There is of course a risk to any race after all we do chariot races and events like that. And yes horses can get hurt on those, but there is a severe difference between running on a flat surface covered with dirt/sand and trying to do the same thing down a steep slope. I'm all for rodeos and I know people train their horses all year round, but you can't train a horse to have a physically different body to take that jarring going down the hill at a gallop.

As for the horses being alright because they are hurt in the first race... I don't know any cowboys where I live that will willingly risk hurting their horses. I'm not a city slicker. The horses go through vet checks before and after and they have practice all weekand mostly all year.. I help the owners with their horses that go down it and the love they have for the horse is unbelivable! between the horse and owner even the rider. Not only that but these horses and riders are required to pass many qualifying runs to make sure the horse is mentally sound & healthy (not drugged) before they are allowed to race. The horse is in their right mind and and how about you try to make a 1500 lbs animal do something it doesnt want to do?

It's not the size that's important. It's who can do more damage to who. Unarmed and face-to-face, the horse would beat a man hands-down. But when it's an unarmed horse VS a man wielding spurs, reins and a whip who is firmly perched on the horse's back... Man wins.
Animals have personalities; right? Just like humans, dogs, and cats, horses also have personalities. But some of our pets are easy going, shy, outgoing, and adrenaline junkies. These horse owners would not place a horse in this race unless it was the type of horse who loved the adrenaline of the sport. After all if the horses heart and soul is not in it, they would not win the race and there is a high chance that both horse and rider would get hurt. No horse owner or jockey wants that!

I was raised on a ranch and I go to the UW school of nursing. I feel that to love animals and be educated means looking at all sides of an event involving animals to be sure it is necessary, safe and good for the relationship between man and animals. Rodeo is all about honoring traditions and remembering how animals have helped us move forward in time.
Riders have access to the hill all year and walk/run the hill with their horses. They often lead them down, ride them down, and practice with other friends and horses. The horses know exactly what is coming for the nights of the races and have safely done it before. Any injury or death is not normal or to be expected. It is just as shocking and sad as animal and human deaths elsewhere.
The care and training given these horses is phenominal and they are loved by their owners. A man does not decide to run his horse down a steep hill. These men put months and years of training into their horses. They start with small hills, swim their horses every day and build strength and endurance so that they make the most safe and efficient team to go down the suicide hill. There are practice runs every Thursday for two months before the big weekend of races.
This race is done once a year with a rare death. Horses die more in track racing than running down this hill and across a river. The horse WILL NOT go down the hill if it does not want to. So go find something else to bitch about!!
People will jump on any bandwagon on youtube it seems. There have been approximately 20 horses put down in the last 23 years or so. While this number may seem substantial when compared to regular horse racing this number is tiny.
According to the NY Times more than 3000 horses have been put down or died in track racing in the past 5 years alone.
Too bad they dont show the qualifying procedures or the hundreds of safe races in these videos.
So you all seem to think it's not ok for the riders to make a decision for the horse, but really you just want to make a different decision for the horse. We can't tell it what to do, but you can tell it what not to do. It's real easy to say we don't need to use animals in this industrialized society we live in today, you might have made different decisions for the horses 200 years ago...

Dear kelliefan1017, To begin with it is "they're not forced"NOT "there not forced". Secondly, the riders, not the horses, have to sign a release am I correct? The riders know that this is dangerous, may cause serious injury or maybe even death. The animals that are under their care don't expect the person that takes care of them to put them into possible danger. On their own accord, the horses more than likely would refuse that steep of an incline. It is abuse and should be banned.

You can't really force a horse to do something, if yo have ever tried to load an unwilling horse into a horse trailer or coral you would know what I mean. The horses are indeed caused to race down the hill, but they are willing to do so as horses develop quite a bond to their riders and learn to trust them. Also the death toll is really not that high, according to a statistic a an anti-suicide race website by PAWS there has been 13 deaths (horses) in the last 18 years, small percentage really.

Ive been riding for over 5 years. They are not built for this. Having all their weight forced onto their front legs at speed, I really doubt that does any good to their bones, even someone who doesnt know about horses would think that. I said guessing by the way they talked that they beat their horses. What has that got to do with the horse not listening anyway? Most horses will still listen when being ridden, especially when going down a hill that steep with a rider whipping them.
First off they arent putting all of there weight on there front end. If they were they would be standing on there front ends. They use there hind end alot in this race. And jumping is just as hard on there legs!

Ok if you think these horses are forced and all. Well I believe that these horses would go down the hill by them selves just as fast! You really should go to this race and go watch it from the top of the hill and see the horses and how they act. Because you will think differently about them being "forced".
It's easy to test your idea: get off the horses on the top of the hill, see what happens. It takes a rider directing them down for them to go down it like that in a group. Well, that or an immediate threat.

No I know its not cruel. And horses go down hills steeper hills than this in the wild. And horses do fall but they dont always break a leg. And there has only been a couple of horses that had to be put down due to a broken limb.

But horse racing also has a great many more competitors - they don't have the extremely high competitor-to-death ratio that this race has. Also, racing and eventing are both actively looking into ways to make things safer and reduce the number of deaths. Are people doing the same for this race? And sorry, but I hate it when someone justifies something the way you did. Whether horses die in racing/eventing or not, deaths elsewhere do not justify the deaths in this race.
Did I miss it? I didn't see any horses fall in this video, not the actual race. Really interesting, it makes me wonder if all of the footage that gets pandered around about the suicide race is the worst that could be found. Seriously, I was expecting a horrible free for all, but that's not what I saw here at the end.
This is an awful race. It should be illegal. People die, horses die, and so many other things. Look at the horses' backsides. They are foaming, they are being whipped to hard and too much. This is awful.

There is of course a risk to any race after all we do chariot races and events like that. And yes horses can get hurt on those, but there is a severe difference between running on a flat surface covered with dirt/sand and trying to do the same thing down a steep slope. I'm all for rodeos and I know people train their horses all year round, but you can't train a horse to have a physically different body to take that jarring going down the hill at a gallop.

The horses go through vet checks before and after and they have practice all weekand mostly all year.. I help the owners with their horses that go down it and the love they have for the horse is unbelivable! between the horse and owner even the rider. Not only that but these horses and riders are required to pass many qualifying runs to make sure the horse is mentally sound & healthy (not drugged) before they are allowed to race. Animals have personalities; right? Just like humans, dogs, and cats, horses also have personalities. But some of our pets are easy going, shy, outgoing, and adrenaline junkies. These horse owners would not place a horse in this race unless it was the type of horse who loved the adrenaline of the sport. After all if the horses heart and soul is not in it, they would not win the race and there is a high chance that both horse and rider would get hurt. No horse owner or jockey wants that!

I was raised on a ranch and I go to the UW school of nursing. I feel that to love animals and be educated means looking at all sides of an event involving animals to be sure it is necessary, safe and good for the relationship between man and animals. Rodeo is all about honoring traditions and remembering how animals have helped us move forward in time.

Riders have access to the hill all year and walk/run the hill with their horses. They often lead them down, ride them down, and practice with other friends and horses. The horses know exactly what is coming for the nights of the races and have safely done it before. Any injury or death is not normal or to be expected. It is just as shocking and sad as animal and human deaths elsewhere.

The care and training given these horses is phenominal and they are loved by their owners. A man does not decide to run his horse down a steep hill. These men put months and years of training into their horses. They start with small hills, swim their horses every day and build strength and endurance so that they make the most safe and efficient team to go down the suicide hill. There are practice runs every Thursday for two months before the big weekend of races.

People will jump on any bandwagon on youtube it seems. There have been approximately 20 horses put down in the last 23 years or so. While this number may seem substantial when compared to regular horse racing this number is tiny.
According to the NY Times more than 3000 horses have been put down or died in track racing in the past 5 years alone.
Too bad they dont show the qualifying procedures or the hundreds of safe races in these videos.

The riders know that this is dangerous, may cause serious injury or maybe even death. The animals that are under their care don't expect the person that takes care of them to put them into possible danger. On their own accord, the horses more than likely would refuse that steep of an incline. It is abuse and should be banned.

You can't really force a horse to do something, if yo have ever tried to load an unwilling horse into a horse trailer or coral you would know what I mean. The horses are indeed caused to race down the hill, but they are willing to do so as horses develop quite a bond to their riders and learn to trust them. Also the death toll is really not that high, according to a statistic a an anti-suicide race website by PAWS there has been 13 deaths (horses) in the last 18 years, small percentage really.

Clearly, you do not understand how bad a horse's vision is. By the time they actually see the hill, they are already either running down it or flipping head over heels. Also, if I were to beat the crap of you until you ran down the hill while I was on your back, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to stop either. Forcing horses down a hill at a speed amongst other horses when they are not made for that. And Im guessing a lot of these horses get beaten, seeing as the people that come here to defend it and watch it/ are involved in it, talk like retarded rednecks that swear and seem very aggressive.

They are not forcing the horse to do anything! And why do you suggest that? Just because they swear? I swear and have a very bad temper but I dont beat on my horses. We own horses that have obviously been abused and thumped on and I am taking the time and slowly getting them to trust me. And ya maybe some of the guys may seem aggressive but there guys. And I know most of these guys and they are really nice people.

I am not sure if you have ever seen a horse in real life but I have been raised on a ranch breeding and training horses. They ARE built to cover terrain quickly, efficiently, & safley. Go find a local stable and ride one for a few times. You will find your statement to be completly false. oh, and rednecks down beat their horses. If they did, they would have a horse that didnt listen to them and what is the use of that to them?

Ive been riding for over 5 years. They are not built for this. Having all their weight forced onto their front legs at speed, I really doubt that does any good to their bones, even someone who doesnt know about horses would think that. I said guessing by the way they talked that they beat their horses. What has that got to do with the horse not listening anyway? Most horses will still listen when being ridden, especially when going down a hill that steep with a rider whipping them.

You really should go to this race and go watch it from the top of the hill and see the horses and how they act. Because you will think differently about them being "forced".

It's easy to test your idea: get off the horses on the top of the hill, see what happens. It takes a rider directing them down for them to go down it like that in a group. Well, that or an immediate threat.

No I know its not cruel. And horses go down hills steeper hills than this in the wild. And horses do fall but they dont always break a leg. And there has only been a couple of horses that had to be put down due to a broken limb.

Because 20 horses have died in the past 24 races. That's not including those who are euthanized later due to permanent injury. But horse racing also has a great many more competitors - they don't have the extremely high competitor-to-death ratio that this race has. Also, racing and eventing are both actively looking into ways to make things safer and reduce the number of deaths. Are people doing the same for this race? And sorry, but I hate it when someone justifies something the way you did. Whether horses die in racing/eventing or not, deaths elsewhere do not justify the deaths in this race.
