right - the added sound effects are somewhat 'distracting.' The line 'had a bright notion, and cooked up a potion...' seems to stand out in my memory the most.
I believe the sound effects were added sometime in the '80s (I remember this version the best) and the music was added sometime in the '90s. The former is used as a "Season 1 Classic Cut" on the Old School Vol. 1 DVD.
As much as I hate the current producers sweetening old sketches, the version with the SFX only doesn't bother me for some reason. Same w/ the SFX in the ringmaster sketches.
I agree with you man. I have a copy of This Frog in my favorites but in the beginning of the video when the other frog laughs at Kermit they play this really annoying music. I can't stand it even though I love the song.
I remember the sound effects being in the original. But that music just clouds the information. The words should be allowed to be heard, without any distracting music added.
Well, maybe I was being a tad harsh in the description. It's not as bad as other updates to classic sketches. It's just the whole idea of it altogether just ticks me off.
Well, they added the music at a point in time when they were adding music to almost every cartoon segment on the show, that being in the mid '90's. Why? We'll never know.
That's what I meant when I said "Hopefully, someone posts the original version of this segment," in the description. By that, I meant the version with just narration.
LOL I thought of that sketch, actually. Those waiter sketches make me hungry, too, but I watched Sesame Street as a child while eating my dinner, so it could be a sense memory.
I too would enjoy it much better without the music. I enjoyed this one very much as a kid (I'm 46 now.)

The sound effects were added in the '80s. The music was added around 2000.

Hmm, I always recall that the sounds were there at the first. Maybe I'm getting old.

The music ruined it! Could someone upload this without the music? T_T

This was another one I remember as a small child. I can't for the life of me think why, but I was terrified of some of these animated shorts.

The way the boy talks reminds me of Charlie Brown.

@Pooleman96 I thought I was the only one who thought he sounded like Charlie Brown.

I think the music was added around 2000, because I saw this in a Sprout airing of a 1998 episode, and that didn't have the music.

The music does fit the skit nicely, I will say. (ducks to avoid tomatoes)

The music sounds remastered. Actually, I don't remember any music, just narration.

What's worse to me is that this version is the one that stands as a 1969 film, even on the "Old School" DVD.

It almost suggests to me that they found no need to keep the original in their archives. Or they lost it somehow.

A staple of my childhood. Thanks for the memories.

This always made me hungry. Nothing like alphabet soup on a cold day.

At least it beats the first Waiter Grover sketch, where Fat Blue wanted EVERY single letter in his bowl of Alphabet Soup.
