The Tiger Rag is not by Jelly Roll Morton. It was actually written and performed by Nick LaRocca and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band from New Orleans.Part of the tune was taken from Schubert's "Six German Dances" for piano.Morton was a fabulous liar .The Baron Munchhausen of jazz music.
Morton was a very proud man, sure, and he was very stubborn, sure, and he could tell a great story, sure. But call him a liar? Nah... That's way too easy, isn't it? I don't buy this Morton being a liar business. If anything, it's old hat. Who spreaded that rumor anyway? People like WC Handy, the Melroses, the Spikes, and anyone who had a financial or artistic interest in calling Morton a liar. The tragedy is that it got into the dictionary as a "colourful" sidenote and people like that, I guess.
Epic win. Wow.
