It's a percussion instrument like a tambourine but without jigles/zils. Unlike a drum it isn't closed at both ends.

Historically it was used at times of war and marriage as an announcement.

It's the only instrument allowed by hadith. It's being played in the background of this nasheed and doesn't have elements like other instuments that make you wanna 'move'.
