  • Thanks man this helped. Go team Canada

  • hey thanks a lot this was the best video on this i found yet, and also encouraged me a lot too keep playing you don't look like such a dirty player i like that

  • i have a 7/16 edge and cant stop on my right side what should i do

  • @BlackSunShreders How much do you weigh? I would say that the problem isn't with the cut, since it sounds like you can stop on your left side. Yes?

  • @DreNizzo im 5"9 155lbs

  • @BlackSunShreders but ive played hockey since i was 3 just seems weird that i cant stop with this perticular edge

  • Both feet would be touching the ass! hahahaha 0:31

  • @Noobetron5001 i didn't catch that the 1st time

  • I subbed. Really appreciate you taking the time to help beginners like me out.

  • This helped a lot:) Thanks

  • 0:02 - Me.

  • @Maxstermind same

  • the best thing to do is find what radius is right for you. i got the standard 1/2" sharpening @ first and could not scrape the ice because i was digging in too much. i got my skates re-sharpened to 5/8" and it was way easier!!! Now i can stop w no prob!

  • is it harder if we sharpen our skates ? its hard for me because i sharpen my skates . standard sharpen .

and can i know why is it dangerous to do one heel and one toe stop cuz i use that to break but people says its dangerous .

  • Having a good sharp pair of skates helps a lot. The local outdoor rink here has free rentals, but they're pretty dull crappy skates.

  • This also requires you to not be afraid of falling and to have confidence in yourself

  • Great video

  • Great video, and your explanations are always very detailed and clear. Thanks for this!

  • i am starting hockey for the first time i am 14 and will be in midgets i can't hockey stop i cant even do it when you put one foot sideways and the other regular any tips

  • only good tutorial on utube for this...:P

  • Hey now i get it :D!!! Thanks! So, u use only one foot to stop and the another is cooling it :D?

  • Jeremy would you agree that once you learn and perfect how to stop you build a tremendous amount of confidence?

  • So when i try this, it's not at all smooth. Maybe my skates aren't sharp enough?

  • @mermonkey Thats happened to me and yeah you probably need them sharpened

  • @mermonkey try bending your knees more instead of standing too upright

  • Thanks

  • That was amazing I'm going in hockey... March break and I thought i wasn't going to make it because i couldn't stop :p But it really works i know how to stop now!! :D

  • thanks so much for made this tutorial. I'll try to do it. I know how to skate but just don't know how to stop. That's awesome for made this tutorial for beginner.

  • is it possible when i tie my skates all the way up (all holes) i can't bend my knees and laces are hurting me like they are cuting my leg above the ankle?

  • @16mirDa wear higher socks.

  • @aegisXcore thanks for advice,i'll try that. :)

  • I cant position my back foot correctly to do the full stop Please help

  • Im going to try it...

  • That was very helpful!!

  • DUDE, best instructional ever! Thanks so much

  • when i try to hockey stop i fall on my face :(

  • @danadana1999 Thats why you do to the ice skating place when no one is there xD

  • @MyBikeGotJacked so your saying i should skip school

  • @danadana1999 Yah man I skip every friday to go practice

  • @MyBikeGotJacked nice but if i skip school i will get expelled my school is really strict, even if you're 5 minutes late you get detention for a week

  • @danadana1999 god damn

  • @MyBikeGotJacked ITS THE WORST SCHOOL EVER

  • I've always wondered, do you need to have your legs spread apart when stopping? If so, is there a difference between having a wide or narrow stance?

  • 0:04 yea that's me

  • does this work for inline skates?

  • @stanley95300 yeah it does work i do roller hockey on inline skates

  • did that fall hurt at the beginning

  • ... it feels like there is no edge at all in the left skate blade. I have had the skates sharpened numerous times and still same feeling. I'm thinking I should just buy brand new skates. Any ideas?

  • I'm 15 and i have never played hockey, however I went ice skating the other day and found out that I was a lot better than I thought... So should I try to play hockey or would it be to late??

  • @dhopss Go for it! Im 20 and regrets that i never began playing hockey earlier! Now im going to public skating rinks and just practicing skating and puck shooting and so on to maybe be able to play in a minor league :) So just go for it, it is never too late!

  • @dhopss Im 15 too. I decided to play hokcey at 14. I play for my school team and fortunately they are all very nice, they accepted me and now every week I go to practice and they teach me how to get better, so im getting better every time. Sometimes i get to play a couple of shifts in games. So its never too late, as long as youre commited and love the game, Go for it!

But be very careful, Hockey is an expensive sport, once youre in and u buy all your equipment, you cant quit.

  • I was putting too much pressure! This helped me alot!!! Thanks! And I'm from minnesota so skating is a necessity haha

  • i can only stop with one leg and i stop but when i stop i keep sliding should i keep like that or try it again

  • i was trying to learn how to stop for ages and i've been getting pretty frustrated but then i found your video and now i know how to do it! it was so helpful! THANK YOU SO MUCH you made my day! :)

  • how can still learn if it is no wall there?

  • in my city is our a speed skate road and this is the road for the kids and other guys they will skate but there are no walls they i can hold.

how can still learn if it is no wall there??

    thanks for help

  • wait do you lean forward or back????

  • How long does it take to like master both skating and stopping? Thx

  • This guy, I didn't catch your name sorry, is like the nicest, most helpful person in any instructional video I've ever watched. Really down to earth (ice lol). Thank you!

  • @superfizzyblue Awww shucks thanks! It's Jeremy by the way :D I try to make the videos easy to understand and no fluff

  • Can i lean how to skate with roller skates

  • @musicMan1445 ya thats how i learned and now i fly down the ice

  • hey when i just started skating i could stop perfect but then i got a new pair of skates and in order for me 2 stop i have 2 drag my back foot. when i try a 2 foot stop the front skate catches and i go flying off even though i am trying 2 stop on my inside blade

  • OMG...q.q

  • allegheny badgers socks?

  • That thrilling moment when you spend the whole time falling and then finally do the hockey stop without falling on your ass XD haha

  • THANNK YOOUU ! that helped soo muucchhh ! :)

  • what font did you use for the title in the video "how to hockey stop" because i like it however the w sticks out like a sore thumb

  • hey on the leg that had the weigh do i use the outside or inner edge? Thanks im going to the Hockey rink today, first time on ice. Thanks to your videos ill be able to skate somewhat.

  • great videos mate but thats not a full hockey stop. you spread your legs and use both skates the inside edge of your back foot and the outside edge of your front foot.

  • hockey stop just doesn't happen to me ! :(

  • @candyfeehily I know the feeling! :(

  • Thank you, Mr. Attractive.

  • Nice this helped me way more than what I was taught

  • When I a kid I always stopped like 0:02 that :DD

  • good job

  • I know I don't have to say this but this'll have you understand why I can't do this; I'm 11 and I can stop on my left perfectly but when I try to stop on my right it's like I don't have enough power and my skate doesn't shave any ice. Do you have any tips for this?

  • thanks alot to this video i know how to hockey stop now!! ((:

  • thanks man this helped me. im 13 and just starting hockey and everybodys telling me i cant do it. this vid helped me alot. thanks

  • either its a mini rink or a screwed up camera

  • ha lol the beginning part

  • thank you. very helpful

  • @howtohockeydotcom Hey guys, I had a quick question for you. I just got a pair of used hockey skates today, and I read your diagram of the blade thats supposed to be a half-moon shape. The problem I have is that my skate's blades are completely flat. Should I get them sharpened?

  • @xxaimpiratexx YES!! a flat runner isn't gonna do anything but bounce your head off the ice... no fun. :)

  • @xxaimpiratexx Yeah definitely. But having too edges sharp & too big of a hollow between the edges makes it really tough to stop if you're a beginner, as I found out. When you get them sharpened, ask for 3/4 inch hollow. Any less will make it tough to learn to hockey stop.

  • @KruNae try doing a t-stop or search it up

  • Would this work on rollerblades if not can you make a video or tell me how?

  • The best youtube vid I've seen so far on how to really hockey stop. Thanks! (plus you're cute)

  • No one talks about how to teach outside edge control while stopping.

  • I wish I could get the whole rink to myself one day.

  • Could I do the hockey stop using figure skates?

  • @jerome1470 Yes, you can. It's actually a requirement for ISI Gamma/Delta levels.

  • This is why I love Canadians... GREAT VIDEO!

  • i live in australia so i didnt really get a chance to learn to skate when i was younger and ive never been able to hockey stop. after watching your vids i see what i was doing wrong, im going to the rink tonight and will give it a go. Thanks

  • I was defenitely that dude at the beginning of last year. Still don't have it down quite pat but my left-sided hockey stop has come a long way, hopefully by this time next year I'll have it crisp on both sides. Yeah, and you guys really are the best on youtube -being from AZ where ice doesn't exist you channel is a great place for pointers. Thank you!

  • I can only stop on one foot, if I turn to the left and stop on my right my left foot sort of hangs around in the air, should I keep working on learning to shave the ice with it and then just stick it down?

  • @BoughtInBloodeZine That is exactly what you should do, start just learning how to shave ice with the one foot, then once you are comfortable and balanced start using both feet!

  • When i try this, I turn to the Right as i am left footed but i either over spin or if i am near the wall I just turn to the right and bang in to it with my toes, I have only tried it for 1 ice skating session so far though, How can i stop myself over spinning or doing this other thing?

  • @fenojack yeah pretty closely related, that's what I thought to, since I go skiing every once in a while.

  • when i lean back, i keep going back and end up on my butt :|

  • is the foot behind your foot that your stopping with supposed to shave ice while your stopping to?

  • Sweetness this really helps. For most people it seemslike stopping left using the right foot to shave the ice is harder.

For me it's because when I turn to go backwards I always turn left uing that right foot to turn around. So when trying to stop I naturally wanna spin around instead of shave and stop. It just takes practice you'll eventually get the feel for it.

  • @howtohockeydotcom how do you sharpen your blades? they sound EXTREMELY sharp.

  • this is great. is there a website?

  • i want to hockey stop but on figure skates. is it different?

  • So you shave the ice? I'm afraid to do this.. dont wanna miss the ice and slice my friend (i might go skating this weekend for the first time ever to see if i wanna get skating lessons, I can't pay for hockey, so it will just be for fun)

  • Very helpful instructions! Thank you!!

  • so is it like skiing?

  • I seem to be having the same problem as Mr iBlobs23 here. I've got no problem breaking with my right foot, but when it comes to my left foot it seems the angle is so wrong, I usually just fall down...

  • I can do the hockey stop but I think somethings awkward when I'm doing it, it's like my right foot scraping the ice real good which is my front foot but my left foot doesn't, it's scrape the ice by the time I almost stop. Do you have any video here that I can power up my left foot for the hockey stop? advices?

  • LOL the dude just comes out of nowhere and runs into boards.. i can tell hes a beginner :P

  • My hockey skates are much more sharp,

    what to do?

    Thanks for the video

    xD

  • If youre a beginner that doesn't know how to stop (I'm not, I'm really good haha) wouldn't learning how to T brake be better? Hockey stops took me a bit to learn, and there was no way I could have done them when I was a beginner.

  • thank you again, so much sense now.

  • i can stop only with one skate thats my right but my left skate i have a problem stopping with that one? what do i do to stop with that leg ?

  • This video is really good I watch it time and time again to make sure when I do try it I do it right. So for the first time today I tried it and got it after a few times so thanks for your video it really helped!! :D

    Alysha

  • you guys rock i was at prarie winds park and i was playing a game with my freinds and

the puck was leading to a small little girl and i didnt know what to do but stop and i did it it was awesome thank you guys so much .

  • sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but is it better to have your skates razor sharp or rather dull?...i've been trying to stop but every time i do my front skate kind of ,,bites''the ice and i end up falling...am i putting to much weight on it?

  • @Sadxtyc93

Personal preference. Usually for beginners it's much easier to have them pretty blunt, because a sharp edge digs in too much into the ice, making you stop quicker and can throw you off balance easier.

I usually get my skates sharpened and spend a good 10 minutes blunting the blades, I don't like sharp skates.

  • ok hi i'm 13 years old and i live in the UK where ice hockey isn't big, i wanted to ask if i were to start ice skating now is it a good time to learn? like ice skating in general?

  • @1991teamjacob yep, I'm 22 and am finding it hard even though my brother plays hockey!

  • @calumsensible cool thx

    :D

  • @1991teamjacob but NEVER EVER hire skates. EVER.

  • @calumsensible ok but i gotta ask yeah it makes sense but why?

  • @1991teamjacob they are almost never sharp enough and people abuse them, plus, if you buy your own skates they mould to YOUR foot which makes them easier to use and more comfortable. Plus, they are in good condition (provided you look after them) and you get used to them so it's not a fresh experience every time.

  • @calumsensible yeah k thx

  • Hey i can nvr seem to use my right foots edge. I don't think I'm putting weight on it could u help teach me why this is ?

  • Is this also possible with those noob iceskates you can buy in any stores, or is this only meant for hockey skates?

  • going to try this now, if i dont reply with how I did, I've wiped out and bled to death on the Ice :(

  • @Allaboutgaming11 I'm not to sure, I probably learned when I was 4 years old. The more you practice the faster you will learn.

  • @howtohockeydotcom what blades do u have

  • i cant find a good video of how to turn

  • good video it really helped me

  • This helpedd me loads dude.

    thanks heaps(;

  • this how to is perfect.... the rest are to short and dont realy explain every step.

  • hockey.com im learning to skate and i cant get to stop and backwards. Can you make a for complete idoits video. And also when i try to glde my skates come together and maks me fall. PLEASE RESPOND AND HELP

  • My teacher's from Canada, and it's pretty obvious to me that Canadians learn to skate before they learn how to crawl (on all fours)

  • stoping with the left flank :D

  • subbed and favourited, i would love to see u upload more how to videos on ice skating/hockey :D keep up the good work!

  • He's hot.

  • you guys should teach backward crossovers next. ive been playing D and for about the past couple weeks ive been trying it during pick up games and busting my ass :)

  • @nelsoncards the only way i got better was practice and lots of it.this might sound really stupid but my theory (and it might be wrong) is you hardly ever skate backwards so the muscles you use to go forwards are more developed so you have to work at developing the muscles you use to go backwards i was crap at skating backwards at first but i have got better over time hope this helps but ask someone really knowledgable just to make sure :)

  • @billboy1616 thats the bad part. i just love going to pick up games and doing what im comfortable with. ofcourse like with anything you have to do what your not good at.

  • @nelsoncards yeah tell me about it :D I never made the team i trained with because apart from not being good enough no matter how much i tried i could only stop with my left leg leading and never the other way round . too much skating in rinks before hockey training i guess

  • @billboy1616 yeah i just got used to using my other foot to stop.

but i only use that one foot sadly lol, and use the other as a guide.

  • Easton S17's chika chika yeh yeh!

  • Great thanks ! That's so easy to practice. Very simple way of putting it !

  • You guys are by far the best on youtube

  • @Tehnub33 Why thank you :D

  • @howtohockeydotcom good video it really helped me thank you

  • @howtohockeydotcom my feet go inward in skates ? what can i do? ty them at the anckle too?

  • @manxxx95 It is probably just because you do not have the ankle support from your muscles yet. For added support you could put some tape around the ankles, but over time your muscles will build up and you will learn how to stand properly in skates, it takes time so try to skate as often as you can.

  • @howtohockeydotcom oky tyvm ;) i skate for like a year,,but when i got back on the ice this year i couldnt do the hokey stop :( i was so pissed of now ill try your advice tomorrow hope it works, last years i was a pro at it

  • I was always told on D to find the guy with the puck and use HIM to stop. Boom!

  • @secti0n31 hahaha
