For the 2nd question make sure you warm your horses up before your run. Right when you get tacked up hop on and lope some large circles to exert some of his energy and he'll become less fresh. This will also help him realize what he's goig to do and if you have any issues with him while warming up you can fix that before the run. Also don't let your horse see the pattern until right when your running in to do it, otherwise he will become more exited cuz he thinks it's time to run.
NUMBER ONE!(: haha when your practicing (no matter what speed) stop him right before the barrel walk or trot around the barrel while lifting with your inside hand adn inside leg about half way arouind the barrel... if this does not work, instead of stoping him, at the last min. when he goes to dive turn him the opopisite direction!(: haha this should workkk,, and i subbeddd sub back?(:
Continued.....When you walk them through the pattern after you run through it, your letting them cool down and your always teaching them that just cause they see a barrel doesnt mean its always time to run. They have to learn to run when they are asked. With this, when you ask them to run they are more likely to give you more of themselves than if you ask them to run all the time. Hope all this helped! I train rodeo horses so if you ever have questions feel free to message me :)
2.) In doin lots of slow work that will help with his nerves at the gate and on the second barrel. His is wanting to turn before the second barrel cause he is getting to "Hot". When coming to the second barrel hold him with the outside hand and the inside leg to keep him from turning before the barrel and two to keep him off the second barrel. To help with the nerves at the gate, when ever you get done running a pattern at home, always go back and walk through it at least twice.
1.) In lookin and watching some of your runs, his biggest problem is he is havin a hard time gettin his rear end underneath of him. Do lots of slow work with him at the walk/jog. Walk/Jog him to the barrel then bring him to a halt & ask him to back a few steps, then let him go around barrel, holding your inside hand slightly higher to get him to pick up his shoulder. This will teach him that when he comes to a barrel he has to slow his rear end down to get under himself & to pick up his shoulder
Question 1 - Well what I suggest greatly is jogging around the barrel really wide, do this all the time for a while and then try a slow lope for a longer time and when its been a while and he/she gets used to transition you can go faster. My horse used to do that at the first barrel, they just get anxious and exited to run its perfectly normal :)
Question 2 - Well thats a really hard habit to break but I suggest a collected headset. Mail me =)
#1: when you are practicing, go thru the barrels just at a walk a couple times and make him do what hes supposed to do, then try it a trot... keep doing that until he shows improvement. my horse did the same thing at one time but i did that over and over again every single day and it worked.
#2: every typical horse does that, (but people shouldnt be in the alley way when you are about to run) but maybe try a different bit. and try your hardest to get him out in the arena and make him
Dont be afraid... it is AMAZING and soo much fun! i have had horses all my life and i love horses till the day i die! but dont be scared! you will fall in love just like i did... and if people say rude crap then dont listen to them, dont get discouraged... barrel racing IS MY PASSION! <33
ok so idk if this has already been said cuz i only read a few pages but someone said to tie him with a chain over his nose...DONT DO THAT!! thats a big no no! any horse you tie with a chain over his nose will freak the second it gets too tight and you may end up with a train wreak on your hands...it can possibly break several bones in your horses face and then you would more than likely have to put him down and hes way to pretty for that :)
then push 2 the 3rd barrel! then repeat, set up, check a little less than usual, then wide, then cut close...then run as hard as u can 4 home!!!..if he/she is still ducking the barrels after that trainging, than when ur setting him.her up and checking..pull the inside reign up. BUT NOT 2 HARD!!! becus if u pull 2 hard, u will decrease ur speed. but when ur checking up and setting up, pull the inside reign up and kick with the inside leg to push him/her away from thw barrel!
recap with the walking, then the trotin, then if he/she get it, great, if not. go back 2 a walk, then a trot. then let that be it for the day. if he/she does get it, try a slow canter. after he/ she gets that, then ur NOT done for the day. teach them to push off 2 the next barrel, or to the finish line!..after u fast canter up to the 1st barrel check, wide, then cut close, but dont knock it over,,then kick, kick, kick to the 2cd barrel! set up,check, wide, then cut close, but done knock, then push 2..
Like i said, this will take practice, and i will post a video as soon as the weather cooporates. when u r traing ur horse not to duck when truning or while ur setting him/her up, start at a walk. DO NOT!!!! I REPEAT, DO NOTT push him after barrels. do walking 1 day. the next time u work on barrels, recap, and then try a trot. if he/she do fine, great, if not. go back to a walk. let that be it for the day. then the next time u get a chance 2 work on barrels, recap with the...
I can answer # 1. i'm sorry this is l8 but, when ur turning horses for the barrels, u want 2 go wide and then cut is,kind of, so u go wide, and then come close to the barrel. the decreses ur time. u want to push him/her 2 the next barrel. and then check up a little bit and do the same thing...check, go make a wide turn, then cut in close to the barrel, then puch to the next barrel. repeat on all of the barrels, then come home.this will take...
Your horse seems to have an in between head set. so don't worry about a tie down unless he tosses it and rears and stuff. Do you use a hackamore or a bit ? I recommend using a Straight bit or a snaffle for racing.
When you go into the barrel, keep your shoulders up and straight, keep you head up, eyes straight ahead, and block out everything around you but your horse and that barrel ! you have tru potential ! ( :
Does your horse pick up his shoulder very well. That's very important is that at a full out run, they should listen to every cue. Maybe do some groundwork where you surprise him, or even on his back. Try running him past a barrel, if he wants to turn into it, turn him the other way and keep loping. Does he know leg signals? I guess I have to ask you some questions before I can give you answers because I don't exacually understand what he's doing. Could you let me know? Thanks!
When u go around your barrels u need to pick up on the rein u pull out when pull up u get him to bend that way he wont shoulder in and hot the barrel he will keep it round and be able to keep a forward motion for quick times
well what i do with my horses is to teach them the basics walking, turning, sprinting. Then i just start turning around a barrel till he gets familiar and contarble with it. then i start practizing the cuts or barrel exixt what ever you might call it. And I dont recomend bits for practicing. Practize makes perfect. Sorry if my English im hispanic and english is my second language. By the way nice palomino i personaly own a pure Doc Bar its a cutting breed.
He looks sooo good! amazing work with him , hes sooooo preaty, i have a special place in my heart becuase my first horse rocky is a pally :) hahah barrela are super fun! i suck, and dont have the right horse of place do do it but its fun :) i have a video of my follinf around with it haha. one thing i say was your not using alot of leg on ur turns, your focusing on speed, using your outside led will support him on the turns , it also looks like ur using alot of rein so working with leg will help
1st do alot of slow work and keep him listening to you,
2nd he is gate sour, ground work and slow work as well and not acually taking him through the pattern when you walk through there should do the trick!
ok hi... um i was watching and the thing is when you turn your barrel you dont look to the next one, um and going in the alley its not only him acting up... you are nervous and your horse feeds off your energy. you need to use a bit on this horse he is in need of one lol um but try slower work because you and your horse have to be comfterble with eachother and with the pattern tryst me it will help
I can answer the #2 question. I have had the same problems before! & it sucks.
Practice this before shows: When walking into the arena, Let him take 1 step, then stop him. 1 step. Stop. 1 Step. Stop. Until you're in the arena. If he takes more steps than you asked, back him up!-To undo the steps he took without you asking him to. Do this EVERY time you enter the arena at home.
Every time you exit the arena, back him out!! Never let him just walk out, because that will become his way to escape.
that barrels is just a job and its easy and fun they can relax... my mare had the same issue and it took tons of walking and trotting the pattern to get her to calm down and realize that its just barrels... they go in, run, and their done. Haven't had an issue with her since.
To fix ducking make sure he knows leg yields and moves off leg pressure. When you come up to the 2nd barrel (practice at a walk and trot before loping) take it very wide... he will make up the distance when speed is added. I've also seen people use cones or tires for markers so they know how far to stay away. If that doesn't work take him to the 2nd barrel and turn him hard the OPPOSITE way you normally turn to throw him off. As for the excitement, walk walk walk the pattern. When a horse knows
heyy girl make sure when u go out you look straight for your points around the barrel and slide your hand down and pull around the barrel and lean in and remember to never cross your hands
for #1 i would say.. check him before the barrel to an almost stop and practice that at home on the 2nd barrel
and #2i would try waalking in a circle of your first barrel so he has to listen to waat ur gonna do next
if this advice dont work im sorry lol it has worked on my horse but she had a problem with the end pole she would gust pull through the hack.. then a bit.. and now i check her and it seems to workk
This is just what i would do. I would walk your horse to the barrel, and stop him for a minute, then keep doing that at all 3 barrels and do it at a walk, trot, lope and gallop if u want.
For #2 when u practice before u do the pattern just make him stand in front of it without moving like standing still. And do it where ever u go so he gets used to standing still before he runs!:)
ok well for one the ducking before the barrel try to lift your horses head up and hold it that way he cant get it donw again. um and number 2 well its not that your horse wants out its because they know they have a job 2 do. so walk him around some and stroke his neck and talk 2 him. um i would suggest that you maybe try lifting straight up that way you get yor horse set up write. and try to sit as straight as possible that way ure horse dnt get knocked off balance.
My horse ducked on the first barrel every time I would do barrels. How I got him to stop was when he started to duck I would pull his head up high and make him back about 5 steps. Then start him over at the pattern and walk him through it.
The second question. Just walk him up and stop in side the arena until he calms and stands for 5 seconds then walk him out and do it again... its not that his nervous he just wants to get out of the arena as fast as he can to be around the other horses. And you shouldn't run a horse on grass. risk o injury if they slip or fall.
Well in this video(about a yr ago) I was using a hack, but since then I've been using a small snaffle bit and he seems to be doing a lot better with it.
1. my mare used to duck before barrels.. it was so annoying!! so what i did to fix this was lots of slow work. i'd walk the pattern and when i got to the barrel that my horse ducks at i lope a decent size circle around it a few times then come in tight and turn it.
2. ah the joys of crazy horses =] if your about to make a run RELAX..your horse can feel when your tense so make sure your not nervous becuz that can cause ur horse to become nervous too.
i have a question when i first stareted out with my horse who is very hotheaded as well she turned the barrels very sharp like it should be done then towards the end she wouldent turn them at all she would turn with a very very wide cut why is this?
my horse loves to be a brat in the ally as well. with her i just pet her and try to keep her calm....if your horse ever locks up dont force it to move...wait it out (ik annoying) and then allow it to move when it wants too...its ok alot of horses are just like tht....most dont deal with the problems but if you feel you want too.. just relax and your horse will too
hi, at state finals i was sitting 1st in the youth but then my horse ducked second and only second. the next run i looked straight up at the fence and used leg pressure and my reins and then once i knew he was going to turn i looked up to third.
i need to learn how to sit when my horse is on those really fast parts of each run to every barrel and the "homestrech". Please give me some advice. Do i just ride it out and that helps? I'm bouncing in the saddle alot and I hate doing it because it makes Penny uncomfortable. please help.
when your going between barrels sit in a 2 point becuz tht will take your weight off your horse and allow him/her to run faster and extend better...when your at the barrels sit down tht will signal your horse tht a change is about to occur..when you are on the homestretch a two point position is your best bet. .. just pick your body off the saddle and put your weight in the stirrups...oo and what type of horse do you have..my horse is named Penny as well. she is a morgan qh
the gate problems are really hard to work through when you are at a race with everyone around you trying to help, but really that just makes it worse for you and the horse. take a couple timed runs before or after your race and make him WALK through the gate over and over again and then procede to walk through the pattern. make sure you stay calm as well. i like to pet my horse on the neck as we get through the alley way it helps her stay calm and know that i am ready to go with her. msg me
for ur 1st question, if he is shoulderin the 2nd barrel then go back to slow work and trot him into it EXACTLY the way u want him to take it and really over exagerate the flex and the pocket... if he keeps shouldering another thing you can do is walk, trot, lope, or run him into the second and turn him the opposite way of the barrel and repeat that, he will learn eventually not to shoulder it. msg me if u need any more help at all :)
the attitude in the alley is VERY IMPORTANT! just try and reward him if he is calm and if u tense up it will just be worse...and if he starts doing stuff like rearing do a one rein stop and dont let him run! make him walk or trot if u have to but dont let him get away with that!...ur horse is gonna get it he just has to get it in his head
My horse had a probably ducking the first barrel (he is a leftly) What i did is figure 8 work between the first and second barrel. What you do is stop him at the pocket of each one and make him sit there then make him walk around it. and just keep doing that and it should help. Also about every 3rd time you do that add in the 3rd barrel. I hope that helps.
do there barrels or what ever speed event u r doin just dont always run your horse threw the shoot try walking them in then back out and soo fourth u might even try letting ur horse walk in and do a little circle before taking off ...... but great video : )
My horse used to duck on the second barrel also... What works for me is to look past the barrel not at it, then between the first and second makes sure you have both hands on the reins, not just one. Once he breaks the habit and picks up speed you can go from one hand to the other without using both.. but for now use two to guide him better.
i do mounted shooting and we had a horse that was rearing up so bad at the gate that he alsmot killed quintin, all we did was kept him out of the arena for a while and about 5 riders before we ran, walk around, get his head in the game and stand by the gate, also, make the arena a place your horse wants to go into. dont always run in the arena either, go in and just do slow work without barrels, hope that helps, nice lloking horse btw
if your horse is ducking in front of the barrel you need to keep working on pushing past, go back to slow work.
and second about the gate issue you really need to work over and over and over again when you arent running to go in and walk out and know that the arena isn't a bad place. if necessary make the arena the best place for the horse to be, that meaning make the horse a little unconfortable outside the gate
Its not hard to teach them to do it. Just start out slow intraducing them to the barrels at a walk. Then work ur speed up. Just keep running ur horse on the barrels and evenchally, u will just need to hold on and ur horse will know the pattern. :D
true, not trying to be rude, but the more you RUN the horse the more he will try and pull things like shouldering, if he is only doing one now he might graduate to doing it on the others as well.you have to help the horse learn along the way. :)
for the first Q. I would say when you are doing slow work make a bigger pocket and teach him to rate at the barrel, by stopping him and backing him up about 4 ft before the barrel. For the 2nd Q what helps me with that problem I turn my horse in circles so her mind is focused on me and not everything else.
If he is still ducking, slowly lope him around the barrel. Come in like you would and come out like you would. Keep doing it. Sporatically you will find him ducking. Pick up the rein and scoot his hind end around and make him lift himself up. It's going to take a few good rides circling him til he quits ducking. Good luck. Dj <3
He looks clean on all his turns, so I'm thinking it's a pain issue especially if he's still doing it. Let me know if it does turn out to be a pain issue. Dj <3
Well that's what I thought it was 2. So, I had a chiropractor look at him and he ended up finding that his back was in pretty bad shape. So we got that fixed and got his teeth fixed too, and WOW is he doing a lot better. He still ducks the barrel once n awhile tho.
Be sure you have a certified performance vet thoroughly check your horse. Sometimes horses will duck and or act up in the alley way because they fear the pain that's about to come from the turns and running. Also have a chiropractor check your horse also to make sure their not "out" somewhere on their body.
question 2:make sure you are calm .breath get a drink just relax before a run walk your horse out .and when you get in the ring turn him away from the pattern till he calms down. if your calm hes calm .and when your calm hes calm. When yo ride at home you should also take trail rides and do fun stuff like that dont focus on barrels at all my horse was getting like that and i quit practing barrels try bareback or cutting or roping a sport where you can still practice turns.
question 1:pick up the rein by the barrel and keep his shoulder up all he's doing is try to anticpate the pattern.dont practice the pattern you dont want to have the horse antipate the turns.make sure you get the pockets too that helps too you might have to go wider on some barrels if these suggestions dont work. im gonna make another comment becase it will be to long
Okay for the first question, Answer is, is there any particular colour to the barrels? During a flat out gallop especially around corners horses do tend to duck their heads, it shows that they are gaining speed its nothing really to worry about but if the problem bothers you you could try running reins (tie them from the bit to under the girth it stops them from being able to rear and being able to duck) or you could try a martingale. Answers both questions! Good Luck!
i know u wear hats n stuff in competions but at least while ur training wear a certified helmet. ur going so fast and it would really be damaging if u bit the dust. and u need one because u r turning sharp around the barrels at great speed and if spirits legs buckled underneath him and he fell u could hit ur head on the barrel. anyway u 2 make a good team. ride on!
try not to run ur horse it can burn him out and he may not waht to do barrels any more. if he hits the barrel with his sholder than push him with ur inside leg. and lift up with ur reain to get his nose up
work through the patterns at a walk get it down, slow trot, fast trot, lope, extened canter, then after a while youll get to the run.. but that's what i do i i normally get 15-16's just cuz i work so much on precision. if you don't understand what i'm saying reply to my comment =]
ok try running him passed the barrel and stop him at the wall on all 3 barrels and do it like 3 or 4 times and then when you do your runs just hold his shoulder up until you get to the turning point in your pocket
thats right dont give up! You might just get to the NFR! Me and my horse did the 75 up and back and we got a 13.72! And it was only our second time doin it.And now were barrel racing crazy!!!!!! YAH!

ok! the one below me is wrong you dont shift your weight bc that will cause them to slip and fall. when you practice get 2or3 tires and make a loop around the barrel that h ducts to go on the inside of barrel. my horse did that and do you exhibition?? bc if you do dont bc they think your exhibition is his run
Great shot at 1;02. Just something if Spirit is getting nervous and rearing up and all, and your scared somone might get hurt warn people but he should be okay if you walk him around heaps and let him know whats going on and always speak to him helps too. and with him ducking off before the second barrel i shift my weight to the out side and bump him over with my inside spur. (my horse use to do that all the time it is so frustrating but this stopped him) hope that helps some.
For#2 you cant be nervous! my horse use to rear really high before our turn and i realized that because the first time she reared it was cause my hands were puling her mouth to hard so every other time i'd run her i would stress out ang all tense but as soon as realized how to communicate with her she has been amazing! so now instead of trying to throw me off she calmly walks down the alley!
i am a jumper and i got my horse to go over a scary jump the firy few times he refused then i started to talk to him and he did it ( no video due to pets )
At the gate, when your about to make a run, try to not be nervous they can sense it and freak out, I would take your horse to a bunch of different arena's and just make them walk threw the gate, many time's and each time they go threw nice, make sure you reward them, by a simple "good boy" and a little treat or something.
It look's like your not using a bit, if your not. I would try a simple snaffle, therestill soft and you might get sharper turn's on the barrel's. He looks great though ! take your horse wide to the second barrel s he simplie cannot dodge it, he may take it wide but it's how to start.
1. take him around the barrels a lot in a walk/jog/trot and finally the lope if possibly. If knocking the barrel over teach horse to move its hip out- take foot out of sturrip and kick hip to get him to move out.
2. make sure u dont feed oats before your run - makes em hyper!!

You putt more wight on your inside foot the one closest to the berrel. You dont lean to the outside you through your horse off ballence u need to get ur facts straight.
i can answer both of those qusetions because my horse did the same thing! answer 1. when a horse ducks their head that means they dont really feel comfy with that barrel. so what u do is let him smell it and walk around it a couple of times. answer 2. every time when my horse gets nervous i let her walk around and let her clam her slef and talk to her in a smooth tone. but when u r on the horse, just pat there neck and u shuld do 2 fingers and go in circle. that always makes them clam down.l8tr
Don't get off until you are at the gate. Then after you get off loosen your cinch, take off his boots, if you have started running with a tie down take off the bridle, ect. Basically make it a place to relax. You can give him a treat there like was mentioned before even. Most places will let you do all of this at the gate during the drags.
You guys really look good though keep up the good work.

In answer to your 1st question try keeping your hands a little higher. You have them in good position around the barrels but a little low between. He's probably trying to turn back on 2nd when you start to lift your hand.
As for the 2nd question. There's no reason for any barrel horse to be crazy in the gate in my opinion. lol. The best way to get them over that is to first off walk the pattern as much as you run it. Secondly any time you are at a race after your run take him back to the gate.
continue.... step into your sturup and look at the wall or gate infront of you like your going to run into it and you dont even think about your second turn untill your there lift up and look around and trust him no mean hands keep really light hands, also kick, kick, kick, and maybe bring out a whip and pop him once or twice before the barrel and tech him, help him out get out of his way and you do your job and he will do his. 99.9% of the time its the riders fault.
Hey, my advice to you is if your calm your horse will be calm, desncitize the gate so every time he or she is good he gets a treat and thats the only place he gets a treat soon the gate will be a good thing! also if you horse rears get off and lead it in and treat him up if hes good. The gate is your friend. The ducking is an anticipation stratagey for a horse so when you practice
ok.. well when u ride dont always go and do the barrel pattern.. walk him to the barrel pattern and jst let him look @ it.. then if u are havin alley way problems then u would walk him up and down the alley makin sure tht u and him r calm.. evently he will calm down.. duckin..
what helped buckaroo was
go to ur first barrel and do ur pocket move him over pethis butt and pick him up
My guess is that you havent done enough slow work with him, And make sure you switch it up, dont practice barrels every time you ride. Do Tons of drills, set up 4 barrels in a square, and go around them at a walk, then a trot, and make sure you leave a good pocket, ask him to bend him body to mold to the barrel, Use your legs which alot of riders dont do. just work on it slow, do alot of trotting not the cantering and running the pattern. Hope it helps.
My first to barrel horses reared because they got excited to run so I had to walk them threw the pattern slowly to calm them down.. It also helps to talk to them.. Most barrel horses act up anyways fortunaely I just bought one that barely does anything
My barrel horse did this a lot but he stoped it may be theat he is used to running a bigger or smaller pattern or the patterns are diff. to himif u know that he is going to do it be ready for it hold the opposite rein and hold it so he doesn't have the chance to duck out hope that helps.
I have a mare that I barrel Race and she has an additude and rears up. I can tell you right now that it is the most dangerous thing a horse can do and VERY scary. If your horse is known to rear try your hardest to prevent it keep him clam and if he starts tossing his heand or acting like he's going to rear or he does rear pull a rein to one side. Some people think it's fun & cool when horses rear but it's not. Be carfull you don't want to end up like me having the horse come backwards on to you.
I dont race yet.... but im going to be starting this summer. What I did for my friend, I told her just to be calm, your horse knows when your nervous, so thy get nervous. Just talk to them, put them and relax, hopefully that will work on your horse. Does on my friends horse, and the horses i ride for fun.
get off and loosen his cinch and just have him sit there.
I also taught my horse to open the gate and close the gate while I am on his back, which helped a lot as well.
One main thing I had a problem with is my own body language. Make sure when you get ready to enter the arena don't get all up on his face until it is time to take off into a gallop. Lean back, pet his butt and relax yourself. Jake doesn't care if you pet his butt or not, but shifting my weight back helped him to calm down.
As for the nervous problem. haha People used to leave the gate area when I walked up. I have to yell at people to get out of my way. I can say we have had our share of accidents because of the gate.
One easy way I found to get my horse over it is if you don't have an alley and you are aloud to. Park your horse by the gate and make that his comfort zone. I had to use another person to help keep jake from going bonkers and hurting someone, but after a while he would calm down, then I would (c)
Jake used to always drop his shoulder on the second barrel and make bad turns on the second. But I ended up finding out it was because he was making sloppy flying lead changes and it was throwing him off. I got him making very wide figure eights around the two barrels, practicing lead changes in between. Eventually I started to narrow my circle and start to get closer and closer to the barrel. Now he has more control with his lead changes and it really helps.
for the tying problem... i suggest tting to a tree because most of the time they cant pull that out of the ground. lol get a crappy halter the first time because most of the time they will break, this has happened to me many times!. as for the arena problems there are sooooo many different opions.. so i would suggest getting a trainer you see regualry and working with your horse where more of a proffesional could watch you and see what mistakes are being made. i hope this helps!
Yay!!lol... I thank all of ya'll for ur wonderful advice!! But I have some good news...Spirit is tieable now!!!(srry dont no how to spell that lol) I took yalls advice to just let him stand 4 a few hrs...and now he is like the most patient horse ever!!! lol So once again THANK U!!:D

my horse sometimes rears up 2so i just have to let him run as fast as i can in a round pen just 4 bout 2-5 minutes 2 get him to calm down. and 4 ur 3rd question try cross tying him at home sumtimes trust me treir is pretty much no where he can go and c if that calms him down
Yea i used to but they were 2 much 4 him..so now im goin to get some bumper spurs to move him off the barrel when he trys to duck it...but so far he's doin pretty good without them..so we'll c:)
Do just the opposite. If he throughs a fit, ignore him. He will eventually quit. You will have to do this a few times but trust me, it works. One of my worst pet peeves is when people let their horse paw or get away with stuff while tied up. If you walk away and go do something else for a couple hours, he will be a different horse. He MUST stand there for more than an hour though! I hope this has helped. Thank you! Katie
If those don't work, try giving him a few months off and just trail ride, or teach him a different discipline. As for tying him up, find a couple good leadropes, a sturdy halter and a good solid tree. Tie him up, leave him there for atleast two hours (make sure the weather is nice). Or if you have an indoor barn, tie him to something very sturdy, walk away and don't look back. I am assuming that when you tie him up, he acts bad and you let him go. That is the wrong thing to do.
Try going in an arena and just working on his flexibility and some western pleasure stuff just for fun. All horses should be able to do 2 disciplines. You could also try doing some reining patterns if you know them at all. The worst thing is a horse that rears at the gate, you will get kicked out of some shows for that. If he even hints at rearing, calm down and calm your body down, try backing him in. Also, have someone walk next you and pet him, saying "its ok".
Your horse needs to get flexibility throughout its whole body to bend around the barrel better. Lateral and vertical flexion are great. i would start there. You also need him to bend from his barrel (the stomach) and this will help him turn tighter barrels. How old is Spirit? You two look great together. As for the gate problem, make sure that everytime you go to ride him, you aren't always doing barrels. Doing just one event gets boring to horses. Try trail riding.
Your horse is absolutely gorgeous! My horse is named Spirit too :) I love barrel racing and would SO do it if he was a quarter horse.
Relax completely in the saddle, horses can sense if you are nervous or excited and such. As for rearing, I was watching another video with a horse that reared constantly. The guy sat through the rears but made him stand completely still after that for a WHILE, then asked him to move forward. It worked. Pat him and give him treats at the arena gate.
i think you need to bring your sturups up some and work on lowering your hands arounf them turns it'll help make them cleanier and not choppy i would also try some roll backs to help turns and body movement....
but ya'll are a Great team and i think you 2 can go far!!!! Keep up the good work!!!!
okay for ducking at the second barrel and only at the second barrel... at full speed or at a show.. it might just be cus something over there in a particular arena that scares him, but if its all the time.. then go back to the basic's thats ur best bet... do slow easy work with him the correct way.. make sure ur hands, legs, and everything else is where its suppose to be... and when you make the turn for the second barrel, have both hands on the reins to better help guide him..
2.with a horse tht gets really nervous or firey b4 going into the areana try go in there and not running.teach them tht jst cus they r in the alley or going into an areana doesnt mean they r gnna run. do more thn jst run whn ur in the areana.let ur horse no it can be a calm place. and relax while riding.once ur horse can calmly enter the areana it shld help keep them quieter b4 a run =] good luck

2.He gets nervous because you get nervous when you do it goes right through the reins my horse does about the same but she isnt nervous she is ready to run and if i dont let her she goes crazy she rears a bit so...be sure his is nervousness not adrenaline before you try to fix the problem..
3.Tie him up at your place and let him stand for example tie him up at 10in the morning and untie him at 4 in the evening to teach him patients:)

2. some people run their horses in circles if they get really nervous and then enter the gate and let them stand 4awhile to teach them that going in the gate in a reward to working outside

If spirit nows the patteren rele well the all you need to do is put most of your wight on the inside and just barrly put any presur on the rain and just let him do the work. if you do this you wont nock as many berrals down but its what u fell most comfotable with but just try it one time.
I have a sugestion for the second question. If he likes to get very excited before a run try and just relaxing before it is time to. Like scratching him on the shoulder. That always works for my horse (:
Thx guys! And I know I keep tell u guys I'll tell u how it goes. But, now I'm serious, lol!!! I'm signing up for a round up club deal, right down the street from me. So, I'll be able to work on barrels there. So, it should be near the first week of Dec. were I'll let u all know. Now, I'm goin let u guys no, now, that it has been 5 mon. since we've been on barrels, so it should be interesting, LOL!!!!

3. to tie him, make him as comfortable as possible, (ex. haybag, water, ex.) and tie him to a sturdy post and let him be crazy until he finally gives up and calms down. then take him off and walk him around to reward him.

2. my barrel horse has a tenancy to do the same thing. what i do is quietly, slowly walk her in, and then make her stand for a few seconds. It might be a pain not able to run in for a while, but eventually he will know that theres nothing to be nervous about.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
wow! you guys have improved a lot!
to answer your questions...
1. try to push him off the barrel with your leg, a light spur might help that. Otherwise, in practice just make him go around first like normal, and then once at second. make him do some medium sized circles around the barrel until he comes out of that "ducking" or better known as dropping his shoulder.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Answer #1 A stallion at my barn does that on the second barrel, try to use you leg to push him off of it; or possiblely go wide, then get smaller around the back end of the turn.
Answer #2 My gelding does that, just walk him away from the alleywall and try to get him calmer before going thru the alley, when I make my gelding do circles before running, he doesn't always get the best of times, but that may just be my gelding.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Answer#3 Try leaving him/her tied with a nose-chain on, that way if he/she rears, it'll pull on their nose. Also, try leaving him tied up more often, he/she may just be impatient or excited, make sure you tie your knots pretty tight, because they looser they are, the more they can rear.
I hope some of that will help, my gelding has a habit with all that. I wish you the best of luck!
Sorry u guys, that I haven't told u the process of me and spirit, but I just want u guys to no that I just got done moving & have only gotten to ride him once & haven't even done barrels yet. But, like I said before, I'll make sure I let u guys no when I do, I promise.
You deff NEVER want to look at the barrel otherwise you are going to knock it.

2 do alot of slow work going in and out of allys and gates
MiKabuki16 4 months ago
NUMBER ONE!(: haha when your practicing (no matter what speed) stop him right before the barrel walk or trot around the barrel while lifting with your inside hand adn inside leg about half way arouind the barrel... if this does not work, instead of stoping him, at the last min. when he goes to dive turn him the opopisite direction!(: haha this should workkk,, and i subbeddd sub back?(:
Barrelcrazzy 4 months ago
Continued.....When you walk them through the pattern after you run through it, your letting them cool down and your always teaching them that just cause they see a barrel doesnt mean its always time to run. They have to learn to run when they are asked. With this, when you ask them to run they are more likely to give you more of themselves than if you ask them to run all the time. Hope all this helped! I train rodeo horses so if you ever have questions feel free to message me :)
GaRodeGal 4 months ago
2.) In doin lots of slow work that will help with his nerves at the gate and on the second barrel. His is wanting to turn before the second barrel cause he is getting to "Hot". When coming to the second barrel hold him with the outside hand and the inside leg to keep him from turning before the barrel and two to keep him off the second barrel. To help with the nerves at the gate, when ever you get done running a pattern at home, always go back and walk through it at least twice.
GaRodeGal 4 months ago
1.) In lookin and watching some of your runs, his biggest problem is he is havin a hard time gettin his rear end underneath of him. Do lots of slow work with him at the walk/jog. Walk/Jog him to the barrel then bring him to a halt & ask him to back a few steps, then let him go around barrel, holding your inside hand slightly higher to get him to pick up his shoulder. This will teach him that when he comes to a barrel he has to slow his rear end down to get under himself & to pick up his shoulder
GaRodeGal 4 months ago
My advice is Dont look at the barrel, look past it then look at your next barrel. If you look down your horses neck you'll knock everytime.

Some horses aren't made for barrels, some hate it. Did you still need an answer?
EightBelles6 5 months ago
take it slow around the barrels at first, relax in your seat, and maybe possibly getting an instructor:)
TheCheyrose 5 months ago
Very good job, both of you are naturals!
Mail me =)

and make him do what hes supposed to do.... let me know if that stuff doesmt work and i got some other tips for ya
08countrygal 7 months ago
Alright
#1: when you are practicing, go thru the barrels just at a walk a couple times and make him do what hes supposed to do, then try it a trot... keep doing that until he shows improvement. my horse did the same thing at one time but i did that over and over again every single day and it worked.
#2: every typical horse does that, (but people shouldnt be in the alley way when you are about to run) but maybe try a different bit. and try your hardest to get him out in the arena and make him

TheMollydog400 7 months ago
ok so idk if this has already been said cuz i only read a few pages but someone said to tie him with a chain over his nose...DONT DO THAT!! thats a big no no! any horse you tie with a chain over his nose will freak the second it gets too tight and you may end up with a train wreak on your hands...it can possibly break several bones in your horses face and then you would more than likely have to put him down and hes way to pretty for that :)

Thanks!

When u go around your barrels u need to pick up on the rein u pull out when pull up u get him to bend that way he wont shoulder in and hot the barrel he will keep it round and be able to keep a forward motion for quick times
barrelbabe1946 1 year ago
well what i do with my horses is to teach them the basics walking, turning, sprinting.

NickiRocky 1 year ago
1st do alot of slow work and keep him listening to you,
2nd he is gate sour, ground work and slow work as well and not acually taking him through the pattern when you walk through there should do the trick!
TheBarrelracer00 1 year ago
ok hi... um i was watching and the thing is when you turn your barrel you dont look to the next one, um and going in the alley its not only him acting up... you are nervous and your horse feeds off your energy. you need to use a bit on this horse he is in need of one lol um but try slower work because you and your horse have to be comfterble with eachother and with the pattern tryst me it will help
rushstreetrunnin 1 year ago
I can answer the #2 question. I have had the same problems before! & it sucks.
Practice this before shows: When walking into the arena, Let him take 1 step, then stop him. 1 step. Stop. 1 Step. Stop. Until you're in the arena. If he takes more steps than you asked, back him up!-To undo the steps he took without you asking him to. Do this EVERY time you enter the arena at home.
Every time you exit the arena, back him out!! Never let him just walk out, because that will become his way to escape.
XxMyFreshFetishxX 1 year ago 5
Ok well I started out that way and when I was better I trained a horse only one and sold her and I was 10 when I did that now I learned my mistakes!
trixielove1 1 year ago
that barrels is just a job and its easy and fun they can relax... my mare had the same issue and it took tons of walking and trotting the pattern to get her to calm down and realize that its just barrels... they go in, run, and their done. Haven't had an issue with her since.
orlndblmsug 1 year ago
To fix ducking make sure he knows leg yields and moves off leg pressure. When you come up to the 2nd barrel (practice at a walk and trot before loping) take it very wide... he will make up the distance when speed is added. I've also seen people use cones or tires for markers so they know how far to stay away. If that doesn't work take him to the 2nd barrel and turn him hard the OPPOSITE way you normally turn to throw him off. As for the excitement, walk walk walk the pattern. When a horse knows
orlndblmsug 1 year ago
heyy girl make sure when u go out you look straight for your points around the barrel and slide your hand down and pull around the barrel and lean in and remember to never cross your hands

for #1 i would say.. check him before the barrel to an almost stop and practice that at home on the 2nd barrel
and #2i would try waalking in a circle of your first barrel so he has to listen to waat ur gonna do next
if this advice dont work im sorry lol it has worked on my horse but she had a problem with the end pole she would gust pull through the hack.. then a bit.. and now i check her and it seems to workk
chilekatcayti 1 year ago
This is just what i would do. I would walk your horse to the barrel, and stop him for a minute, then keep doing that at all 3 barrels and do it at a walk, trot, lope and gallop if u want.
BarrelRacer955 1 year ago
For #2 when u practice before u do the pattern just make him stand in front of it without moving like standing still. And do it where ever u go so he gets used to standing still before he runs!:)

BarrelRacer955 1 year ago
I build them up to it.
I walk the pattern, then trot the pattern then lope it.
Try a few fast one's.
I never push as hard trainng as I would in an actual event.
Footing is very important.
I do not recommend doing fast turns on pasture grass. It is slippery.
You'll go down eventually. This will scare the horse and may spoil him in future attempts.

ok well for one the ducking before the barrel try to lift your horses head up and hold it that way he cant get it donw again. um and number 2 well its not that your horse wants out its because they know they have a job 2 do. so walk him around some and stroke his neck and talk 2 him. um i would suggest that you maybe try lifting straight up that way you get yor horse set up write. and try to sit as straight as possible that way ure horse dnt get knocked off balance.
rushstreetrunnin 2 years ago
For question one:
My horse ducked on the first barrel every time I would do barrels. How I got him to stop was when he started to duck I would pull his head up high and make him back about 5 steps. Then start him over at the pattern and walk him through it.
luvkatie80 2 years ago
I have one of Brenda Mays horse she traind... well it wasn't hers but she trainded her.
barrelgirl1997barrel 2 years ago
The second question. Just walk him up and stop in side the arena until he calms and stands for 5 seconds then walk him out and do it again... its not that his nervous he just wants to get out of the arena as fast as he can to be around the other horses. And you shouldn't run a horse on grass. risk o injury if they slip or fall.
zebrat7 2 years ago
ok... i can answer question number 2. but 1st i need to kno, do u use a bit or a hackamore?

1. my mare used to duck before barrels.. it was so annoying!! so what i did to fix this was lots of slow work. i'd walk the pattern and when i got to the barrel that my horse ducks at i lope a decent size circle around it a few times then come in tight and turn it.
2. ah the joys of crazy horses =] if your about to make a run RELAX..your horse can feel when your tense so make sure your not nervous becuz that can cause ur horse to become nervous too.

i have a question when i first stareted out with my horse who is very hotheaded as well she turned the barrels very sharp like it should be done then towards the end she wouldent turn them at all she would turn with a very very wide cut why is this?

my horse loves to be a brat in the ally as well. with her i just pet her and try to keep her calm....if your horse ever locks up dont force it to move...wait it out (ik annoying) and then allow it to move when it wants too...its ok alot of horses are just like tht....most dont deal with the problems but if you feel you want too.. just relax and your horse will too

i need to learn how to sit when my horse is on those really fast parts of each run to every barrel and the "homestrech". Please give me some advice. Do i just ride it out and that helps? I'm bouncing in the saddle alot and I hate doing it because it makes Penny uncomfortable. please help.
SarahEMurch 2 years ago
when your going between barrels sit in a 2 point becuz tht will take your weight off your horse and allow him/her to run faster and extend better...when your at the barrels sit down tht will signal your horse tht a change is about to occur..when you are on the homestretch a two point position is your best bet. .. just pick your body off the saddle and put your weight in the stirrups...oo and what type of horse do you have..my horse is named Penny as well. she is a morgan qh

BarrelRacer955 2 years ago
the gate problems are really hard to work through when you are at a race with everyone around you trying to help, but really that just makes it worse for you and the horse. take a couple timed runs before or after your race and make him WALK through the gate over and over again and then procede to walk through the pattern. make sure you stay calm as well. i like to pet my horse on the neck as we get through the alley way it helps her stay calm and know that i am ready to go with her. msg me
angelchick6103 2 years ago
for ur 1st question, if he is shoulderin the 2nd barrel then go back to slow work and trot him into it EXACTLY the way u want him to take it and really over exagerate the flex and the pocket... if he keeps shouldering another thing you can do is walk, trot, lope, or run him into the second and turn him the opposite way of the barrel and repeat that, he will learn eventually not to shoulder it. msg me if u need any more help at all :)
angelchick6103 2 years ago
the attitude in the alley is VERY IMPORTANT! just try and reward him if he is calm and if u tense up it will just be worse...and if he starts doing stuff like rearing do a one rein stop and dont let him run! make him walk or trot if u have to but dont let him get away with that!...ur horse is gonna get it he just has to get it in his head

slow work..walk then build up to a trot.
and use your legs to make your horse move out when you get to the barrel.
sometimes when you hold back going to a barrel, the horse starts to anticipate the turn and will turn too soon either hitting the barrel or ducking.
Good luck :)
caseyserafini 2 years ago
My horse had a probably ducking the first barrel (he is a leftly) What i did is figure 8 work between the first and second barrel. What you do is stop him at the pocket of each one and make him sit there then make him walk around it. and just keep doing that and it should help. Also about every 3rd time you do that add in the 3rd barrel. I hope that helps.

all horses get hipped up before they go to
do there barrels or what ever speed event u r doin just dont always run your horse threw the shoot try walking them in then back out and soo fourth u might even try letting ur horse walk in and do a little circle before taking off ...... but great video : )
cory364 2 years ago
My horse used to duck on the second barrel also... What works for me is to look past the barrel not at it, then between the first and second makes sure you have both hands on the reins, not just one. Once he breaks the habit and picks up speed you can go from one hand to the other without using both.. but for now use two to guide him better.
appaloosa24tess 2 years ago
i do mounted shooting and we had a horse that was rearing up so bad at the gate that he alsmot killed quintin, all we did was kept him out of the arena for a while and about 5 riders before we ran, walk around, get his head in the game and stand by the gate, also, make the arena a place your horse wants to go into. dont always run in the arena either, go in and just do slow work without barrels, hope that helps, nice lloking horse btw
buffalogirl95 2 years ago
if your horse is ducking in front of the barrel you need to keep working on pushing past, go back to slow work.
and second about the gate issue you really need to work over and over and over again when you arent running to go in and walk out and know that the arena isn't a bad place. if necessary make the arena the best place for the horse to be, that meaning make the horse a little unconfortable outside the gate

Its not hard to teach them to do it. Just start out slow intraducing them to the barrels at a walk. Then work ur speed up. Just keep running ur horse on the barrels and evenchally, u will just need to hold on and ur horse will know the pattern. :D
BarrelRacer955 2 years ago
true, not trying to be rude, but the more you RUN the horse the more he will try and pull things like shouldering, if he is only doing one now he might graduate to doing it on the others as well.you have to help the horse learn along the way. :)

for the first Q.

Dj <3
xDjx24 2 years ago
Well that's what I thought it was 2. So, I had a chiropractor look at him and he ended up finding that his back was in pretty bad shape. So we got that fixed and got his teeth fixed too, and WOW is he doing a lot better. He still ducks the barrel once n awhile tho.
LiLMissRyteWynger 2 years ago
Be sure you have a certified performance vet thoroughly check your horse. Sometimes horses will duck and or act up in the alley way because they fear the pain that's about to come from the turns and running. Also have a chiropractor check your horse also to make sure their not "out" somewhere on their body.

answer to number 2 if you get nerves e will sense it then he will get nerves you can get off of him and walk him around to calm him down
barrelracerforlyfe 2 years ago
part of my last comment
question 2:make sure you are calm .breath get a drink just relax before a run walk your horse out .and when you get in the ring turn him away from the pattern till he calms down. if your calm hes calm .and when your calm hes calm. When yo ride at home you should also take trail rides and do fun stuff like that dont focus on barrels at all my horse was getting like that and i quit practing barrels try bareback or cutting or roping a sport where you can still practice turns.
flagracer11 2 years ago
question 1:pick up the rein by the barrel and keep his shoulder up all he's doing is try to anticpate the pattern.dont practice the pattern you dont want to have the horse antipate the turns.make sure you get the pockets too that helps too you might have to go wider on some barrels if these suggestions dont work. im gonna make another comment becase it will be to long

flagracer11 2 years ago
Okay for the first question, Answer is, is there any particular colour to the barrels? During a flat out gallop especially around corners horses do tend to duck their heads, it shows that they are gaining speed its nothing really to worry about but if the problem bothers you you could try running reins (tie them from the bit to under the girth it stops them from being able to rear and being able to duck) or you could try a martingale. Answers both questions! Good Luck!

i know u wear hats n stuff in competions but at least while ur training wear a certified helmet. ur going so fast and it would really be damaging if u bit the dust. and u need one because u r turning sharp around the barrels at great speed and if spirits legs buckled underneath him and he fell u could hit ur head on the barrel. anyway u 2 make a good team. ride on!

try not to run ur horse it can burn him out and he may not waht to do barrels any more. if he hits the barrel with his sholder than push him with ur inside leg. and lift up with ur reain to get his nose up

work through the patterns at a walk get it down, slow trot, fast trot, lope, extened canter, then after a while youll get to the run.. but that's what i do i i normally get 15-16's just cuz i work so much on precision. if you don't understand what i'm saying reply to my comment =]

ok try running him passed the barrel and stop him at the wall on all 3 barrels and do it like 3 or 4 times and then when you do your runs just hold his shoulder up until you get to the turning point in your pocket

ok! the one below me is wrong you dont shift your weight bc that will cause them to slip and fall. when you practice get 2or3 tires and make a loop around the barrel that h ducts to go on the inside of barrel. my horse did that and do you exhibition?? bc if you do dont bc they think your exhibition is his run

(my horse use to do that all the time it is so frustrating but this stopped him) hope that helps some.
megzxocowgirl 2 years ago
For#2 you cant be nervous! my horse use to rear really high before our turn and i realized that because the first time she reared it was cause my hands were puling her mouth to hard so every other time i'd run her i would stress out ang all tense but as soon as realized how to communicate with her she has been amazing! so now instead of trying to throw me off she calmly walks down the alley!

At the gate, when your about to make a run, try to not be nervous they can sense it and freak out, I would take your horse to a bunch of different arena's and just make them walk threw the gate, many time's and each time they go threw nice, make sure you reward them, by a simple "good boy" and a little treat or something.
Jessiikinz 2 years ago
It look's like your not using a bit, if your not. I would try a simple snaffle, therestill soft and you might get sharper turn's on the barrel's. He looks great though ! take your horse wide to the second barrel s he simplie cannot dodge it, he may take it wide but it's how to start.
Jessiikinz 2 years ago
So you run nbha??? bcuz i run csha and i think i might start runnin barrels

1. take him around the barrels a lot in a walk/jog/trot and finally the lope if possibly. If knocking the barrel over teach horse to move its hip out- take foot out of sturrip and kick hip to get him to move out.
2. make sure u dont feed oats before your run - makes em hyper!!

if you go to a show: show your horse whats going on
at home or anywhere else: decentize the barrels to your horse try getting a little closer to some of them don't get to close
chelsi96 2 years ago
i can answer both of those qusetions because my horse did the same thing! answer 1. when a horse ducks their head that means they dont really feel comfy with that barrel. so what u do is let him smell it and walk around it a couple of times. answer 2. every time when my horse gets nervous i let her walk around and let her clam her slef and talk to her in a smooth tone. but when u r on the horse, just pat there neck and u shuld do 2 fingers and go in circle. that always makes them clam down.l8tr

rodeolife144 3 years ago

Secondly any time you are at a race after your run take him back to the gate.
kansascowgirl2008 3 years ago
Dont look at your barrel look where you want to go! OK it will seriously work!
jamitsy 3 years ago
continue.... step into your sturup and look at the wall or gate infront of you like your going to run into it and you dont even think about your second turn untill your there lift up and look around and trust him no mean hands keep really light hands, also kick, kick, kick, and maybe bring out a whip and pop him once or twice before the barrel and tech him, help him out get out of his way and you do your job and he will do his. 99.9% of the time its the riders fault.
jamitsy 3 years ago
Hey, my advice to you is if your calm your horse will be calm, desncitize the gate so every time he or she is good he gets a treat and thats the only place he gets a treat soon the gate will be a good thing! also if you horse rears get off and lead it in and treat him up if hes good. The gate is your friend. The ducking is an anticipation stratagey for a horse so when you practice
jamitsy 3 years ago
ok.. well when u ride dont always go and do the barrel pattern.. walk him to the barrel pattern and jst let him look @ it.. then if u are havin alley way problems then u would walk him up and down the alley makin sure tht u and him r calm.. evently he will calm down.. duckin..
what helped buckaroo was
go to ur first barrel and do ur pocket move him over pethis butt and pick him up
well hope it helps and good luck runnin him
1championonly 3 years ago
My guess is that you havent done enough slow work with him, And make sure you switch it up, dont practice barrels every time you ride. Do Tons of drills, set up 4 barrels in a square, and go around them at a walk, then a trot, and make sure you leave a good pocket, ask him to bend him body to mold to the barrel, Use your legs which alot of riders dont do. just work on it slow, do alot of trotting not the cantering and running the pattern. Hope it helps.
Jordan99911 3 years ago
My first to barrel horses reared because they got excited to run so I had to walk them threw the pattern slowly to calm them down.. It also helps to talk to them.. Most barrel horses act up anyways fortunaely I just bought one that barely does anything
darla2116 3 years ago

LifeLovinCowgirl 3 years ago
I dont race yet.... but im going to be starting this summer. What I did for my friend, I told her just to be calm, your horse knows when your nervous, so thy get nervous. Just talk to them, put them and relax, hopefully that will work on your horse. Does on my friends horse, and the horses i ride for fun.

dressage102 3 years ago
get off and loosen his cinch and just have him sit there.
Horsesdontlie 3 years ago
As for the nervous problem. haha People used to leave the gate area when I walked up. I have to yell at people to get out of my way. I can say we have had our share of accidents because of the gate.
One easy way I found to get my horse over it is if you don't have an alley and you are aloud to. Park your horse by the gate and make that his comfort zone. I had to use another person to help keep jake from going bonkers and hurting someone, but after a while he would calm down, then I would (c)
Horsesdontlie 3 years ago
Sounds a lot like my gelding.
Horsesdontlie 3 years ago
for the tying problem... i suggest tting to a tree because most of the time they cant pull that out of the ground. lol get a crappy halter the first time because most of the time they will break, this has happened to me many times!. as for the arena problems there are sooooo many different opions.. so i would suggest getting a trainer you see regualry and working with your horse where more of a proffesional could watch you and see what mistakes are being made. i hope this helps!

LiLMissRyteWynger 3 years ago
Do just the opposite. If he throughs a fit, ignore him. He will eventually quit. You will have to do this a few times but trust me, it works. One of my worst pet peeves is when people let their horse paw or get away with stuff while tied up. If you walk away and go do something else for a couple hours, he will be a different horse. He MUST stand there for more than an hour though! I hope this has helped. Thank you! Katie
lonewolfhorsetrainin 3 years ago
If those don't work, try giving him a few months off and just trail ride, or teach him a different discipline. As for tying him up, find a couple good leadropes, a sturdy halter and a good solid tree. Tie him up, leave him there for atleast two hours (make sure the weather is nice). Or if you have an indoor barn, tie him to something very sturdy, walk away and don't look back. I am assuming that when you tie him up, he acts bad and you let him go. That is the wrong thing to do.
lonewolfhorsetrainin 3 years ago
Try going in an arena and just working on his flexibility and some western pleasure stuff just for fun. All horses should be able to do 2 disciplines. You could also try doing some reining patterns if you know them at all. The worst thing is a horse that rears at the gate, you will get kicked out of some shows for that. If he even hints at rearing, calm down and calm your body down, try backing him in. Also, have someone walk next you and pet him, saying "its ok".
lonewolfhorsetrainin 3 years ago
Your horse needs to get flexibility throughout its whole body to bend around the barrel better. Lateral and vertical flexion are great. i would start there. You also need him to bend from his barrel (the stomach) and this will help him turn tighter barrels. How old is Spirit? You two look great together. As for the gate problem, make sure that everytime you go to ride him, you aren't always doing barrels. Doing just one event gets boring to horses. Try trail riding.
lonewolfhorsetrainin 3 years ago
Your horse is absolutely gorgeous! My horse is named Spirit too :) I love barrel racing and would SO do it if he was a quarter horse.
Relax completely in the saddle, horses can sense if you are nervous or excited and such. As for rearing, I was watching another video with a horse that reared constantly. The guy sat through the rears but made him stand completely still after that for a WHILE, then asked him to move forward. It worked. Pat him and give him treats at the arena gate.

hey wow ya'll are doing good!!!!
i think you need to bring your sturups up some and work on lowering your hands arounf them turns it'll help make them cleanier and not choppy i would also try some roll backs to help turns and body movement....

okay for ducking at the second barrel and only at the second barrel... at full speed or at a show.. it might just be cus something over there in a particular arena that scares him, but if its all the time.. then go back to the basic's thats ur best bet... do slow easy work with him the correct way.. make sure ur hands, legs, and everything else is where its suppose to be... and when you make the turn for the second barrel, have both hands on the reins to better help guide him..

3.Tie him up at your place and let him stand for example tie him up at 10in the morning and untie him at 4 in the evening to teach him patients:)

wow! you guys have improved a lot!
to answer your questions...
1. try to push him off the barrel with your leg, a light spur might help that. Otherwise, in practice just make him go around first like normal, and then once at second. make him do some medium sized circles around the barrel until he comes out of that "ducking" or better known as dropping his shoulder.

I agree with SammiAndStar about the tieing issue. Just make sure you tie a quick release knot just in case.

SammiAndStar 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Answer#3 Try leaving him/her tied with a nose-chain on, that way if he/she rears, it'll pull on their nose. Also, try leaving him tied up more often, he/she may just be impatient or excited, make sure you tie your knots pretty tight, because they looser they are, the more they can rear.
I hope some of that will help, my gelding has a habit with all that. I wish you the best of luck!
