  • In no way does this music sound anything like Billy Currington's People Are Crazy !! You are if you think so. Rock on Bob.

  • hi katy good singer bob is good thumbs up

  • what part of this dont you get? he turned away before the answer.

  • 1977, San Diego, CA., Bunch of us used to get together at a friends house the same time every week, while his dad was at this Elks meeting. I'm 18 and I'm with my future husband. We would shoot pool and party. This music was always playing. I took it upon myself to watch after his mom, who was having her own party in the kitchen, completely alone. I couldn't leave her by herself all night. When I hear this, it's her I think of. She was so kind and seeing her like that just broke my heart.

  • i have the night moves cd. my favorite songs are rock n' roll never forgets, night moves, sunburst, main street, come to poppa, and ship of fools.

  • bob, one of the underrated singers in the world...the boss comes in there too!

  • Aha!!! That county dude stole this melody for "people are crazy"!!!!!

  • Classic Bob Seger, thoughtful lyrics: The "ship of fools" is an allegory/ metaphor for any group of people without a good leader; oblivious to their surroundings, arguing amongst themselves, and clueless as to the destination of their journey. They, and all who travel with them are destined for shipwreck. Rock on forever, Bob Seger!

  • Wow... the memories that just came flooding back. Shit.

  • probably wouldnt even get a recording contract today.

music execs wouldnt spot talent if it bit them on the arse.

the greatest american rock star ever

  • @wil979 recording contracts are mostly offered to musicians that entertain for the masses because that's where the money is. music propagated by the mass media seems to be less creative and less meaningful than that of lesser known musicians and bands, that is until those same unknowns find themselves in the spotlight. that's my theory at least. something like that. im thinking way too hard about this. im gonna go listen to a song now.

  • there are many many reasons Bob is one of the great voices of American rock...but few songs illustrate why better than this. A lost classic...from a time when talent, and character, still mattered.

Proving that the old adage is not always right...sometimes nice guys finish first.

  • Seen this band many times. one of the greatest tunes, I play it for my children and now grandchildren

  • Totally Awesome..Best concert I ever saw up close and personal....Thanks for putting these songs out to share...Peace .from Mollypillpockets...

  • First heard this in Korea 1978.

  • awesome song another great one is "Till it Shines"... It brings back awesome memories, kids nowdays need to listen to real music and not the slag shit corporation puppets are putting out....

  • this song puts me in the fuckin mood-love it

  • im a highschool freshman and my english teacher decided to play music. i requested bob seger and she replied:how old ARE you!?!?

  • I WAS IN US NAVY!SAN DIEGO.THEY.HAD NO IDEA WHO BOB SEGAR WAS.I HAD NO IDEA WHO STEVE MILLER WAS CALIFORNIA&INDIANA ROCKED ON,THEY LOVED BOB&STROH BEER,DETRIOT STROH!LOVE YA MAN!

  • I am 46years old. This song takes me back to my teenage years.Young people today has no idea who Bob Seger is.

  • @seaspray1292 a lot do just returned from seeing him 11/17 lots behind me knew every word to every song he sang...I ask if they were even born when he wrote the songs....nope..but they rocked it out and so did I at almost 60!!!!

  • This album is a classic. my fav song of his..

  • can't ever get enough Bob!

  • Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!

Bob had many good songs, but I think his 1972-78 period was best, and this is one of the best from that time.

    Thanks for posting this.

    :)

  • 30 years ago, haha what a ride since then,Bob Seger was allways i way out when i was feeling down and blue, his music his words we aways so soothing,i play and write my own music now when i heard him ,i had to start writing ,with a grade 10 high school,i did my best, and thanks to him, i have 40 well written songs which i keep to myself ,maybe one day i,ll record.thanks Bob.

  • There could never be anything better then Bob Seger music, I fell in live with his music in the 70s and still listen to him almost every day..

  • Awesome tune with a message about us men who sometimes get too aloof in our own worlds to pay attention to those who love us.

    .

Gentlemen, this is a latin tempo. . .dance with your lady, she'll love it.

  • @jdh501

    You are so right!!!

  • Jerry Luck on accordion

  • Always been the best, more than one meaning, just listen...

  • ...Man Bob, How did you know so many of us have sailed on a ship of fools?

  • A true good guy and father to his still young children. Yes, we are lucky to have him in our presence in Detroit, and elsewhere.

  • Yes, a brilliant song, one of the most underrated of all time. The lyrics are so descriptive and clear, and the pace of the song fits the story being told. Bob Seger expresses a rare quality of having a soothing, comforting voice, even when describing a troubling setting or situation. That treasure being similar to the great Van Morrison. We are so fortunate to have these hidden gems of the great artists in our mist.

  • @aliasdyln33 I TOTALLY AGREE-- THIS ARTIST CAPTURED MY SOUL OH, ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO AND STILL REMAINS MY MOST FAVORITE OF ALL!!!! I LOVE BOB SEGER!!!!

  • anyone know the chords for this song?

    thanks

  • a safe jouney thru tubulent seas ~

  • if my fiancee leaves me then she dont love me im drinking bourbon at 3:47 in the mroning and listening to bob sege

  • 'Night Moves' was the 3rd album I ever purchased...it kick started a lifetime love of the Silver Bullet Band! Haven't heard this tune in a long time. Love it!

  • Seeger rules.., Then, as well as now... listen to his new album, "wait for me" or "chances are"...or anyone else, for that matter...

  • @berrycph1 "Seeger Rules".....you outta be SHOT....if you think he rules, can't you AT LEAST give him proper tribute and spell his name correctly???? WTF???

  • @bigragoo0214 Get em bigragoo, they will spell it right next time, its a respect thing i understand what you are saying i hate it to.

  • love this song....surprising so few know this one

  • in my opinion, one of his best songs. its a shame its not as well known as say, night moves or against the wind.

  • 3 people dont know music at all

  • @MrnoWun0 Indeed, well my vote goes to the likes, for sure. Bob Rocks!

  • springsteen of seger i dont now

  • See, I'm left thinking that Seger simply wrote this song about a shipwreck with no one alterior meaning. I'm lead to believe he did it in this manner because he knew it would spark a deeper meaning in the listener's own views. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" kind of thing.

  • @48030Svatz I agree with you. I believe that's the intention when most artist's write a song. They want us to get our own personal take on the song. And everybody is going get something different from it because our interpretation of a song is based on our own life experiences. That's how is should be. That's all we have to base anything on. There are exceptions. Gordon Lightfoots "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald". I think we can all agree what that songis about.

  • Sebastian Brant (1457 – 10 May 1521) was an Alsatian humanist and satirist, best known for his satire Das Narrenschiff (The Ship of Fools).

    --- Wikipedia

  • best album ever. great post!

  • Great song!

  • A 1962 novel by American writer, Katherine Anne Porter of the same name, set in the autumn of the year 1931, also uses the device of the allegory, Ship of Fools, and can be seen as an attack on a world that allowed the Second World War to happen

  • To me it has nothing to do with the sea at all. It's an allegory. The Ship might be the Ship of State, or an organization, or business. Old McFee represents the crew who know only their own small part, nothing of the wider aims, and want to know nothing more.. The captain listens to no-one, shares nothing, goes his own way. When the failure comes, only the one who has the skills to start again, survives it.

  • A better sea-faring type of song than Buffet could write. At least it doesn't dwell endlessly on marguerita's and touristy beach-style crap

  • ~Davy Jones's locker~

  • what a great song

  • Great album!

  • One of my favorite Bob Seger tunes ...

  • I've been to atleast a hundred concerts over the past 35 yrs and the first Seger show was unforgetable we got up front and everyone was repeating over and over "I knew it I knew he was the best" and looking back......we were all probably right!!

  • Forget the music, the guy is a masterful poet.

  • nobody has talent like this anymore

  • I love Bob Seger

  • big Mac!

  • Una de tantas obras maestras de aquellos tiempos de cuando la música pop comercial aún podía ser buena (y no como ahora).

  • This is one of those great offbeat songs that Seger did a bunch of ... most have never seen the light of day.

Hopefully someday he will choose to release them!

  • I love this song, but it's not really about being on the ocean. It's about life and trusting people and being let down. It's a great song has always been one of my favorites~!!!

YES SEGER RULES I VOTED HIM IN FOR THE HALL OF FAME. PEACE SEGER AND THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GREAT MUSIC IN MY LIFE!!!

  • This was the flipside of Night Moves' 45.

  • @Thadesgal That's it! I was trying to think what the other song was. It use to be on the old juke box at the hang out by our old high school. I nearly wore the grooves out of this side. Had it on an 8 track to and did wear it out. Always wondered why it wasn't a hit.

  • lv it Thank You for the posting here. kikkinas

  • That frozen light house on lake erie wood be nice in this slide show

  • i like this sond but it makes me depressed

  • Thanks Fandust. This song has special meaning to me.Served aboard the the first DP DrillShip in the world...6 years of my life. The Movie "Ship of Fools" was filmed on this ship in 1965...purchased from MGM and converted in about 1967. A !943 Army transport built in Long Beach,Ca. Almost went down on Her twice. Once in the Bering Straights, once in the Santa Barbara Channel. "This is Music Son" as one Ol' Boy posted.

  • I've never thought that this was anything to do with the sea at all. It's an allegory. The ship could be a business, or a school, or a government, on the wrong track led by a person who thinks he knows it all. It comes to a sticky end, leaving only the person who could foresee the consequences.

  • Quiet possibly the best Bob Seger song of all times.

  • Me and Eddie Huckleberry played this song over and over one night to write down all the words only to find out that they were already written down in the album cover; you can't find that in the new CDs or iTunes downloads.

  • It's a great song. Shades of Moby Dick and John Garfield in the movie. Nice video. Bob is to be congratulated for consistently creating quality songs while so many others were just producing pap. It was risky but paid off for him. I've always loved this song since the first time I heard it.

  • awesome tune

  • The Night Kitchen Crew consisted of both civilian and navey personnel. We were on the USS JUNEAU the first navey ship on the site of Bligh Reef. Exxon Oil Spill of 1989. We used to listen to this in the scullery, where as a woman, I fought for my place on every ship. There were four. I learned alot there. Gave me respect for the men and women that protect our waters. It was hard to leave each ship, leaving new friends. But knowing there were friends to still find. Thank you for posting this. jo

  • @donjorock Nice post about Ship Of Fools... your post speaks to the spirit of the song. Special thanks to you for helping in the very important work of taking care of America and Americans Jo!

  • Back in 1500's fool was another name for being "crazy". So the people would put all the crazy folk on a ship that was in old or in disrepair. Then send them to sea to......die. The ship would sink or turn over. In the song he says "I alone possessed the tools" meaning a sound mind.

  • @al35077 I knew there was a story. I appreciate it. I assumed (wrongly) that it was about a ship that was running drugs. "Something hidden down below" "It became too clear" "Everything I asked about seemed private" and the way the Captain listened quietly then turned away.

  • Thanks for posting this. I had this on a 45 as a teenager in the 80's and still ranks up there in my top three Seger songs ever.

  • captain called....

  • BRINGS BACK GREAT MEMORIES

  • I guess, in a way, we've all been there at some time or another, but hey what a great "slice of life"!!

  • I always thought this song was metaphor for something deeper than a shipwreck. I sometimes think it's of the survivor of a bad relationship or bad family situation. But I could be over-reaching. Great song either way.

  • Beautiful Song !

  • So many memorys , this is just brilliant !!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this, such a beautiful song. why cant I get this on itunes ?

  • I used to commercial fish, this is one of my favorite song kicking back after the fish had been put on the tender. Made it through another day. Thanks for posting

  • as an ex merchant marine, man does this hit home. Lost a few brothers, they had not the "tools".People we gotta share them 'tools' all will survive aboard that way.Peace in the streets.. and then he turned away......

  • dam

  • Great song brings back memories........... :)

  • its funny how everyone interpets songs...

Bob Segar's pretty much the best in the biz...

  • its hard to say this is my favorit, all bobs songs are my ...dream

  • There's no song quite like this masterpiece. So beautiful and smooth. This is in my top 5 Seger tunes for sure, probably in my top 20 all-time favorites. Killer electric guitar riffs by Drew and accordion by who-knows. I could listen to this song all damn day long. Seger rules.

  • @nychro7 This is just so brilliant , so many memorys !!

  • @nychro7 I love this tune , it brings so many good memorys !! Like most of Bobs tunes . Probably coz thats what ive spent 30 yrs of 44yrs listeneng too i spose !! lol .. Brilliant

  • I always thought this song was metaphor for something deeper than a shipwreck. I sometimes think it's of the survivor of a bad relationship or bad family situation. But I could be over-reaching.

  • @DanilaMc Actually, I think you could be right. That's the great thing about Bob Seger's songs.... they hold any number of meanings. This song is a great piece of Seger's abstract/existentialist lyrical style. You can interpret his songs in so many ways. That's one reason he's my favorite. I'm sure that Bob himself would respect your take on "Ship of Fools."

  • @nychro7: This is a great song, nychro, but I think it was done with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, not with Seger's road band. That's Pete Carr or maybe Jimmy Johnson on guitar; Carr typically did flashier lead stuff, JJ the rhythmic supporting stuff. With Barry Beckett on keys, David Hood on bass, Roger Hawkins on drums plus others. This song has always been one of my favs from Seger.

  • @GeorgiaBoy1961 Sorry for the late reply. I could have sworn it says Drew did the guitar licks on the inner sleeve of the album. No doubt the MS Rhythm Section was stellar, though, and could just as well have done it.

  • @nychro7: You could be right, too, I haven't looked at the album jacket in a long time. Drew was a killer of a player, no question - under-rated too.

  • @nychro7 I definitely agree with you. I actually did listen to this song all damn day once when I was on vacation in Cocoa Beach. The girl I met there was shooting pool with me at a small pub on the beach and we took turns playing this song on the jukebox. Classic.

  • It's A Clasic, that so many have never heard.. Beautiful, Classy and So sad...

BUT.. Its not all about the sinking or the Ship or Water, It's about What could have been in a Beautiful relationship, That Really Could have worked, If we talked abou it.. Think about it..... Beautiful ! It's the sinking of a Beautiful relationship.. And Nobody would Listen.. and it sank!

    Think about it..!!!

    Len xo

  • Holy shit:From 1:19 -129,Thats the mackinaw bridge.Thats where Im From.LOL,so cool.Thanks again.

  • Wow thx.Haven't herd this,DAM cant remember.THANKS 4 posting.

  • Does anybody know where I can find the guitar tabs/chords for this song? I've looked all over and can only find the lyrics. I've tried it in a couple different keys and it sounds OK, but its not what Bob plays.

  • the verse goes A# F Cm D# A#

and the chorus goes Gm Cm F and then Gm Cm F D# and goes back to the verse

  • Comment removed

  • @SkateForFun348 Is it alternate tuning? It didn't sound quite right when I played it. thanks

  • i had to find the chords myself but with me, it works

i don't know, maybe you should use a capo

my guitar doesn't have a alternate tuning.

    good luck.

  • @SkateForFun348 cool, thanks. If I find out anything different I'll post

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • I wish he would put out something new and maybe start touring again.I would like to see him live!! Its like he just dissappeared!!

  • He had throat cancer. can't sing anymore. very sad.

  • @janama12 This isn't true it was just a rumor.

  • @janama12 Whatever he had, he certainly took some serious time off but sounded really great in 2007 when I saw him at the Forum in LA.

  • Just an amazing song....unlike any other Seger ever made. You'd think he spent his life on the seas before he made this song. It doesn't surprise me that Seger is actually an accomplished sailor. I love it.

  • This is awesome!! Fell in love with this song way back when in the late 70's.....brought back great memories...

  • i would love to have that tall ship at the first of the video

  • This is great! Thanks for posting. This is my favorite Seger song. I just decided to search(again) and see if his stuff is available for download yet, when I found this. Can't believe I have to spend $12 for the CD for this song. I bought the LP's back in the day and have the Greatest Hit's CD, which doesn't have this song.

  • I have to agree with "FRERNANDO", the picture of a bridge is not rellivannt to the context. Furthermore, though I love this song, Bob Seger knows nothing of "real" Navy life.. The loss of a shipmate, much less being the sole surviver, is nothing to brag about

  • This song is so nuts.

  • Bob at his BEST !

  • great song.... thanks for posting it one of my favorite bob seger songs...

  • Thanks. Just wondering why the picture of a bridge appeared when the lyrics refer to the ship`s bridge. It means the command deck which is called BRIDGE. The rest is all great.

  • Oh Lord this is good. Thank you so much!

  • Seems I'm not alone - my fav too, yet so many people don't know it. Can't even find the chords on the big online archives. Any one know?

  • i just into this song after 30 years !!!!

  • Oh its Popeye XD

  • that has got to be the coolest picture of an old sailor I've ever seen!

  • OMG somebody actually got this on here, i've been wanting to hear this for awhile thanks friend...

  • one of Seger's best!!! thanx for the memories

  • All the Seger songs that I have enjoyed seem to relay a clear story or experience relating to life, but "Ship of Fools" is unclear to me as to his meaning. Wondering if this was written metaphorically about something else, does anywone out there know ? Does it have to do with a ship at all? Would love to hear from someone else on this song.

  • I think that this song speaks for itsself. Many ships went down over the Great Lakes. Itcould be about anyone of them. It could also be speaking about all of them.

  • my dad keeps on telling me to put this on

i probelly did 815 of these views

  • sweet song.. one of my favorite seger songs of all time... thankyou for the song..

  • excellent song!!!!

  • It was a popular song in its day. I commercialed fished most of my adult live and this was our anathem. Long live Bob and thanks for posting....

  • I've posted before but what the hell! everyone i play this to love this siong nice one again and again thanks for uploading.

  • This doesn't sound like Robert Plant's Ship of Fools.

  • love the guitar in this..! great song..!reminds me of my last workplace, and co-workers..!

  • lol Nobody...did you work for Delta Air Lines???????

  • Thank you ! One of my favorite songs.

  • I don't know why this wasn't more popular than it was. It's a great song. Thanks!!!

  • Schoenes Lied.

  • One of my favorite songs!

  • Thank you so much for posting this, all of of us my close family love this song, this will definately become a big fave!

  • thank you for posting this. I always loved ythis song its a little more acoustic but the Lyrics are awesome! Great song for me a Naval Vet.

  • Thanks for the comments. One of my favorite songs from Bob.

  • @frankc5322 Still Lovein it.... a little rockin 40 yr old.

  • The Captain strolled a different kind of bridge than the one pictured. Besides that,

    it's a good video.

  • Your right about the bridge. Thanks for the comments.

  • @fandust1 bridge is the control of the ship

  • What is this song really about? Is it based on fact or fiction?
