GLORIOUS , INDEED! i'm a pianist myself and know these works and have heard tons of versions...Rubinstein's is, imo, the best rendition. there was a line in a time article decades ago - on his 60th birthday that is apt :
"while rubinstein may not have Horowitz's technical wizardry, or Richter's Mystical Flights, or Serkin's Cerebral approach -- Rubinstein is more than the separate elements -- his is MORE than the SUM of the parts".
@nancymccracken i have yet to hear, for instance , any pianist , legendary or not, that renders those opening full chords rising up with such a FULLNESS of tone that's Grand, Big, Majestic and Lyrical all at the same time, rather than harshness or steeliness with some , or just loudness...his is a "TONE" of pianism that simply "embraces" you with warmth. inimitable, really.
