Judging by the setting, this is probably set in the 50's, when homosexuality was, if even acknowledged in the slightest, was considered a 'disease'. Nicholas is attracted to Bobby and when he kisses him, it 'kills' Bobby and that side of him stays with Nicholas. His father appears through Roy because he is also a male. If you notice, his mother stays the same throughout the film.
Very strange movie,, but I'm enjoying it :) :) and i love that kid: Nicholas ;)
