I have no problem discussing these matters with someone who disagress with me or with someone from the other side. Thank you for keeping this civil, rather than resorting to mudslinging. This is the kind of discussion that leaders of the United States and Russia need to have.
The stability of a region depends on BALANCE of power.
ie. Both NATO and Russia has nukes aimed at each other. No one side would dare make a move for fear of being mutually destroyed.
However, when one side has a defense against the other, it changes this balance. When that happens, the side with the advantage can do what they want with impunity.
The US can conceivably make up some excuse (as they often do) to influence the region, and possibly invade Russia.
@docsein1 We're not interested in attacking Russia. Russia seems to think that they're still the Soviet. They're not, they should get over it. The Cold War is over. They need to just move on. I would consider NATO membership for them if they had some serious attitude adjustments.
There are FAR better ways of moving towards peace or stability. The US can do what WORKED during the cold war; NEGOTIATE for reduction of armaments on all sides.
NEGOTIATION and BARGAINING is the ONLY way to DECREASE tensions. What the US does, again and again, is add gasoline to sparks.
Look at the facts YOURSELF. Whenever the US moves into a foreign region with their military, tensions go UP not down. Violence, or the treat of violence, goes UP not down.
@docsein1 Well while NATO membership isn't likely, cooperation of some sort is still needed. Since the United States and Russia together have something like 95% of the world's nuclear weapons, I think we could all see a need for the two countries to cooperate. And it's just those two countries alone. The numbers might be smaller now, due to disarmament, but it was recently that high. According to a source, those two countries had 19,500 of 20,500 warheads.
Co-operation is DEFINITELY something we can AGREE on.
But the ROOT problem is not the nuclear weapons.
The US needs to completely change its FLAWED foreign policy. They need to realize that threatening sovereign nations, spreading arms, building military bases, and sending troops and warships all over the world does NOT help ease tensions. It just forces the opposing side to tense up and become MORE hostile.

As for Poland, Russia sees it as relatively non-treatening, and with no reason to aim it's weapons at it. However, if Poland allows the shield on it's soil, it would become a strategic point in NATO, and therefore would automatically be pre-emptively targeted by Russia. NATO has the same policy.
@docsein1 It would've been a strategic point during the 1980s, but not now. Some of the former Soviet Republics stand in the way, and Poland doesn't share a border with the mainland of Russia.
Russia still sees Ukraine as a part of itself, and I think that both sides have their merit.
But more importantly, Russia is being strategically ENCIRCLED by the US controlled NATO (an entity that has always been at odds with Russia). The EU on it's West, and US Allies in the Mid-east in the South-West and East. From Russia's point of view, Ukraine, like Poland, is just a way for NATO to tighten the neus around it's neck.
In CONTRAST, the US influences events all over the world, BUT since they don't live in these places, they can just pick-up and leave, if anything goes wrong. They can even declare victory when they get home. While the parties in the region are left to suffer the consequences.
@docsein1 Actually, Iraq is now experiencing democracy. It may be years until they can finally live in harmony, as there's still daily attacks by jihadists and other extremists. Afghanistan, I don't know about. The country is extremely poverty-stricken and war torn. They were in Civil War, even before NATO invaded. I honestly wish we could do something to help Afghanistan, with regards to poverty. Like with Iraq, we kicked out a terrible government, and gave them something much better.

HOWEVER, there is a FUNDIMENTAL difference with what the CSTO does and what NATO does.
The CSTO sales (as far as I know) are to nations within their region (regional co-operation). Any ramifications of such acts are felt by ALL parties in the regions, INCLUDING the CSTO countries themselves.
ie. If China ruins their relationship with Taiwan over an arms sale with Russia, China would suffer the consequences as well.
@docsein1 A country can sell arms to any country it wants, assuming that the buyer is not under an embargo. Iran and Syria supplying arms to Hezbollah and Hamas is another story.
@docsein1 Iran has Russian-made aircraft and air defense systems. They also have ballistic missiles from North Korea that can strike Eastern Europe. Syria has Russian guns. So if you're saying that selling arms and other types of military hardware has geopolitical ramifications, then I don't see why you're not condemning what I just pointed out.
Just think what the US would say if the Russians or Chinese moved military hardware into Cuba, or Mexico. No nation wants a build-up of arms on their front door, or within striking distance of their lands. And those who ignore such provocation pay the price, as PROVEN by history time and time, and time again.

That should remind anyone who saw that of the Cuban Missile Crisis. But this is different. The Soviets put ballistic missiles containing nuclear warheads in them in Cuba. The current situation we're talking about is a missile defense system. The plan is to put something like 10 interceptor missiles in Poland. And these aren't offensive weapons.
The US government seems to have different opinions than you. Nations can SAY what they want on the surface, but their ACTIONS to move military hardware into bordering nations speak for themselves.
What NATO is doing is analogous to parking a sniper in Russia's front lawn, ready to take you out at a moments notice. This is also the motivation behind the incident with Georgia.
@docsein1 Other that the small region of Kaliningrad, Russia does not share a border with Poland. Infact, I'd think if anything, this missile defense system would protect Kaliningrad too, which should be something the Russians like. What interest does NATO have in that tiny enclave? Nothing, so Russia just needs to chill out.

Well, these kind of things are difficult to say. Military strength comes from many factors:
Technology, the reliance on technology, manpower, quality, force multipliers, leadership, asymmetric warfare capabilities, and MANY other aspects that are not part of the military, but is essential in its function and effectiveness.
So I find it kinda meaningless to speculate on such things.
4. NATO's interest all over the world is STRATEGIC.
A nation doesn't need to have resources or a booming economy to be strategic. It only needs to offer a geographic location within missile or aircraft range of it's opponents strategic assets.
It's like chess, you don't need to kill any pieces to pose a large strategic treat to your opponent. You just need to be in the right positions.
3. Why ON EARTH would you think that Russia wants NATO, currently an ADVERSARY, to "protect" Kaliningrad? More over, why would NATO NEED to protect Kaliningrad against it's own country?
Would the US need, or be happy, if China was "PROTECTING" New York City?
@docsein1 What I was trying to say is that all of Europe would be shielded from missile attacks. That would mean that no land in the area could subject to missile strikes, including the Kaliningrad Region.
Exactly, all of EUROPE. It doesn't include Russia.
And even if it did, it would NOT help Russia since this defensive "ON / OFF" switch would be controlled by the US and NATO, a current adversary of Russia.
And as I've said before, this changes the geopolitical balance in the region, pushing up the tension and instability. This is exactly the kind of thing that fueled the last arms race.

A missile defense shield would only be a problem when BOTH OPPOSING sides have missiles.
The US would probably not have a problem with a Russian controlled shield in Central America as long as:
1. Central America is NOT an adversary.
2. Central America does NOT have nukes.
So a Russian controlled shield in Central America, IN ITSELF, would not be a big deal. But combine that with an ADVERSARIAL, NUCLEAR armed Central America, then it becomes a HUGE deal.

I wouldn't have a problem with a Russian missile defense shield in Central America, since nothing would be pointed at us. Iran has been placing ICBMs in Venezuela, but that's a different story.
1. Regardless of how small the border is, it allows for military asset posturing and movement before, and during, a conflict.
2. Modern weapons have long ranges. A country can have enormous significance in a conflict as long as it's property is within range of important strategic assets regardless of whether it physically shares a border with an opponent.
This is especially the case with Russia, since Poland is within 800km of Moscow.
@docsein1 I recall Russia did offer to operate the missile defense system jointly with NATO, and it was turned down. I don't know why though. It's looking like that if NATO and the United States at least sign a legal form ensuring that the shield is not aimed at Russia, which it isn't, then they'd be ok with it. The goal is to shield Europe from possible future missile strikes from Iran, which has been very clear from the beginning.
Well, again, the US can SAY that's it's ONLY for dealing with Iran, but actions speak louder than words.
I have no doubt that Iran is certainly PART of the reason, but from Russia's point of view, they can't just take the US's word for it, especially considering the track record and history of US foreign policy.

They still possess the weaponry to make such a feat possible, numerically speaking. The US is the only member of NATO that could take on Russia directly. Even if all of Europe and Turkey teamed up, they would not get far and they would ensure their own nuclear destruction. Also, if the US/Israel attack Iran, NATO will dissolve overnight.
Poland needs to develop its own nuclear program, end of story. If NATO and/or the USA is not prepared to defend Poland then Poland has every right to develop its weapons of mass destruction in order to defend its own people against Russia. Of course, it was not only because of Russian army but also because of many reasons - who argues? But it was. At first, 123 years of Russian Empire`s rule in Poland on 1000 history is a long term and also you forget the communist Poland was under control of the Soviets so include the Soviet time too.
Independence of Poland in 1918 wasn`t for a long time because Poland become communist and under control of the Soviets after the WW2 so 1918 doesn`t matter. As I see, your interpretation of history involves only offences so you have a victim`s complex which is sad. Poland is satelite nation and it was a toy in the Soviet - German game as it is a toy in the new Russian - American game.
The irony is that Poland doesn`t understand what it is doing because of the victim`s complex and the wish to revenge Russia. The stability of a region depends on BALANCE of power.
ie. Both NATO and Russia has nukes aimed at each other. No one side would dare make a move for fear of being mutually destroyed.
However, when one side has a defense against the other, it changes this balance. When that happens, the side with the advantage can do what they want with impunity.
The US can conceivably make up some excuse (as they often do) to influence the region, and possibly invade Russia.

Since the United States and Russia together have something like 95% of the world's nuclear weapons, I think we could all see a need for the two countries to cooperate. And it's just those two countries alone. The numbers might be smaller now, due to disarmament, but it was recently that high. According to a source, those two countries had 19,500 of 20,500 warheads.

As for Poland, Russia sees it as relatively non-treatening, and with no reason to aim it's weapons at it. However, if Poland allows the shield on it's soil, it would become a strategic point in NATO, and therefore would automatically be pre-emptively targeted by Russia. NATO has the same policy.

But more importantly, Russia is being strategically ENCIRCLED by the US controlled NATO (an entity that has always been at odds with Russia). The EU on it's West, and US Allies in the Mid-east in the South-West and East. From Russia's point of view, Ukraine, like Poland, is just a way for NATO to tighten the neus around it's neck.

Afghanistan, I don't know about. The country is extremely poverty-stricken and war torn. They were in Civil War, even before NATO invaded. I honestly wish we could do something to help Afghanistan, with regards to poverty. Like with Iraq, we kicked out a terrible government, and gave them something much better.

HOWEVER, there is a FUNDIMENTAL difference with what the CSTO does and what NATO does.
The CSTO sales (as far as I know) are to nations within their region (regional co-operation). Any ramifications of such acts are felt by ALL parties in the regions, INCLUDING the CSTO countries themselves.
ie. If China ruins their relationship with Taiwan over an arms sale with Russia, China would suffer the consequences as well.

A missile defense shield would only be a problem when BOTH OPPOSING sides have missiles.
The US would probably not have a problem with a Russian controlled shield in Central America as long as:
1. Central America is NOT an adversary.
2. Central America does NOT have nukes.
So a Russian controlled shield in Central America, IN ITSELF, would not be a big deal. But combine that with an ADVERSARIAL, NUCLEAR armed Central America, then it becomes a HUGE deal.

1. Regardless of how small the border is, it allows for military asset posturing and movement before, and during, a conflict.
2. Modern weapons have long ranges. A country can have enormous significance in a conflict as long as it's property is within range of important strategic assets regardless of whether it physically shares a border with an opponent.
This is especially the case with Russia, since Poland is within 800km of Moscow.

It's looking like that if NATO and the United States at least sign a legal form ensuring that the shield is not aimed at Russia, which it isn't, then they'd be ok with it. The goal is to shield Europe from possible future missile strikes from Iran, which has been very clear from the beginning.

They still possess the weaponry to make such a feat possible, numerically speaking. The US is the only member of NATO that could take on Russia directly. Even if all of Europe and Turkey teamed up, they would not get far and they would ensure their own nuclear destruction. Also, if the US/Israel attack Iran, NATO will dissolve overnight.

At the beginning of 19th century, the bigger part of Poland become a part of the Russian Empire though smaller parts also were within Germany and Austria but the biggest part was within Russia. Of course, it was not only because of Russian army but also because of many reasons - who argues? But it was. At first, 123 years of Russian Empire`s rule in Poland on 1000 history is a long term and also you forget the communist Poland was under control of the Soviets so include the Soviet time too.

Independence of Poland in 1918 wasn`t for a long time because Poland become communist and under control of the Soviets after the WW2 so 1918 doesn`t matter. As I see, your interpretation of history involves only offences so you have a victim`s complex which is sad. Poland is satelite nation and it was a toy in the Soviet - German game as it is a toy in the new Russian - American game.

Nobody in Poland belives that Russia could attack us so instead of threatening you should just TALK using ARGUMENTS. Threats work in the opposite way. After russians threatments the number of ppl who support the missle deal increases. It's like "f*k Russians, they won't tell us anymore what to do".
