@ndpier Look at my video, spey rod pike explained. It shows many of the flies I use. Big clousers also work but were not mentioned in the other video. The best flies are the Reynolds and the Dahlberg Mega Diver. Good luck and tight lines.
Thanks so much for posting this. I have been rolling this idea around in my head for a couple years now. I usually fish our local reservoirs with a single hand 10 weight. I cast bunny flies. They are a great durable pike fly, but they sure are hard to cast. By the end of the day, I damn near need shoulder surgery. Between the wind, giant wet flies, and constantly casting that pool stick... It kicks my butt. I'm going to get a spey rod and try this. Thanks again for the post. :)
@CoolLikePenguinNuts I'm sure you will like it. I wrecked my back, and spey casting is easier on it to. Plus I don't get tennis elbow by the end of summer either. You can cast some pretty beefy flies this way to, not to mention how far you cas toss them. Spey casting gets you farther away so you can cover far more water as well.
I was actually agreeing with you,, as I tried this lower angled rod in my small flat, with the end of leader tied to window handle! -I realised that you can actually almost point rod at fish, and you get benefit of butt strength of rod, which you don't if rod held nearer vertical Great vid.! Why do you use such a light tippet?
@darkmossie633 I was using an 8lb. tippet, because I was trying to break the Walleye record for that line. I had been getting so many big Pike while doing it that I was using a short piece of 30lb mono attached with a bimini twist of about 16lb. The overall length of the bite tippet/shock tippet to the first single line is less than 12" due to IGFA rules. I use big pike flies a lot this way, and instead of the light line I use heavier stuff and a steel bite tippet.
i notice you playin fish with rod more down to horizontal, bringing the butt end of rod into play-most fishing manuals tell you always to keep rod high, but this
@darkmossie633 There are several reasons here. First there is 8 lb line on. The more the rod is bent the more drag on the line. The greater the risk of breaking the fish off. Second, if the rod is to high and the fish turns and runs at you it is hard to keep up with a fly reel and you have no place to go with the rod. Third, the rod is 15' long and holding it high makes fish more likely to jump. It is less risky to avoid making the fish jump. Beginners should just hold it high to avoid slack.
@ManicMindTrick I am also using an albright knot and bimini twist to put a 30lb. mono bite tippet on there also. The mono bite tippet is only about 5 inches long. I think I get more hits with a less visible leader.
very nice pike

kind of fishing is exception to rule?
