To answer a question of Steven's rank in this video. He was a "Green Stripe" when this video was made. In our Dojo, all belts are "Stripe" belts in the Junior (Ages 12 and under) class.
Steven in this case would be a 11 years old who only trained for about 6 months.
He has moved on to the senior class and doing well.
As for whether it is Traditional or not, well, please pay us a visit if you are visiting the Orlando area. Or at least checkout the Photo gallery on our Website.
All your stances are incorrect. And I dont think you are in a Traditional Shotokan Karate. I am judging this by your belt. There is no such belt in Traditional Shotokan Karate ;)
You're an idiot, you have no idea what youre talking about. Those stances are in traditional karate you moron. And his belt looks like its a junior black belt which they give to kids, or does your school give full black belts to little kids? And theres a bunch of traditional karate organisations that run it differently, and shotokan itself is very modern and was changed by funakoshis japanese students after his death (point kumite for example), so its actually not as traditional as you think
You are an idiot? Are you even training traditional shotokan karate? These stances are in traditional shotokan karate, yes. But what I meant is that they did not look perfect for a black belt. Our school and in all actual traditional shotokan karate schools I have seen regular belts for adults and kids. And exactly you said there are a lot "traditional" karate organizations. Well those who do not follow this system are no longer traditional.
Douche, you dont know what you are talking about. Only thing that is messed up is the front stance back leg, but Gichin Funakoshis book has students performing a different position of the back foot in the front stance. And your school sucks if they give kids the same black belt. And shotokan IS NOT traditional, it was created recently, its considered modern, and its based on naha-te (goju) and shorei-te (shorin), and theres traditional factions just as old as jkas whos karate looks different
I know what im talking about. I judge by European standards, here in USA there is not enough discipline in most of shotokan karate dojos. Most of their students are nothing compared to European standards. Yes, there are different positions in his book, but the position this kid was trying to make was incorrect. I am not only talking about this one. Plus I watched his katas and even the easy ones (heian shodan - goan) were not as good as they should be.
I liekd his kick though ;) And no it doesnt suck. This is just the way it is by tradition. And yes my friend, shotokan IS TRADITIONAL. It was created long time ago and it was practiced long time ago as well. Recently, modifications to the "traditional" have been made. But the style it self was long time ago known. Plus what is recent for you?
Only thing that is traditional is that people respect the tradtion of japanese respect and customs. Shotokan was forged in the early 1900s based of naha te and shurei te, it was a mix of those two, but changed for the japanese, which the japanese changed even further (eliminated many locks and takedowns so it wouldnt clash with the judo and jujitsuka, and eliminate weapons to also not clas with kendo) so its not traditional hence the name MODERN KARATE OR FUNAKOSHI MFATHER OF MODERN KARATE
No his stance is correct, what you mean positions.... what is he doing wrong? You are talking all this whoopla and you have yet to point out this little kids mistakes. I train with the SKIF under 10th degree Kanzawa who dropped from the JKA and was considered the most technical shotokan karateka ever (look it up), and my sensei is from europe (not that it matters).
