Well, a well known sound to me. My Dad has some installed from the late 70s. Never changed the ballast, the starters once in a blue moon. They virtually never break so they get next to none maintenance. Heck, I even never paid attention that the sound of newer fixtures might have changed.

Interesting! They could be called "musical" fluorescent lights. The reverb in the room made it sound eerie and sci-fi like.

Those starters can make some interesting noises when they fire up, especially if there are multiple lights installed on one area.
