I live right outside of Downtown L.A., but my parents' paranoia for my safety has kept me from fully exploring the area. Since my bus ride home goes through Old Chinatown, I recognized the street in the video and my day at jury duty allowed me to visit city hall and the sunken Mall - ever since I was a kid I'd been wondering what the colorful structure was. Now I really want to grab my bike and explore Downtown more thoroughly.
I am exactly like you ,except without all the parent paranoia . I explored pretty much all of L.A including downtown on my Skateboard. I can map quest all of L.A in my head including the bad parts. lol
The video brought back a ton of memories. I lived in a house only 2 blocks north of the Bob Baker Puppet Theater in the Echo Park neighborhood back in the early 1960s. I also used to go to Chinatown and Cliftons. What a cool video!!
I have been going to clifton's and china town since i was hours old. I was born at the french hospital in down town next to china town. This tour by Charles Phoenix has a very special place in my hart. Thank you for making this show available via youtube.
WOW! Wow. I didn't realize, that day in Panama City, FL, that the nice man my husband & I gave beads and dubloons to after the mardi gras parade, was THIS talented and insanely interesting person!! You are a riot. We are going to have to come to LA just to see you again. Do you still do the tours?
Very cool. Reminds me of Reyner Banham's "Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles" video. Look for it on Google Video, but he did a travelogue of the city in 1971 (?) and he uncovers amazing things too.
LA is a very cool city. SO much history that most people never get around to discovering because they're too busy trying to get discovered themselves.
But born-here Angelinos know and video's like Charlie's do this city a great service.
I never thought I'd want to see LA but now I do. Charles, in your wit, you pit warmth in presentation and show humanity in the city which is not a place, but many diversities. I can imagine LA to be a nice place to live now.
I believe this wideo is a must see for everyone (LA FANS)! Such great information on LA, from the past. Do you have information regarding the Los Angeles Greyhound Station in downtown LA? I think it would be neat to see information about the station. Again thanks for the great videos you have shared with us all who LOVE LA!
He is SO funny! I wish he would come on vacation with us! I have a couple of his books and I can't believe I just happened to see this video...brilliant stuff. BIG fan... thanks for the memories!!
This video is absolutly the most beautiful, magical, special video ive ever seen. Even though ive never been on the tour i felt like i got to know charles pheonix, hes an amazing human being with an amazing cause. Great video. You should do a video about Disneyland now.
I live NW Indiana but I love LA and go out there every chance I get. This video brought back lots of memories of places I visited there. Great Job!! Thanks,
Wow...most people that visit LA don't hit the obscure spots that he covered in the video. I'm glad you enjoyed our City for what it really is...a hidden treasure.
Very cool. Thanks for capturing this character and his entertaining perspective. The melancholy music kind of seemed to make him out to be a sad figure, though. Also, you cheated with the use of the footage of the Seattle "Century 21" monorail. :-) (Ah well, at least Disney's were based on the Alweg design.)
Oops. The bus interiors were of the old bus, rounded roof with rounded split rear window. Exteriors are of a newer bus. The old one barely made it up the hill to Carroll Ave.
I went on this tour during its first run and this is a very accurate video about the entire experience. I'm so glad I got to go before I left L.A. Great work!
