How do you know how much polyfill to put in? I assume it does not do much in increasing case pressure, so do you just fill one up, then take it out and weight it and use that weight for the rest? Thanks.
@ELITEHAMSTER123 I fill the case with the charge...fill the rest of the space with Poly Fil then weigh both powder and filler on a scale then calculate the amount needed. I add the poly fil weight to the projectile weight when calculating a lod as well.
hi I am new reloading do you have charge for lee 180gr in .308 I see the oders videos using red dot and blue dot but I have 8lbs of green dot my book have only data for 175 cast bullet 13 grains do I have use it poly-fil with 13grains of green dot ? last video you din't use poly-fil on red dot and blu dot thank you I like see you videos
The trailboss does not fill my cases 80% . I would like to try the polyfill on my 30 30 win. I'm using a lee 160 grain lead bullet. What kind of powder should I use and how many grains. Thank you
Can I use poly fill on my 30 30 win loads and using imr trailboss powder? I use lead bullets . Tha imr manufacture said I can't compress trailboss. If I can't use this powder on polyfill, what kind do you recomend?
i use a 270 wby i had lee mak me a mold for it i use 110 gr bullits i use gas seals and i load it with IMR 4895 66grs their like 3600 fps iv used them for the past 3 yrs on deer and pigs ground hogs and lots of pop cans i havnt had any problems with itiv put 300 rounds thou it im cheap i trying to think of a way i can make bullit cases to realy save money
I have a 9.3x62... I love the 9.3mm cartridges and I also have a 9x57mm. Mountain Molds will custom make you one for about $100. You design it online and they build it. I have heard nothing but good things about them. Please visit our forum I'd love to see your rifle and range results.
Pistol powder and Rifle powder, would they make a difference? I have some Pistol Accurate powder #5 but I dont load pistol anymore and I wanted to load up rifle rounds. Would these pistol powder to the job? Im thinking about loading up 1/4 charge for .223 and 7.62x54r with the pistol. Would it do?
I don't have any specific loading data but I would think that using a cast bullet and only a cast bullet would work. If I were to use AA#5 I would try 6.0gr in the .223 and 8-9gr in the 7.62x54Rmm to start.
Im thinking of loading some subsonic bullets and Im not planning to load anything past 6gr. I've had success with 5.3grn but thats with copper bullet with A1680 powder for .223. I have to take a look at more cast bullets.
Good idea about the wadding, i know a bloke at the range that uses toilet paper in his reloaded .303 rounds, showers the range everytime he fires. my .308 is filled pretty much to the shoulder so i don't think i'd need wadding, what do you think?
I would avoid toilet paper. Paper is an abrasive matirial no matter how soft it may seem. I don't think you'll have to worry about polishing the rifling out of your barrel but just be aware that paper isn't the best. If you're loading a 80% plus density charge then a filler isn't needed. The .303 British is a fine caliber. What powders are available where you're at?
No, not in a handgun cartridge. You can, it won't hurt but you need to add the weight of the poly fil to the weight of the bullet and calculate if you exceeding maximum pressure.
Rifle cases are a special circumstance. They can have a huge capacity of 65+ grains and you're using perhaps 11-30gr of powder. The poly fil holds the charge against the primers flash hole for sure consistant ignition.
Not with the amount I am using. This is a load from the Lyman Manual itself. Pistol powders are great for a fast impuse of pressure to get a lead bullet going at a decent speed. This one was going about 1500f/s.
With that amount of powder you don't need Poly Fill. When using cast bullets there are occasions where you're using only between 9.0gr and 22gr depending on the bullet used. It's only when the charge is so small that you need to keep it pushed against the charge. I was using Green Dot and only about 16.0gr of it in a 30-06 using a 200gr bullet.

Does the poly-fil ever clog or obstruct the rifle?
bullandbullets 3 months ago
@bullandbullets Never once have I had a clog of poly fil.

in other words, the polyfil burns and affects pressure ? That's why you weigh it ?

Yes, Lyman has loads for this and so do we at our forum.

Come to the forum..we have a cast bullet thread. It's free. We have a lot of shooters with a lot of load data.

Trail Boss should fill the case fairly well. If it fills the case by 80% then you don't need to.

what happens to the polyfil after the firearm is fired? does it exit the barrel?
lexmark136 2 years ago
Yes...and it leaves no residue behind either.

I see your point. Though unless you're nearing max charge it seems to me consistency of loads would be the bigger concern.
Cosmoline 2 years ago
Why weigh the fill? I've never bothered, I just dip the same amount of grits for each load.
Cosmoline 2 years ago
The weight is added to the weight of the bullet for pressure management.

for tha pollyfil you should use a electric scale its faster and more accurate
thefreakjr1 2 years ago
Sure, but not everyone has an electric scale.

You can pick 1 up from most harware stores for under $10. worth it.

Did you ever shoot these through a chronograph?
I'm curious what kind of velocity 16 grains of Unique does with a 200 grain bullet in an '06 case.
I use the Lee 155-2R cast bullets in my SKS and the small case doesn't require poly fill.
Thanks for the videos. Very informative.
Oheeeoh 3 years ago
Not yet. I will chronograph them when the weather gets better and the sun position is better. I am estimating 1800f/s

do you know where i could get a mold for a 9.3mm..it's a great cartridge the 9.3x57mm...would be greatfull for any help.

Try 3.5gr of Bullseye with a 55gr cast bullet to start. Not very powerful but I still wouldn't want one to hit me.
