Thanks for the step by step practice advice. I can do this breakfall about half the time, and only on my good side. I'll try taking it step by step like in this video and see if I can improve.
One of my senpai told me that the softness of ukemi is not determined on how silent our ukemi is, but how relax we do it and how soft the impact caused when the body land on the mat.
those turning around breakfalls without having a nage to hold on to @0:40 are tough !
The other breakfall I like ( not a lot of folks can do well ) is from a high shihonage, and also the "kickout" from tenkan irimi nage. Nice job, and thanks for posting ! Douzo yoroshiku !
just a quick note to anyone commenting on how loud (hence not perfect) his ukemi is, make sure you take into account that the sound of the video is such that you can hear very loudly the sound of his foot sliding across the mats, it must be alot quieter in reality than on this video
his hand lands softly almost at the same time his opposite foot leaves the ground. This way of ukemi's very unfamiliar to me but it looks like an incredible tool to have at one's disposal. Many thanks for sharing this.
I was pretty smooth before my schedule kept me from Aikido. I did have one problem though, although I'm built thin I put all my excess weight around my waist so Ukemi hurts my 'love handles' until I get used to it. ;-P
The noise is definitely an indication of how well one does their Ukemi. Our instructors would roll nearly silently and you notice that you get quieter as you progress. Silence will come eventually. I was just getting quiet when I stopped my training.
Noise levels also depend on how heigh you are breakfalling from. One of our shodans is about 6ft 2/3 and i have been on the end of a Hiki-taoshi, with his arms almost fully extended and me literally above him at that height suddenly realising the mats were a LOT lower down than they should have been., so i was literally breakfalling from about 7ft, possibly higher. Now i Would LOVE to see Anybody breakfall completely silently from that height.
Interesting..I am thinking of joining a local dojo, but like many posters have judo in my blood...many hours slapping the mat...curious if I can unlearn at my advanced age.
I hope you don't take this the wrong way. Your ukemi looks good, but the way you return to your stance "appears" really lazy. I realize you trying to have a relaxed look. I just think you quit at the end.
These soft breakfalls look cool. I`d love to learn them too, but I have the judo falls ingrained in my system which means I alwas land with a great flat crash. Really hard to unlearn.
It's not so soft as it should be. You are not following the line of your body nor the gravity nor the nature of movement, it seems that you are doing it by heart. Don't slam your hand when you touch the floor, instead use it as a coushin.
lol My sensei saw me doing this during class and wanted to see it himself, throwing me, and being ready to catch my free hand if i had made the mistake to pass it near his face, but he ended up accepting this new ukemy, BECAUSE WE use SOME EXACTLY AS THe VIDEO: AIKIDO "NICE FALLING TECHNIQUE" you don't know when you are going to need an specific breakfall technique so I learn as many as i can. I bet this one is the most suitable when tori keeps holding your arm to make your feet hit the floor.
THis looks a bit semi dangerous. When he throws himself over her arm, he could pretty easily land with the shoulder first and cause some serious injury.
I need to disagree with you. There's virtualy NO chance i ever fall with my shoulder first, simply cause when i jump i keep the grip tight over her wrist and the rotation of my body plus the distance of my own arm make sure i'll never fall over my shoulder. The max that can happen is me fall flatted over my back and lose my air (I've done that before). But's not close enough to a major injury.
Any doubt, send me a message and i'll try to explain myself better :)

We never practiced ukemi like that in our dojo. Just forward and backward. Still I know how to fall from any position.

Would that be referring to the flip where you ukemi partially over Nage/Tori on the high Shihonage?
