Since Snow Leopard you can set windows to minimize to the application icons to save on dock space. I recommend that you and any body else who hasn't enables this option. There's no reason not to. Also, having your HD display on the desktop is NOT standard (which would suggest default). Not since Snow Leopard anyway. Only mounted volumes appear on the desktop unless you set it otherwise.
@bryguytechtv1 yeah, i know i put mine there because it was annoying me not having it. cuz otherwise i wouldnt have any icons. :P
