I sincerely think that since justice was NOT served in this case, it proves their point (to them) that god was looking out for them. It is difficult not to agree with that logic. Personally I think the judge should receive a great deal of attention for the way this matter was handled. Great vid, as per usual.

The language seemed to be designed to speak to those parents and to try to convince them that they were wrong as their deluded beliefs killed a child who continue to believe that prayer is the most effective way to health. I think their world view is damaging but they will not become rational nor atheists so the judge was pointing out that within their world it is possible to use doctors.

Yes, I suspect that she feels she is being victimised by the state but the judge was not giving her the option to claim that and not to demonise the medical profession. They have unpleasant views but the judges comments about God speaking through the doctors as well is definitely to stop them using the persecution by the state as an argument.

I disagree "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" to me means that a satanist couple who neglects a child and lets it die, a christian couple who do the same must suffer the same secular punishment. The courts should not take into account the religion of the couple. This was child cruelty and the fact that they think they were right because of religion has nothing to do with it.

It would be interesting to see the case law on Jehovah's Witnesses and Christian Scientists on the issues like parents' refusing to allow their children blood transfusions - I suspect there are no winning cases - there religious beliefs do not trample on the welfare of a child - however they will uphold an adult's right to refuse treatment even if it is unreasonable because of first amendment rights.
