mine was doing it when starting a game or a blue ray disc. due to old surround receiver I was using the optical audio output for sound, and the HDMI direct to tv for picture only. The PS3 was not happy with all the high-end output - ended up up unplugging my optical cable from the PS3 and life has been happy since!
damn, I have never seen anything like that before. Try using the composite cable to see if its the TV or the HDMI cable. I suspect the HDMI cable is a bit screwed though.
hey man a bit of advice if u use hdmi make sure it put in correctly and not slightly hangin out also make sure all av cables are in correctly(red white yellow) cables

In the end Sony or repair shops hadn't a clue what the problem was and both were asking for over £120 to fix it, so now I have a new slim ps3

Ive just had exactly the same problem .. turned out to be a faulty OPTICAL CABLE hope this helps

i haven't got a hdmi cable but if you can put it to lower resolution it might work
i am really not sure if that is possible maybe you know more
