Your video was very eloquent. I really enjoyed it. I really love the goth style and I used to dress "goth" and did the hair and the whole shabang. I still really love to wear black but ive started to wear colors and try different makeup etc. I still have the "mindset" i guess you would say. Im an artist and I love skulls and the human anatomy and "gross" scary things. I am fascinated by some things considered "dark" but I know no religion. Everyone is different. @fahkyooh We (members of the gothic community) generally wear whatever the heck we want because we like it. Not because it fits a certain style. We all, goth or not, have certain styles and tastes. Our clothing reflects those tastes. I'm goth, and my style varies from medieval influenced, to victorian, 80's punk, 70's, rivethead, steampunk, extremely business professional, fanciful fairy, to sky blue snoopy pajamas. Because I freakin like the stuff I buy. Not because it fits a style.

People dress the way they do because it makes them happy and they like it. I'm not goth at all but I respect them alot because they arent afraid to show who they are. Paganism is a blanket term, typically used to refer to non-Abrahamic, indigenous polytheistic religious traditions. Wicca would be considered one to most. :)
Some of the points you made are great examples of why I resisted the label "Goth" in high school. I knew what Goth REALLY was, and though I felt that was a great way to describe myself and my personal preferences, I refused to take the label in school because I didn't want to perpetuate the ignorance concerning Goth. Would you mind if I did a video response to this?

I'm a black woman, and at the moment, my hair is a reddish-brown-black color. I like a lot of metal, write dark fiction and poetry, play and sing in a prog-rock band, have my left nostril pierced, have double studded ears (I want to gauge them eventually), and am rocking green nail polish. Most black people consider me "gothic". I don't think I sound very "gothic" to me, do you, LeahMouse?
I once dated one of those teenagers who sit there in guyliner and mope while listening to Marilyn Manson. He'd spend hours going on about how depressed he was, but whenever anyone asked him why, he'd say, "because I'm goth. All goths are depressed, all the time", like he thought it was a rule. The worst part was that he was completely serious :|

I really like how you touch base on what goth isn't. People ask me if I'm goth all the time as well, however I do not consider myself goth. It is hard to explain to people about the mentality of a goth and what makes me different. The problem was I didn't know what they were thinking. You gave me insight and I thank you for that. I've definitely been this way since I was YOUNG... not once have I changed. Sure, my wardrobe consists of mostly black, and my room is dark... but so what... I'm more of a mind-set person. I definitely agree with most things you said. Ive been asked a million times if I was goth... and I just looked at those people and said call me whatever you want, and then I went about my business. I know who I am, and that's all that matters. And you're right, we are not depressed all the time.

I think the only problem of goth is that young kids who are psichological instable can relate goth to some bad behaviour and maybe their depression can led them near dark themes.
I'm black, i don't dress in chins and black clothing and whatnot, i don't always act dark and creepy, but i AM gothic. Alot of people think goths are devil worshipers, eat raw meat, and have sex with dead people. Not all gothic people. All the gothic people i run into are very nice, actually. Alot of people who just meet me, don't believe i'm gothic until they really get to know me and see how dark (outside, not my skin, lol) i really am. So yeah you can be goth on the inside and/or outside :D
I've always answered the "Are you goth? What is goth?" question with simply "It is a style connected to a subculture unfortunately connected with a lot of negative stereotypes."
After watching your video, I am rethinking my answer to something far more thought provoking and intuitive.

About Goths not being identifiable sometimes - true! You wouldn't necessarily point me out as Goth at work. My lip ring comes out (been there for over 6 years, it can come out for the day and not close up) on goes the smarter part of my wardrobe. My hair is red but not too bright. I probably dress a little differently from your average office worker but I'm still smart & presentable for clients. Was speaking to a colleague the other day who actually came out with - "Are you a Goth or something?"

@fahkyooh We (members of the gothic community) generally wear whatever the heck we want because we like it. Not because it fits a certain style. We all, goth or not, have certain styles and tastes. Our clothing reflects those tastes. I'm goth, and my style varies from medieval influenced, to victorian, 80's punk, 70's, rivethead, steampunk, extremely business professional, fanciful fairy, to sky blue snoopy pajamas. Because I freakin like the stuff I buy. Not because it fits a style.

I'm a black woman, and at the moment, my hair is a reddish-brown-black color. I like a lot of metal, write dark fiction and poetry, play and sing in a prog-rock band, have my left nostril pierced, have double studded ears (I want to gauge them eventually), and am rocking green nail polish. I've definitely been this way since I was YOUNG... not once have I changed. Sure, my wardrobe consists of mostly black, and my room is dark... but so what... I'm more of a mind-set person. I definitely agree with most things you said. Ive been asked a million times if I was goth... and I just looked at those people and said call me whatever you want, and then I went about my business. I'm black, i don't dress in chins and black clothing and whatnot, i don't always act dark and creepy, but i AM gothic. Alot of people think goths are devil worshipers, eat raw meat, and have sex with dead people. Not all gothic people. All the gothic people i run into are very nice, actually. Alot of people who just meet me, don't believe i'm gothic until they really get to know me and see how dark (outside, not my skin, lol) i really am. So yeah you can be goth on the inside and/or outside :D

About Goths not being identifiable sometimes - true! You wouldn't necessarily point me out as Goth at work. My lip ring comes out (been there for over 6 years, it can come out for the day and not close up) on goes the smarter part of my wardrobe. My hair is red but not too bright. I probably dress a little differently from your average office worker but I'm still smart & presentable for clients. Was speaking to a colleague the other day who actually came out with - "Are you a Goth or something?"

I've moved into a new home and think I'm not goth or w/e not that i said i was cus they said I'm more grunge cus i don't wear eyeliner most of the time but really i just wear what i want when i want and think how i want regardless if people think I'm goth or not lol

"There is no proof that I have seen that God ever existed" and many people have labeled me Devil Worshiper or Athsist. Only people from my church have done that though! People there have actually came up to me while there annd Asked what I thought I was doing there? Or told me that they all know that im a "fake" Even thought I have literally been going there my whole life. And Adults have called me Goth . But they think thats all it takes to be Goth which you just explained its not. *nextcomment

I admit i HATE colors and Im very pale and only wear dark colors so i know I make an entrance which I hate but accept it because Its just what humans do when they see someone different "they stare". And 1 more thing . I do question God like who created him? But i do go to Church and I listen and think about what they say. But. I absoulutely HATE labeling myself. But after watching your video. I realized. I am what I am and I have to except it. So would I be a poser by giving people the answer to there questions which is "Yes, I am Emo" ? Also, how can I keep people from getting the whole stereotype in there head? I have cut myself serveral times but I got help and I had my reasons. But i dont want them to think thats all i am. i dont want them like "Oh, theres Angela, She said shes Emo so, *next comment*

So. Lots of questions. Please answer them if possible? Okay. I have been asked tons off times if Im either Goth, Gothic, Emo, or Scene. I tell them I dont label myself because im afraid that they're going to take what I said and get one idea of what it is . Either I cut myself (Emo Stereotype) or I dont believe in God. Or something under those circumstances. But I am Emo. Meaning I am more Emotional than most people. I have that style. And I listen to Post-Hardcore, Rock, Emo-Core *nextcomment*
