This was a good game that had a good ring/magic creation system, a good story line, and the graphics were okay for Ps2 games at the time. I would not personally mind a sequel which explains what happens to the Eternal child once he leaves with the main character.

I love this game. The ring creation system is addictive, the dungeon crawling is fun, and the music is incredibly haunting. It's not perfect, but I think if you give it a chance, it'll leave an impression on you.

@schtolteheim I enjoyed it. KF is better, but ER is still a good dungeon crawl if you're a fan of KF. The biggest complaint people had against the game was "It's slow!" It's the same complaint they wage against the KF series. The controls do take getting used to because the lack of analog stick control, but if you like the KF series, then this should be up your alley.

I've got this game, but I distinctly remember not liking it. But the last time I played it was about 10 years ago. Mayhaps I should give it another go.
The Controls are horrible in this game though, its still fun, I only ever got to the Volcano part and gave up, I was young. the only reason I bought the game was because it said on the back "Fantasy don't have to be Final" :D

@MrILOVEBEINGPURPLE It's actually a branch off of sorts to the KF series. You should be able to find it online for cheap, or any game store that's dumping it's PS2 inventory like a gamestop or something. The game got horrible reviews and a lot of people hate it (like they do the KF series), so it should be dirt cheap if you find it.

Yeah, given the content and context of many of the comments on this page, I'm not gonna have a popular opinion about this game, but I had a slightly more pleasant root canal as the novocain was wearing off.
Shaq Fu, the Hydlide series, Deadly Towers, and Bebe's Kids* were almost as bad.

Not quite, but the King's Feild series (and Eternal Ring which is an offshoot of KF) definitely has the feel of the oldschool PC dungeon crawls to it.
I have this game and I adore it. I found most of the game challenging enough to keep me into it but easy enough to not make me annoyed. The music was breathtaking. The mostly-open-ended gameplay was fun too. 10/10 in my opinion.

It was a launch game, so it's not exactly a good showpiece of the PS2's capabilities. It wasn't until the second generation of games coming to the system that we really got to see what the system was capable of.
Most launch games had bad graphics due to how difficult it was to program for the ps2 at first. Eventually Games got better. From software, the developers of this game, eventually made games with much better graphics like the King's field 4, the armored core series etc....
Shadow Tower Abyss from From Software had incredible graphics for the ps2. Sadly it was only released in japan. It is a first person rpg like eternal ring but much more darker and atmospheric. Slight horror too.

These graphics may be first gen PS2, and may look really old, but they'd have to be about twenty times blurrier, and fifty times foggier in order for it to look like an N64 game.
They're really not the same thing. Oblivion is an open world first person RPG whereas ER is a dungeon base FPRPG. They're two completely different games doing two completely different things.
Aside form them being first person RPGs, they're really not that comparable, because they're doing different things.
Quake II, and Unreal Tournament on the DC look better, and I'm sure I could find a few more as well. However, graphics don't matter for me (if they did, I wouldn't be playing PS2 games still).
Didn't know about this game at all, but it sure looks interesting as an old school, first person RPG. Haven't played the King's Field games much but am currently enjoying the hell out of From's PS3 epic Demon's Souls. Will probably check out ER at some point as well...

The Controls are horrible in this game though, its still fun, I only ever got to the Volcano part and gave up, I was young. the only reason I bought the game was because it said on the back "Fantasy don't have to be Final" :D

@MrILOVEBEINGPURPLE It's actually a branch off of sorts to the KF series. You should be able to find it online for cheap, or any game store that's dumping it's PS2 inventory like a gamestop or something. The game got horrible reviews and a lot of people hate it (like they do the KF series), so it should be dirt cheap if you find it.

I love that some of the first ps2 games look like Dreamcast games...I love the dreamcast. :) And luckily for me...a lot of these "underrated gem"'s you have posted up I own...:) I'm not one to simply follow the "popular" games. :)

i remember this game, i didnt get very far because i was only young. i remember on the 1st level right at the begining, and you turn around and go out of the cave, these turtles start attacking you and every time you hit them, they take cover in their shells :S

Yeah, given the content and context of many of the comments on this page, I'm not gonna have a popular opinion about this game, but I had a slightly more pleasant root canal as the novocain was wearing off.
Shaq Fu, the Hydlide series, Deadly Towers, and Bebe's Kids* were almost as bad.
*-Ok, maybe Eternal Ring isn't THAT bad.

Not quite, but the King's Feild series (and Eternal Ring which is an offshoot of KF) definitely has the feel of the oldschool PC dungeon crawls to it.

And I still like the simplistic nature to the visuals. They didn't exceed their focus when they designed it.

I have this game and I adore it. I found most of the game challenging enough to keep me into it but easy enough to not make me annoyed. The music was breathtaking. The mostly-open-ended gameplay was fun too. 10/10 in my opinion.

I didn't really enjoyed it that much, I DID play trying to find ALL rings and secrets (I got that eternal sword) Anywho, but the music. Just...beautiful!! I LOVED THE MUSIC!

It was a launch game, so it's not exactly a good showpiece of the PS2's capabilities. It wasn't until the second generation of games coming to the system that we really got to see what the system was capable of.

Most launch games had bad graphics due to how difficult it was to program for the ps2 at first. Eventually Games got better. From software, the developers of this game, eventually made games with much better graphics like the King's field 4, the armored core series etc....
Shadow Tower Abyss from From Software had incredible graphics for the ps2. Sadly it was only released in japan. It is a first person rpg like eternal ring but much more darker and atmospheric. Slight horror too.

Not even close.
They're two completely different games that share little in common aside from the fact that they are first person RPGs.
Oblivion is an open game with a massive world, whereas Eternal ring is strictly a dungeon crawler. It's world is limited to dungeons.
They're similar, but different.

These graphics may be first gen PS2, and may look really old, but they'd have to be about twenty times blurrier, and fifty times foggier in order for it to look like an N64 game.

I find it enjoyable, but not every gamer will. Some people absolutely hate this game.
My best advice is buy it for cheap that way if it's not your thing, then you don't feel as bad if you hate it.
Just don;t expect the greatest game ever when you come into it, and you won't be disappointed.
Also, there is no analog support, so you have to control with the D-pad and shoulder buttons.

This game's perfectly playable, and perfectly engrossing. I probably own more games than you've played.
The only really downside to the game is the lack of analog control, but I've played a lot worse in my 20 plus years of gaming.
This is hardly a terrible game. I've played a lot more broken and unplayable games than this in my time.

They're really not the same thing. Oblivion is an open world first person RPG whereas ER is a dungeon base FPRPG. They're two completely different games doing two completely different things.
Aside form them being first person RPGs, they're really not that comparable, because they're doing different things.

I can't stand this game, I tried playing it again the other day, got the Sea Blue Key thing and get bored.
It's a decent game though, and I played it a lot when I first got my PS2.
It is very underrated, although Graphically I thought it wasn't THAT bad, what DC games look better if I may ask?

Quake II, and Unreal Tournament on the DC look better, and I'm sure I could find a few more as well. However, graphics don't matter for me (if they did, I wouldn't be playing PS2 games still).
I enjoy the game for it's gameplay.

Didn't know about this game at all, but it sure looks interesting as an old school, first person RPG. Haven't played the King's Field games much but am currently enjoying the hell out of From's PS3 epic Demon's Souls. Will probably check out ER at some point as well...

My favorite game so far! Ive gotten up to lvl 99, found the eternal sword, everything. Has the best storyline ive seen so far, but yeah... it lacks some things. but, very good for a 2000 debut game. Bout damn time someone posted a decent gameplay video. How did you record it? I'd love to know.
