The Four Seasons were great. I wish I could hit the high note like Frankie Valli, but someone would have to give me a swift kick someplace to achieve that. I'll leave the high notes to Frankie Valli, Lou Christie, and the late Eddie Kendricks(Temptations)!
They were on the way to the recording studio when they stopped at a red light. A girl in shabby clothes approached their car and asked if they wanted their window cleaned (a common thing back then). The song was written at the studio the same day. I'm not sure if this is all correct, but I heard this story sometime ago (years).
I didn't know this song... No need to search further to know where the Rubettes took their inspiration for "Sugar Baby Love", "Tonight" and thier other shitty hits...
In a weird way, I always thought this song was a sort of "answer song" to Patches by Dickie Lee, except in this one, she doesn't kill herself, and he's going to live to fight another day against his parents' smallmindedness.
@bheffley2002 For those who don't already know, Patches was one of the many Teen Age Death Songs of the early 60's, about a boy forbidden to date a shabby-genteel girl. Both kids kill themselves.
My mom had all these records. She had a portable stereo HiFi (about the size of a suitcase) that you could stack 45's and they'd drop one by one(sometimes it would malfunction and drop more!). The speakers could be lifted off their pegs and set proportionately. It was great.
@Jackspadeproductions Don't feel so alone. ever notice that most of the groups that are super popular ie beatles stones beach boys and to many to mention.another group tries to emulate their sound? nobody as far as i know did this with the Seasons.reason? no one could/and ever will.
In 1964 when this song came out, I was8 years old and we always went down to Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk Ct.. There was a snack bar with a big jukebox thundering this song several times an hour. I would swing on the swings to this song...still think about those swings everytime I hear this!

me too i grew up broke in middle america....fleeced by the academic world and learned how to think like for profit, but mostly non profit corporations. i ripped off a lot of medium, and larger corps before 9/11 and luckily never got caught. when i drive to my various homes in the west and baltimore, md. i play this tune!! Go USA!! hehe dave d.
Frankie Valli has touched the music industry so much that he will go down in history amazing group of musicians i just think everyday, What happened to the good old days like this.
I used to cry to this song because I was called "rag doll". We didn't have much, and I used to be proud of the patches my mother would put in my favorite little pink pants and other clothes, but I was told I wasn't good enough for the guy I thought liked me. I was clean, I was good and I was innocent, but I was a "rag doll".
I cry no longer because I made a difference in my life - I "beat the system", but I cannot hear this song without remembering how cruel others can be.
Thanks Wolverine for providing the song. I've asked radio stations to play this song "Rag Doll" but it fell upon deaf ears. This is my favorite from the Four Seasons.
Great song. On one of the other video versions of this song, it showed Frankie Valli and his guys playing instruments. Were the four seasons actually playing this music, or did they have other back-up musicians?

When I first heard this song back in 1964 I was only ten years old then. I was at a school for boys back then a place called Saint Agnes in Sparkill New York, Rockland County. We were mostly inner city kids from New York City who were brought their for various reasons. When we first heard them we thought they were African Americans. The Latinos and blacks were into the 4 seasons because they sang more like Motown groups. Little did we know they were Italians from New Jersey. They were great!
@54nomore I'm not very old I'm only sixteen and you have listened to this music far longer than I, so i feel out of place saying this but, I dont they sound anything like motown really, when you look at the temptations and smokey robinson and his group, they sound very different.
@kaliedoscopesharinga They sound somewhat different and yet the same. Their great harmonizing and Frankie's high falsetto voice were more in tune to the African American style than any white group back in the 60's.
Actually they do sound like Motown- four part harmonies. High falsetto voice great backing drum beat, and that doo-wop sound, Exactly what the motown sound is all about! It's because your not old enough to even understand Motown music.
@kittycatty89 Not neccisarily, They are both structured very similarly but do not sound much the same at all. Were do you go from the girls alright with me....... to dawn go away i'm no good for you. My opinion is that they don't sound the same. Listen to get ready by the temptations then listen to this. then listen to tracks of my tears by smokie robinson to listen to this. Structured similarly. But they dont sound the same.
Sitting here on a beautiful June morning, putting off work, listening to this -- makes it early summer of 1964 all over again. Just what it felt like -- "I Get Around" and "A Hard Days Night" and "Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl" and "Can't You See That She's Mine" and "Chapel of Love" and "Don't Throw Your Love Away." This one may be the best of a very good lot. What a great use of three minutes of your life.
Truly classic music that will never die. Old school forever! And you don't have to be a Baby Boomer to like this stuff. I wasn't even close to born when this stuff came out. That's respect and love for good music, unlike the crap today! Love Rock!
This is the record that proved you didn't need half of what Phil Spector used to make a wall of sound. Sometimes, in the right hands, all you need is a drummer, a bass, a guitar, a glock, and four voices . . .
I had a friend who had a store called Glad Rags. He sold designer clothes at the store. The store was located in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. His Mother worked for Jones of NY. I thought that the name of his store was very catchy. He was also a very unique individual.
A superlative recording and arrangement, and really quite a groundbreaking song for its day, and not just in its lyrics - "Rag Doll" just didn't seem to follow any of the usual melody and chord progressions you would have expected back then. It was just full of surprises, not the least of which was the fact that a gem like "Silence is Golden" was tucked away on its B-side! What a superb single all round!.
@optandus i agree optandus, many music critics say rag doll is the complete culmination of everything the 4 seasons were in guess in the way of thier sound. i heard that rolling stone recently put up top 100 groups of all time, still not including these guys. i understand why bob gaudio, when he was told that the top 500 songs did not include any seasons cuts or vallis efforts, can rolling stone be that blind, orstupid,or both? steve
I understand what you mean. It's sad. I was lucky enough to be exposed to it as a kid & now my kids listen to this kind of music with me & they love it!!! They're 9 & 6 yrs old:)
@interstateruler As far as I'm concerned, this kind of music is the BEST, period!!!! We have a band here in my area of Canada, called the Lincolnaires. The group started 53 years ago and they play only 50's and 60's music. I just LOVE them!!!! :o)
@fntime hehe acutally im 14 i just put the age of 21 to watch 18+ vids. and second of all i already cleaned my room and did my homework and im at home
I remember listening to the top 500 songs of all time on the CBS radio station - and this one would always be like like in the top 50 or so. Sometimes, it did better than that - like the the top 30 or 20 even. Point being - this is a classic, and always will be. Probably the Four seasons best recording.
Wow, Sherry !? That's interesting. I wasn't aware of that. But yeah, Sherry was a great song as well. I like just about all of their songs. Dawn, and Big girls don't cry, and Marianne are some of my other 4 Season favorites. What a wonderful group they were. Anyway, thanks for sharing that bit of trivia. By the way, let me know if you, or anyone else here can upload a good quality track of Marianne here on utube. The ones they here so far are not so good. I guess it's hard to find.
@dappylu and yet rolling stone did not have even 1 of their songs on their 500 greatest of all time list.that got to gaudio who usualiy lets stuff like that roll off his back
You know something, I always knew that Franki Valli could sing, but it just dawned on me that he was FINE and full of Northeast machoism. DAMN, i am sorry i was so young not to realize that back then.
Another GREAT ONE...Thank you for posting...this. O dislikes... Wow...wonder why.... A great song and group...and they wrote and sang and played their own songs... Gotta love it. thank you again for posting it!
My old girls name was Tasha, but she always called me her Rag Doll... this was our song.... lame if you think of it cuz we were two girls who loved Horrorcore and ICP. But this song makes me cry. She died on 9-8-08 May her soul rest in piece. I love her so much still. Thank you for making this video.... it still hurts thinking she is gone, but this eases the pain some! <3 ty <3
This video is posted on Facebook page called "Golden Tunes - Sound of Oldies", so if you have fb account and some time, check it, i guess you will like it :) Page is for everyone who like like warm cozy sound of evergreen music.
lol im glad my dad lisins to this or id never have lisiend to this this is real rock i hate all that rap and hip hop crap some of its good but most of it you want to shot yur head off
A show band I once worked with did this as the opener for a 15-minute 4S medley (drummer managed to play the glockenspiel lick without missing a beat!). The audience always got super quiet and we could see their eyes misting up. Still powerful stuff, despite the years.
This is such a great song. I love the Four Seasons! Frankie Valli has such an incredible voice and an incredible range. I went to see Jersey Boys a couple years ago and loved it. God how I love '60s music!
thanks for posting this but, you're not supporting musicians by buying music. you are supporting record companies. record companies delete our beloved oldies from youtube. the best musicians are dead or retired. music used to be free on the radio, but the radio won't even play music this good anymore.
It is a powerful message that he will see past her social class to the beautiful girl inside.

@thefatassunicorn I was going to remind you that people have nostalgia
songs that bring back wonderful moments.
I took the time to look at your Channel, cartoons and Justin Bieber.
You are 21 yrs old and still doing cartoons. (lol)
Justin Bieber (lol)!
How about you clean your room, Junior. And listen to mom,
she doesn't need your back talk youngin.
Also, before you criticize music, put back your hearing aid.
"Now go home and get your fuckin' shinebox!"

Thanks so much for posting this original recording ! Dawn and Rag Doll were my favorites over the more popular Sherry ...

I remember listening to the top 500 songs of all time on the CBS radio station - and this one would always be like like in the top 50 or so. Sometimes, it did better than that - like the the top 30 or 20 even. Point being - this is a classic, and always will be. Probably the Four seasons best recording.
gendres1 1 year ago
@gendres1 Sherry remains their biggest hit, however, your right this was a huge huge hit for the boys and might be one of their best ever.

@jkoncz

@gendres1 i thought Oh What a Night was their biggest hit.

@gendres1 it made #1 on CBS 500 countdown in 2010. :)

You know something, I always knew that Franki Valli could sing, but it just dawned on me that he was FINE and full of Northeast machoism. DAMN, i am sorry i was so young not to realize that back then.

<3 ty <3

I remember the day this song was released, it hit the charts at #1, that's how hugely popular Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons were. Sweet memories...
