  • this shit makes me tear up everytime... i cant imagine a stronger feeling of love than a good relationship with a buddy

  • What else is life really about? He faced adversity and lived out his dream. Hope he's got more dreams to go for. Fantastic story.

  • 1/24/12 - 14 dislikes...who are these people?

  • Two words - amazing / inspirational !!!

  • What a beautiful soul. God Bless you and thank you for your service to our country.

    Tonya

  • What a wonderful and inspiring story. You can put your mind to anything and accomplish it if you have the will and determination.

  • Most excellent Mike..you are truly an inspiration..

  • I love you Mike.

    God bless you.

  • Doc Reeder! If you will allow for it....I would really like to send you some Combat Medals I had specially made for FMF Corpsmen. They are (golden) and not Matte Black as was in issue for Combat Army Medics. These were somehow passed over for us in the Navy, and truly bewildered, I had 50 of them made up to distribute myself. I can send you seven if you wish for your Corpsman Combat friends. Just give me an address, and hey you are looking good Doc. Stay with the golf!

  • Doc Mike Reeder........SIR...!...This is Doc Mike Ambra also a combat VET..! I hail from Fox Co. 2/9 FMF We moved through Operation Hickory and The Prarie Incursions @ the Zee......67&68. I was so moved by your dedication to life and of course your heavy sacrifices with the Marines. I`m humbled by your dedication to others. Please see my writing also of "Torment Of A Distant War". Please forgive the "whiney" dis-focus of it and remember my respect for your example. SEMPER FI

  • Mike, you really are an inspiration. As an "Old Marine 1953-56" I can begin to appreciate your devotion. Semper Fidelis, and anchors aweigh!

  • Thank you for such an emotional story Sir may God bless you you are truly an awesome American

  • hey doc mike, i never served but i love all the ones that have. thank all of them. i love your video!!!!!

  • Doc, your story brought a tear to my eye, a couple of times. Thank you sir for that wonderful story, for your courage, for your determination to see thru your best freinds dream, and for being the man you are.

Thank you for your service to this country, and please accept my "welcome home!"

    Bill Murtha, ICC(SS), USN Ret.

  • From one Corpsman to another - You are an example of the spirit and dedication of those who sacrificed that others might live.

    Thanks Doc.

    Steve Olson, HM1, USN

  • You better believe i will never complain about anything again. When i graduated from Howe Military School, all my class mates got a draft card on graduation day, i even got one giving me a citizenship and a scholarship, I was a Master Sargent; and if i accepted it where to be promoted to a Lieutenant, just like you see it in the movies; a young (18) inexperience, clean cut rookie leading a bunch of Momas boys to the horror that was Vietnam. Thank You Doc. Visit Venezuela will play some 3rdWGolf

  • God Bless this Guy and all of our vets

    JB Griffin c/o Griffin Golf

  • Wow Mike! From one golfing HM to another: BZ brother, you are a true inspiration. If you're ever in the Beaufort SC area look me up and we will play a round.

  • Thanks for your service and determination. I'm a songwriter, and like many others, many of my friends served in Viet Nam. A song I have written "Seemed Like War To Me" was written to honor those who served. Some came home in pieces both physically and mentally. It was years before I could sing it without breaking down. Your story is touching and inspiring. So glad you recovered and found happiness in your life. Bill

  • i dream of shooting in the 70's...ur the shit mike!

  • THANK YOU Mr. Reeder. You are a true inspiration to us all. God bless you sir!

  • A remarkable story indeed, however you have now become a "True" golfer. Not because you are in a wheelchair, not because you broke 80 around the "old course", not because you overcame adversity. You are a True Golfer simply because you buried your dead buddy on the 14th, but carried on and finished the round.

I wish you all the very best sir.

  • Very inspirational video....Can someone please give me the music playing at the background starting from 0.15 to 1.35 ....will highly appreciate the same thanks....

  • What great adversity you have faced....I am so happy that you were not able to make it out the window......what a loss. As a veteran of our Country I am proud to have heard your story. As for those who oppose your story of your friend, we have a choice to standby our friends and made the correct one. After all, he stood by you and your wife sounds like a truly remarkable woman. Don't let the negatives outweigh the positive!

  • Very moving. But don't talk to us of the pain of losing someone to lung cancer while smoking. It's hypocritical.

  • My grandpa smoked from age 13 to 83, total 70 years and died at age 89, not from cancer, and he smoked the cigarettes without filters many years too so don't judge.

  • THANKS MIKE FOR YOUR SERVICE TO AMERICA!! AND SHARING YOUR STORY. GOD BLESS!

  • And I complain about my game, I am embarrassed. The three dislikes are malcontents and jealous of Doc Mike. Thanks for your service Mike and glad you were able to keep your promise to your friend!

  • Thanks, Doc Mike.. Welcome home

  • that's awesome!

  • I complained I could not play because I was dizzy. I complained I could not play because it rained. I complained about everything but now I complain no more. Thank you Mike from a fellow VNV....

  • Welcome Home, Brother

  • Mike you are an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and emotion in this video. Touch me and my life. God Bless you!

  • Stop it at 14:15 - the difference between class on the right and no class on the left.

  • What a story! What courage! What a tribute to the human spirit!!! Truly an inspiration for anyone who has every questioned why things happen, what his/her purpose in life is, and may have ever considered giving up! NEVER give up ~~You ARE special & your life DOES HAVE meaning!!!

  • @Sovereign4Ever Truly inspiring, i,ll never complain about tough lies again.

  • I saw this on ESPN a few days ago, but was fortunate to have this sent to me from a friend that I play golf with on sundays. I am glad to see the unedited version, as it is even more breathtaking and inspirational as the one that aired on ESPN. This is a wonderful example of strength and friendship. It is stories like this that will help out people who feel like there is no up in life. Thank you for sharing your story, Doc Mike, it is truly amazing!

  • Your the man in my golf book Mike. Do us a favor and write a book, it feels good to cry once in a while, Love Ya man, God speed.

  • Very inspirational. Doc Mike, I am glad that you did not find the strength when you were at that window in the hospital. You are quite a man.

  • That was a touching clip! A saga of boundless human determination triumphing against all odds!Friendship born on the golf course and man's grit and fortitude to fulfill the promise in style! Really inspiring!

  • Hey Doc Mike, Inspirational story of passion, courage, and friendship. That you've made such a success of your life after the blow you were dealt. That you made such an endearing and enduring connection with your buddy Mike. That you fulfilled your dream of playing, or should I say, slaying St Andrews. Amazing stuff!!! You give new meaning to purpose for living and living your purpose. Wishing you and your family health and happiness and keep putting that big ball in that little hole,)

  • Hay Doc, I was a special forces scout dog handler taking point of patrols in Viet Nam 1967-68 mostly north Viet Nam. You are my hero. Semper Fi JR

  • ......and other people think they've had it tough.

  • Rock on Doc Mike!!!! I hope I can be half on the man that you are!!! God Bless You!!!

  • Mike, I was paralyzed in 1972 as a young airman in the USAF. After a year in a VA Hospital, I was able to walk out of the place with the aid of 2 canes. I found golf in 1980 and became addicted. I still play a couple times a week, but it is becoming harder and more painful, but I won't give up. I know where you are coming from buddy. God bless you and keep on swinging !!!

  • Yeah - wow.

  • Mike your an inspiration to me and my grandparents i salute to you with your braveness and courage to our country

  • This makes me proud to be a human being!!

  • Corpsman UP! Doc Mike, you did good! Semper Fidelis from an old Marine!

  • To all my golfers and non golfer friends......

  • Fantastic story, MIke you're the best man, keep the faith...

  • WOW!!!!

  • you 3 that disliked this. What exactly did you dislike golf, St. Andrews, Mike, war?

I suspect no one dislikes war more than Mike.

  • Yes, I saw this when it aired. I loved the story and that I had been to St. Andrew's to see it. :)

  • All I can say Mike, is you were put on this earth to show that there is good here. You are the GOOD of this country. God Bless you and your wife.

  • You are a true inspiration and lived to inspire us, to not give up, to have determination and follow your dreams & passions. You so deserved "your little moment" in Scotland. God Bless you. PS I also agree with one of the comments; "Stop smoking now!"

  • who are the three dicks that disliked this?

  • @abfitch02071978 I think the dislikes are people disliking shitty comments.

  • @abfitch02071978 I disliked it just for the hell of it.... so there!

    :}

  • @tobydlong well good for you Toby. Maybe one day when you or perhaps your kid dies I'll give that a thumbs up. Enjoy hell :)

  • Inspiring story but please for your friends sake stop smoking NOW

  • Thank you for sharing this wonderful story, Mike. I too was a Navy corpsman...out in '69. Thanks for letting us see the face of passion.

    Dave.

  • A beautifully told story of one man's love of country, deep love and honor for a friend and passion for golf. Truly inspirational in showing Mike's courage, determination and commitment. What an example for the rest of us.

  • There was also Douglas Bader of the RAF who lost both legs in a plane crash in the 1930's. He got himself a tin pair, learned to walk on them, flew Spitfires in the Battle of Britain becoming an ace and played golf to scratch. These guys have determination.

  • Mike, this was a very heart felt story, as a Navy Vietnam Vet myself, " Welcome Home Brother" !

  • Hi Mike Where were you Med-Evaced to? I was a Corspman at 1st Med when you were Hit. Who were you with? Is it possible I may have helped take care of you? Later Dave

  • Inspiring! Great guy and a true American hero.

  • The three dislikes must have been Jane Fonda, signing in three different times.

  • Take a sec to look at this!!

  • One truly inspirational story!

  • Thanks for sharing a wonderful story...sad but inspirational at the same time.

  • Hi Mike:

I was also a Corpsmen with the 3rd marine division in Vietnam. Was there in 67 and 68 was shot up and medivac back home, Naval Hospital Millington, Tn. I was truly touched by your video. I live in Brentwood now and play music with some local guys and girls. I hope someday maybe we'll cross paths. Thank you for your service to our country. I love golf too.

    don w

  • this is inspiring to all us moaners got to be positive

  • Beautiful story!

  • Mike: so truly inspirational to this Viet. vet [I-Corp, Ben Hua '69, flying "Spooky" AC47 gunships]. Your challenges remind one of the great book of Douglas Bader [Reach for the Sky], who as a double amputee overcame golf, and even became a WW2 RAF Spitfire decorated fighter pilot. God bless you & family.

  • Mike; This video touched me. Your story is inspiring in more ways than one. Your story has brought back a memory of going to St Andrews with my best freind, but he passed of cancer before we could go... I must go now with my son and daughter! If you ever come to Dallas I wouild be honered to have you play gofl with me and my freinds. contact me.

  • باسم الله ، ماشاالله

  • @mdakhakhny

    الله يحب أمريكا

  • I was more moved by this than anything I have seen on the internet. Mike, if you read this, my hat is off to you. If you ever come through the Winston-Salem, NC area and are looking for a game (with a schmuck) call me. My treat.

  • wow very touching & inspiring !!

  • Mike Reeder definitely is a hero, not just for his service to his country in Vietnam but for what he has been able to do with his life since then.

  • So few of we, the physically able, dare to fulfill our dream - That Mike Reeder, an honorable Vietnam vet, defied all the odds against him from the filth of Vietnam where he obviously gave the sacrifice of his legs, as well as, the innocence of his mind and heart was able to achieve the joy of golfing from his chair and on only his upper legs is a tribute to himself and all the survivors of the horror of war. Congratulations Mike, you have made your buddy proud.

  • The only boundaries the human spirit knows are those WE choose to put on it. Fortitude, perseverance, hope, faith can conquer all. Thank You for the joy you have brought to my life this moment.

  • Who the heck would dislike this???

  • The two dislikes must be gigantic A-Holes!

  • @1665Victor It's prob. Jane Fonda twice!!!

  • Congratulations Doc Mike-- you have been a true healer- for yourself- and done a wonderful thing for the friend you lost! Enjoy your golf- and the rest of your life.- Doc Jay

  • The type of fortitude that is encouraged by love and the type of courage seldom seen (or noted) in today's youth. Guts. That's what it's about. Love this guy!

  • What a triumph over a disablement. Guts, determination, a real winner.

  • what a hero
