Hi, for those who are still interested, this version was included in the CD "Middle Kingdom II' produced in 1993 by Newnore Music Production Ltd in Hong Kong.

According to the producer's note, the lyrics come from the "Dream of the Red Chamber" and the melody was written by Liu Xuean [刘雪庵]. The singer was Katusha Tsui [徐慧]. Phrasing of the melody has been changed by the producer for modern taste.

Her singing is very classical, very disciplined , too academic to my taste and it has nothing to do with the modern musical version. Good will but didn't work well together. How pity!

Any idea who were the girls at around 0:43 and 1:50? what kind of costume were they wearing? It looks Manchurian. It was so absolutely graceful and beautiful and did exemplify the special quality that is exclusive to oriental women.

Actually the clothing at 0:43 are clothing worn during the late Qing Dynasty and during the time of the Nationalist (ROC) party of China.

1:50 is more ambiguous, but from the nail accessory on her fingers, it also belongs in the mid-late Qing Dynasty Era.

This song I feel did depict what the bygone era generation of females felt like as being so helpless and lost in a big rich family, as much as a canary in a golden cage.

She was a beautiful and tender woman and needed not to worry about her moral needs. So why is so much sadness?

The girls wearing the traditional Han's clothes are someones of the Jin-ling(old name of Nan-jing) 12 ladies.

The song(in fact it is a poem wrote by Cao-xue-qin---the author of Red chamber)) is for the love beteewn Jia-bao-yu(the lead male) and Lin-dai-yu(the lead female-one of the 12ladies)

You got the idea right about rich family. The story is about the culture and tradition in rich families. It is a sad story about a romance between a sickly, but beautiful lady, and a man.

Yep heard this song when small. In Malaysia back in the 60's, we have 'Redifusion' connected to my house and it blares music and everything from dawn to midnight, that's how I was exposed to all kinds of music. Maybe even moulded my appreciation of music of all kinds. This song was shelved very deeply in my mind until snatched back just now. Very happy to hear this song. Almost nostalgic !.
