Very well done! You should have been on the Burnin for Buddy sesions. Buddy would have loved to have had a drum battle with you in his prime. Of course he would have stolen the spotlight with his legendary intensity!
Matt, that was terrific, and you are a super talent and precocious for you age too. You hands are superlative. My friendly humble suggestion would be to now spend some time and playing even more relaxed, concerning yourself more with rhythm and swing, than with speed. Don't get me WRONG! I have the utmost respect for you, dude! Keep up the good work.
Matt Smith, that was the best Buddy tribute I ever heard. You should be doing Burnin for Buddy DVDs instead some of those other guys who even though great don't always get the concept. Very well done. I'm speechless.
I've been a drummer for 30 years now, played all over the U.S. and even a couple times in Canada but now after watching this kid, I'm too embarrassed to ever play again:(
So good it almost defies description. What a musician. Horizons are endless. Musical, in character, creative, intelligent, gee-whiz factor, command and control There just simply is no better---escept MAYBE Dylan Elyse in New Zealand. Astounding!
I agree that Dylan Elyse is a great teenage drummer who really puts on a show. But what got me interested in Matt Smith over a year ago was how he didn't go in for all the tricks. He once said that when he was 12, he did a stick throwing routine like Sonny Payne but when he turned 13, he said he had to outgrow it. I respected that, especially from a kid with his chops. Then when he won WFD people said it would ruin the image and he said to heck with those people. There was much there to respect.
2:10 is my favorite part. Amazing solo.

Wow! Stumbled upon this quite randomly, and WOW. Those mostly singles too, or you throw in some other rudiments?

Wow crazy solo :) Very good! I liked that you had a bit of beat and rythm and not just fast single strokes all the time! Well done.

Quite a vast difference from those who just play the notes (beats) and those who truly make music. You make music and drive the band !

Agreed on the suggestion. I find Matt delves into a very "march"-y style in his playing. Some nice stuff though.
