They use the diesels for breaking, plus elect power in the coaches.pepole just wont beleive it, but the steamer could pull the balls out of any deisel any day.
Beautiful sight, But why on gods earth are there diesels invoved in any excursion? why can't people leave a steam train to do it's job? like in the old days, either one or more engines would have been enough.
Yeah, that kind of puzzles me as well. One of the most powerful steam locomovties ever built plus two diesels seems like overkill for a train of nine passenger cars!
2-6-6-6 - Virginian, right? The one with the enormous firebox/grate? Nice engine. DM&IR Yellowstone's were nice too. Nice one in 2 Harbors, MN. Wish more of these big babies ran. $, time, I guess. I'd heard there was a nice Big Boy at the Pomona Fairgrounds in CA. Somebody cut the piston rods on it I'd heard, to move it apparently. What a waste.
Man what an awesome locomotive she is. Its a shame the eastern roads that have operable steam are not as interested in using it like the UP is. Thanks!

I don't understand. The Challenger is a super powerful steam loco. Why are there diesels behind it helping?

Oh, scratch that. Already answered by someone else. The Challenger is just a kickass engine.

Pretty fast don't you think?!

The diesel power(hotel power) is required by the rules of the rail. Also it's used for powering the cars with electicity & hot water.

Cool. I live in Redding about 30 minutes north.

I always like Red Bluff for trains. Very good! Try to get hooker creek road and Hwy. 36 too. I like it!

Close, it is a Allegheny. They were bought by the Virginian and C&O railway.
Cut the piston rods? That is a waste...

This is a challenger 4-6-6-4. Built for UP in 1943.

I know that (I've seen it up close). I was just replying to apeppink's comment. The 2-6-6-6's weren't referred to as Virginians, but Alleghenies.

I had about a 30 minute warning the locomotive was passing thru town, it was a real treat to see her steaming down the tracks.

I'd like to see a 2-6-6-6 Come through the east. Bigger than this and the BIG BOY. In salcageable condition in BALTIMORE.
