I love his versatility. How great can a song get? This is so wonderful. Thank you for posting it. I love the music with his major back-up, but my favorites are basically him with his guitar and a bit of back-up. I have been in love for decades. Thank you for this wonderful song and video!
I've been a fan of Ry for God knows how long and I've heard many recordings and seen him play this song live so many times. He is never content just to keep churning out the same version of a song and changes the arrangement. I missed this version at the time but it is far and away the best with a truly awesome, really moving lead break. I wish I could play like that.
hendrix clapton page ..who cares! none of them good enough to wipe cooders arse for him ...check out his accoustic fingerpicken on "Noboby" from carnegie hall ..just amazing
I remember hearing this on 'Whistle Test' in '81. I thought the recording had been lost or erased. Thank you so much for uploading it-one of the finest live performances I can remember and so profound and moving, even today, nearly 30 years on.
Pick up on this guitar looks more like a P-90. He also played a white Strat with a cream soapbar P-90 on it. The lap steel pick up is usually seen on one of his sunburst Strats - watch the Santa Cruz concerts (Bl**dy guitar anoraks!). Can't help feeling that tone has more to do with soul....try what pick-ups you like, us mortals will never get that tone. That lick at 3:54...there are tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. God bless you, Mr. Cooder.
you'll never get that tone even he doesn't these days - because he never plays that guitar anymore - if you look closely you'll see the back pickup is a huge '64 national lapsteel pickup.
He's playing a rare, bound-fingerboard 1967 Strat. There is a Gibson P-90 pickup installed in the back position, but it's not being used here. What you hear is his Strat's great regular Fender middle pickup. It;s the "Into The Purple Valley" sound, a tone he has mostly abandoned. I always loved this tone!
@superreverbking -So what is the deal with 60's Strats? Why do so many musicians claim they were the best ever made? Surely with the tecno advances of the last 40 years they could have developed something better? It does not speak well of Fender or Gibson that musicians the world over still play guitars that are 40+ years old
@hoarse01 Each guitar stands on it's own, whether it was made forty years ago or four. Ry Cooder just has the chops to get the best out of his instruments. This particular Strat happens to have a great tone and always did when he had it configured this way (the Dan Armstrong plug-in compressor and Dumble amp doesn't hurt either :). The guitar now has been extensively modified, with different pickups and the like.
sometimes people labor under the misapprehension that technology is a good thing.
not.
guitars sound good, more than anything else, because a particular guitar
is made from a particular piece of wood that just has that 'mojo' billy gibbons will tell you about 'pearly gates' and thats what he means. paf pickups help, and they were the tech of the times, but its that special piece of wood. i have a squire tele that fits the bill.ry could make a teisco sound good
This performance is pure Gold, there's no other way to describe it and the lyrics are still so true and profound to this day that it's kinda frightening that even in this day and age, all the same old bullshit is still going on to this very day.
I personally think this song should be re-released into the charts because I think quite alot of people can easily relate to this song in alot of ways :)
Thank you so much for uploading this, top rating always and added to faves :)
saw this tour remember it well ,jim dickinson is playing piano/keyboards died few weeks back.cooder is god like and he walks among us we should be grateful, when they write the lists it should read;beethoven - cooder- who else? come on dare you to add your name.
