crazy, isn't it? Why is it the kid that dies? why never the parent who gets ill and prays for themselves? I'd applaud in that case. Kids should be cared for by the parents until they are grown and this was just Russian roulette with 6 empty chambers.
I think they would have got more jail time for torturing a puppy or dog fighting. Wow, just wow. Just goes to show you how brainwashed and indoctrinated some folks can become with their sky daddy worship. How stupid.
A slap on the wrist for killing your child. I don't see this kind of religious tolerance in courts for Muslim honor killings and there shouldn't have been any here. They should have been sent up the river for the rest of their lives.
This kind of thing makes me physically ill. Especially because it looks like they'll never learn.
Time to lock those "parents" in my basement and pray for them to find a way out. A week and a half in prison shouldn't be too bad. >.> Fuck the world.
Murdering children. Raping children. Physically and psychologically abusing children.
What's the message here? That if you have "god" on your side then you can get away with anything when it comes to mistreatment of the most vulnerable members of our society.
It seems that "suffer the little children" is an instruction guide for these cunts.
Seeing the picture of them sitting smiling in court is sickening. They killed their daughter through deliberately witholding medical treatment. The judge's remarks re god had no place in the court. This light sentence only sends out a message of excusal of murder.
If a doctor helps a woman abort a fetus the fundies think the doctor should be killed but when fundie parents kill their child it is quite ok. The punishment here is a joke. I wonder what this judge sentenced the last drug addict to.
""The judge told the Newmans(sp?) this would give them the time to think about Kara(sp?AGAIN! goddammit) and what God wants you to learn from this."
I'd like to give that judge a shot of humalog once. They really want to know what their "maker" thinks? Send them to Him. Why deprive the religious of that?
I sincerely think that since justice was NOT served in this case, it proves their point (to them) that god was looking out for them. It is difficult not to agree with that logic. Personally I think the judge should receive a great deal of attention for the way this matter was handled. Great vid, as per usual.
isn't it strange that their sentence for killing their child is shorter than the time it takes to carry a child (be pregnant)? they could actually get the wife knocked up, go to jail, and come out to start raising their next child... with time to spare...
The language seemed to be designed to speak to those parents and to try to convince them that they were wrong as their deluded beliefs killed a child who continue to believe that prayer is the most effective way to health. I think their world view is damaging but they will not become rational nor atheists so the judge was pointing out that within their world it is possible to use doctors.
Yes, I suspect that she feels she is being victimised by the state but the judge was not giving her the option to claim that and not to demonise the medical profession. They have unpleasant views but the judges comments about God speaking through the doctors as well is definitely to stop them using the persecution by the state as an argument.
The injustice is to the scientists, researchers and doctors who spent years of their lives finding cures for other people and then some dumbwit decides to pray to a non existant god instead! It's like someone sitting inside their car and praying to a god to start the car!
Unfortunately the freedom of religion clause of the First Amendment makes what these parents did somewhat legitimate under the law. But yes, it could very well qualify as manslaughter as well.
I disagree "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" to me means that a satanist couple who neglects a child and lets it die, a christian couple who do the same must suffer the same secular punishment. The courts should not take into account the religion of the couple. This was child cruelty and the fact that they think they were right because of religion has nothing to do with it.
It would be interesting to see the case law on Jehovah's Witnesses and Christian Scientists on the issues like parents' refusing to allow their children blood transfusions - I suspect there are no winning cases - there religious beliefs do not trample on the welfare of a child - however they will uphold an adult's right to refuse treatment even if it is unreasonable because of first amendment rights.
Does that mean Muslims should be allowed to honor kill their children for something like dating non-Muslims? They tend to get sent to jail for that all the time in the United States. I don't see the girst amendment at work in those cases.
This is no different. The first amendment does not protect anybody from breaking the law whether it was a religious practice or not.
So,...in America, stiffer sentences are the norm for violent crimes...much stiffer than in most industrialised nations...EXCEPT when it comes to religion. Isn't it weird? If the crime involves religion, they get just what you said...a slap on the wrist. Is this justice for a little girl?

In my view, these people should have been convicted of first degree murder and given life in prison. Send a message to these freaks.

Just 6 months for death of their child. They should in jail for 60 years more like.

The worst thing is that given the opportunity they would do exactly the same to their surviving children. There was not a shred of remorse there.

Yeah but did you catch the mom saying "who's to say the doctors could have saved her" She is in no way accepting responsibility. Fucking people.

That's what I'm referring to in particular. My guess is any good lawyer will try to make use of this wording.
