You evolve from a Cell to a Space Empire, and your actions in stages affect your civilization's outcome (Religious, Economic, Military, etc.). The mushroom cloud at the end is the "Conclusion" achievement, which you get for taking over our home planet via ICBMs. You should check it out, it's a pretty awesome game.
