If all it took was money to cure cancer, it would have been cured already. Advances in medical technology need to be made. There's a lot of other govt waste.
Most of us couldn't pass the physical, and complete the training to do this. Francis Gary Powers had his U2 brought down by a SAM missile in Russia, that's true. But what brought him down, was the shock wave from a SAM that hit a Russian MIG that was in pursuit of Powers. Acc. to the book Skunk Works the Russians shot 14 Sams at him, and he was being chased by a MIG. One Sam hit the MIG, and the shockwave knocked the tail off of Powers' U2. Otherwise, it flew too high for the Russians 2 get
it saddens me only a few individuals get to experience this.. if money, the biggest cancer on the planet, vanished, we would all get a chance to have this amazing experience.
Credit goes to Kelly Johnson, first team leader of Lockheed's "Skunk Works." He was unequaled as an aircraft engineer and innovator. He played a leading role in the design of over forty aircraft, including the U-2 in 1954, which was developed to monitor the Soviet ICBM threat. U-2S/ER-2 Dragon Lady (1998) are re-designations for the TR-1A. All is kidding aside, knowing or seeing that mankind can go to space ( where space travel commun place) is something that I would like to see at the end of my lifetime. But "it takes a world to make a world" and we still have unresolved global issues at hand. so my advice: until that day comes; let's not screw ourselves up people...
looking at these comments i realize that only americans are so stupid to talk about complete total bs on such an amazing video. Thank you for sharing.
@jasonthemankiller Hah... not an RPG7, an SA-2 in 1960. An SA-2 is a massive Surface to Air Missile about the length of telephone pole that was almost purpose built for shooting down high flying aircraft like the U-2..
Nothing shoulder launched will get remotely close to a cruising U-2.
@jasonthemankiller Well, yes they did shoot one down in the 60's piloted by Gary Powers who became a POW, later echanged for a Russian spy, just one comment though, an RPG stands for Rocket propelled grenade which is used for light armor, at the time the Russians used a surface to air missile unknown to the americans to have such range.
@jasonthemankiller With the amount of people that visit this page who think Call of Duty is a realistic take on warfare, there are no shortage of folks who seem to think such a thing is actually possible. It becomes difficult to tell who is telling a poor joke and who is being sincerely ignorant.
@jasonthemankiller - Seven U-2s have ever been shot down: one over the Soviet Union (Francis Gary Powers), five over China, and one over Cuba (Rudolf Anderson),during the Cuban missile crisis. The Republic of China (Taiwan) was the only other operator. Three pilots were killed, and two captured. Not quite sure what missiles the Chinese used..
@vm9645 NASA doesnt want to lose its funding and prevent anyone from knowing the truth...........so they hired 45 people to make accounts and dislike this video
This guy better be careful on this flight, he might just have to say something good about an American made product by the time he's done...anybody who's seen Top Gear knows he's pretty much incapable of it.
@serongue If I am not mistaken that is correct, although some of the X-planes have flown very high, the X-15 in particular holds a few flight records for any winged aircraft till today.
@trespire@serongue Its a bit more complicated than that. As far as records go, everything is split into different classes. The SR-71 holds the record for sustained altitude by an air-breathing engine.
Others have been higher, but being powered by rockets (X-15) or zoom climbing (MiG-25, getting to top speed, then pulling up and climbing until the engines flame out and it stalls), these achievements are classed differently.
Spectacular video! One correction, though. When crossing 50K feet Brian said that in the '50s they would have been astronauts. Not quite. The "edge of space" back then was defined as 50 miles, not 50,000 feet (which is not quite 10 miles). Today it's around 62K feet (100 KM). The only airplane to have crossed 50 miles is the X-15.
ive always wanted to skydive from the edge of the atmosphere like this, but i have to wait a couple more years. this video is enough for me to become a pilot for nasa
@bryUK I thought they were small wheels, but no matter. The pilot of a U2 has to continue flying the airplane after touchdown to keep it level since the wingtip skid/wheels cannot take much load.
@Ashtree81 It is merely a powered glider although a bit more exotic than the ones I have flown. The take off angle is the same as a winched glider start and passengers usually react the same way as May
When I went across the Atlantic in a 747 this summer at 42,000 feet, I found myself looking out of the windows to see if it looked anything like this :) You actually can see the sky a lot darker and bluer even on a regular airliner - try it :)
@kinsley2108 The wings have to rub against the ground when they land. They have a car chase after them on the run way to spot for them because it is very hard to land it.
this is amazing! its crazy to think a plane can still fly up there I guess thats what that crazy wingspan is for. I wonder if they get any close encounters on occasion?
"They are there to assist the pilot, especially on landing. Landing a U-2 is a very difficult and delicate operation, having to land nose-wheel first." in this landing, he did not land nose-wheel first. 8:08
@bguzman003 good question. it seems to be rather slow. By the time it is up there it might have burned a lot of fuel so it is lighter. The idea seems to be to maximize lift/weight and minimize drag. Not to go super sonic as with the SR-71.
@bguzman003 the air is not very dense that high so the airspeed readings would be somewhat inaccurate.. they may in fact be traveling 500 knots (example) but the airspeed would only register 80ish (example) Seeing how they got off the ground in 1000 feet I and the design of the wings I assume the plane can fly very slow and loiter for a very long time...
"technically speaking"... that would be 13 miles above the earth... oh..... big deal...really high up...wow...so high up......that's nearly 14 miles above the surface I'm feeling so emotional...
