Have you watched the film enough to hear the speeches by the girl who plays his sister, explaining that (similar phrasing) "it became ever clearer that there was something else driving him"? Burning his money was clearly symbolic for himself, as was dumping his car - leaving behind the last of his previous identity.

His journey did mean nothing to other people, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good one.

All the fasinating people he met throughout his journey.

What exactly did he learn?

Into the Wild is about a man that disliked societial control and Avatar is a fictional film, whereas Into the Wild ia based on true story.
