    R.I.P MAESTRO!!

    FROM PERU!

  • the last high note is edited. He did not souded like that.

  • bravo placido...

  • Domingo's voice has a pinched quality to it here...and he just barely made that high B. Simply put, he does not sing this as well as Pavarotti!

  • I agree with barou80 Pavarotti's Italian pronunciation is more natural and he has a certain timbre in his voice that is uniquely pleasant and soulful.

  • Pavarotti is a god. Perhaps you should spend less time with *your* tongue sticking out. And flapping.

  • After all, he IS Italian. Haaa.

  • its werid it seems to make every 1 quiver and shake these songs!!

  • Agreed with bondal...Placido Domingo owns Pavaroti...

  • Sí.

  • uh! =)

  • ...

  • Muy bello... :)

  • just great. i love this one. it quivers me.

  • simplemente espléndido!

  • Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Jose Cura and Richard Leech all sing this aria better than Pavarotti. Too him not holding the high not, Domingo sang what is in the score, which is that the B is almost the grace note and the resounding note 'the A' should be the held note.

  • Jose Carreras and Jose Cura....i must say hohohoho...you must be a deaf guy.

  • Another outstanding performance of perhaps the most beloved music in opera.

  • Totally with you Bladiyo.

  • i Think this is the performance ever made of nessum dorma, pavarotti is excelent, but he never transmit feelings as Placido here, he is great here

  • Sounds great, but this is Pavarotti's piece, period. You can argue all you want, but it's very simple, the world has decided it. End of story.

Domingo didn't even hold the high note.

  • that Doming note was a yell

  • The note (B) shouldn't be hold, look at Puccini's partiture!!! The world has decided, maybe, but since when the world is known for wise decisions? Pavarotti had a beautiful voice, but he was maybe the worst interpreter of operas: he didn't sing the author's opera, but his own personal version. This is, over all, wrong. There's no more to be said.

  • amazing.. incredible

  • muy bueno, pero suena medio chica la voz no?? estaria medio enfermo....Igual excelente actuacion

  • i prefer pavarotti just for one thing, his italian doesn't sound weird like carreras or domingo, but maybe only the italian can understand this..anyway fantastic

  • Two things: first, Domingo was originally a baritone, so the anything beyond the A above the Middle C would be at least somewhat tenuous for him. Second, Domingo was not physically well at that time, and that probably affected his performance. Nonetheless, Calaf is a role for the heldentenors(tenors with a baritonal sound, especially lower and mid range),and Domingo is a heldentenor.

  • Franco Corelli, one of the greatest Calaf's was not really a heldentenor...domingo scoops and swoops hiw way through this aria, with only modest passion, and little beauty in my opinion...still better than most today...

  • Hi,

I practiced opera for almost a year.

I was first catagorized as a Dramatic Soprano. Since my vocal coach moved away, I have a new coach and she has catagorized me a mezzo-soprano. The thing I was hoping that you would help me with, I have a problem with switching from chest voice to head voice. I have terrible allergies, I've gone to the doctor. Have had things prescribed to me, and I know for a fact that allergies is the culprit to my problem. Is there anything that you suggest?

  • where is the break at? note wise

  • Great, this is his role. Pavarotti is not Lyric Tenor.

  • This is the best version on YouTube. Listen to them all back-to-back-to-back and you'll quickly see why Pavarotti and Domingo are head and shoulders above everyone else. Some might say that Domingo's last note is a problem here, but there are lots of other notes in this aria too, and most tenors tend to forget about them and wait for the finale to get serious. Domingo's, from first to last, is best.

  • ehm...the contrary is true: Puccini wrote this aria for a voice exactly like Placido's, not Pavarotti nor Carreras as neither have/had the heft that the role requires. Also, this is a live performance...I doubt Carreras could ever do better than Domingo in the opera house,so you must be thinking of a studio recording.Apples and oranges. Also, while this aria has come to be identified with Pavarotti, he sang it mostly in concerts, in front of a mike. It's a hell of a different ball game!:~)

  • Well I don't think people wrote for voices like Pavarotti's, he has a very unique tone. The vocal qualities of Pavarotti and Carreras may have been better than Domingo when they were in their prime, but they were short lived times.

I think Domingo does a terrific job, wonderful vocal line, nice full projection, great phrasing.

  • It's not bad but this does not come close to Pavarotti's version. Also Carreras' one is better. this kind of aria just is not written for a voice like Placido's

  • balony

  • yeah right...

  • Neither Pavarotti nor Carerras, both lyric tenors, had the vocal heft to do justice to the part of Calaf (Pav's admitted this in public before himself). Domingo is more appropriate for the role and Corelli, who had a much bigger and heavier, dramatic voice than Pav or Carreras, was perhaps the best of all.

  • Pavarotti, to me, is pure effortless, wonderful power, while domingo, also to me, is pure suave and sensuality. And he can REALLY sing, too!

  • Placido is the greatest!

  • Bravo! Very nice indeed.

  • Gorgeous vocalism although Mr. Domingo doesn't always know what to do with his arms. The tenor reaches the high B natural at the end but it is not the best I have heard.

  • Oh, I love this song! It's one of my favorite songs ever! This man has a fabulous voice as well! :D

  • singing the high A's sitting up! that is pretty hard. never get tired of this performance

  • it's not really that hard, it's just training...a good singer should be able to sing in any position...opera often demands it!

  • My favorite tenor aria. LVOE I
