Everything now days is fixed up in the studio with autotune etc. Back then you either had to be able to really sing or just sit down! The only person I have heard in many years that compares is Elliot Yamine, that boy has it.

He had 'I Love the Lord he Heard my Cry' on one of this albums. To Be Young, Gifted and Black was a song that was song both in church and out of church back in the day. the little ghetto boy ripped the astrodome apart, they had to replaster the ceiling after that last note,,,,,,,,,daaaaaaaammmmmmmnnnnn dat boy had the pipes, and the best ear for timing I have ever encountered, he is so on that he bleeds even with every instrument behind him so well, that it sounds like each musician is playing a solo simultaneously, This just don't happen no more.

@arlto1 wow, i never heard or thought of the effect that music can have in this way. i have always been drawn to melancholy music like donny but somehow found a joy in the pain, even when the subject was unfamiliar to me. donny is one of my favorites of all time and i've always felt the overwhelming weight of despair that tormented his soul, yet i am always inspired by hearing him. thank u for this insight.

This song is it. He put it down every time he opened his mouth to sing. His voice reaches and hits the emotions its meant to touch. Thank you for the information. I do own my share of Hathaway cd's including These songs for you which has many of my faves on there. I'm really looking for any footage or possible live performances. As for how I got turned on to Donny, heard song for you years ago on the radio and a close friend shared the same affection for Mr. Hathaways music. This friend had a lot more knowledge of his work and they blessed me.

Donny was not influenced by gospel, he continued to sing gospel. One of his first hits was Put your hand in the hand of the man from Galalee. He had 'I Love the Lord he Heard my Cry' on one of this albums. To Be Young, Gifted and Black was a song that was song both in church and out of church back in the day. I think he always meant it to be known that he knew the Lord.
