  • Echo Park<3

  • Good Lord...how long is this tour??

  • bin there done tat

  • I was hopping that it was Phoenix Arizona.

  • I live right outside of Downtown L.A., but my parents' paranoia for my safety has kept me from fully exploring the area. Since my bus ride home goes through Old Chinatown, I recognized the street in the video and my day at jury duty allowed me to visit city hall and the sunken Mall - ever since I was a kid I'd been wondering what the colorful structure was. Now I really want to grab my bike and explore Downtown more thoroughly.

  • I am exactly like you ,except without all the parent paranoia . I explored pretty much all of L.A including downtown on my Skateboard. I can map quest all of L.A in my head including the bad parts. lol

  • Excellent tour.... Charles deserves a national heritage award!

  • Great video!

    Love it!!

    George Vreeland Hill

  • very cool video nice work

  • Wow! So nice. Thank you!

  • I cannot wait to go on the next tour. I've been waiting a YEAR to get my calendar free. Hurry up Charles!

  • i been here b4

  • Great video! It was really well-edited and gave us a wonderful taste of Charles' tours.

I think his next one's in November. Wish I had the cash for it.

  • I love L.A. too

    lol

  • The video brought back a ton of memories. I lived in a house only 2 blocks north of the Bob Baker Puppet Theater in the Echo Park neighborhood back in the early 1960s. I also used to go to Chinatown and Cliftons. What a cool video!!

  • That must have been amazing to see everything develop in and around Disney.

  • ok...that video was weird...but it must of took you millions of years to edit it!!!

    jk jk jk

  • I am super impressed by this video and upset I missed the tour

    also on a sad note

Sammy (the Carol Ave dog) has died

If you decide to do this again - please let me know

  • I have been going to clifton's and china town since i was hours old. I was born at the french hospital in down town next to china town. This tour by Charles Phoenix has a very special place in my hart. Thank you for making this show available via youtube.

  • wow, that was awesome. thanks for uploading.

  • WOW! Wow. I didn't realize, that day in Panama City, FL, that the nice man my husband & I gave beads and dubloons to after the mardi gras parade, was THIS talented and insanely interesting person!! You are a riot. We are going to have to come to LA just to see you again. Do you still do the tours?

  • Hey, that was really nice!

  • Los Angeles is my favorite city in america.

  • Except that Los Angeles isn't a city - it's a fricken HUGE suburb

  • Does anyone know what the music is playing through this clip, after the violins bit

  • i live in a loft in downtown los angeles...and i never get tired of the sights down here! great video!

  • i want to go to LA :((((

  • Very cool. Reminds me of Reyner Banham's "Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles" video. Look for it on Google Video, but he did a travelogue of the city in 1971 (?) and he uncovers amazing things too.

LA is a very cool city. SO much history that most people never get around to discovering because they're too busy trying to get discovered themselves.

But born-here Angelinos know and video's like Charlie's do this city a great service.

  • Wonderful! Nicely done. Thanks.

  • i prefer new york, i'm brazilian

  • I live in La county 30 min. from downtown

  • They did Cliftons....now this is a great tour!!

  • i'm brazilian and i want to visit this town. In my opinion, LA is the more incredible city in USA

  • and why so misunderstood?

  • nice video

  • I never thought I'd want to see LA but now I do. Charles, in your wit, you pit warmth in presentation and show humanity in the city which is not a place, but many diversities. I can imagine LA to be a nice place to live now.

  • I believe this wideo is a must see for everyone (LA FANS)! Such great information on LA, from the past. Do you have information regarding the Los Angeles Greyhound Station in downtown LA? I think it would be neat to see information about the station. Again thanks for the great videos you have shared with us all who LOVE LA!

  • He is SO funny! I wish he would come on vacation with us! I have a couple of his books and I can't believe I just happened to see this video...brilliant stuff. BIG fan... thanks for the memories!!

  • and what of: the cathederal, the death star, and dodger stadium?

  • thank you so much for sharing this! i love my city and i appreciate those who try to keep its history alive.

  • Great stuff. Big fan of Charles' work. Thank you for making a video of his tour in such a creative and interesting way. Dana Law

  • This video is absolutly the most beautiful, magical, special video ive ever seen. Even though ive never been on the tour i felt like i got to know charles pheonix, hes an amazing human being with an amazing cause. Great video. You should do a video about Disneyland now.

  • I live NW Indiana but I love LA and go out there every chance I get. This video brought back lots of memories of places I visited there. Great Job!! Thanks,

    David Welch

  • Wow...most people that visit LA don't hit the obscure spots that he covered in the video. I'm glad you enjoyed our City for what it really is...a hidden treasure.

  • Very cool. Thanks for capturing this character and his entertaining perspective. The melancholy music kind of seemed to make him out to be a sad figure, though. Also, you cheated with the use of the footage of the Seattle "Century 21" monorail. :-) (Ah well, at least Disney's were based on the Alweg design.)

  • fantastic! I live in LA, and I felt like I was seeing it new...

  • The film by itself was beautifully done, and how fantastic to see Charles Phoenix do his tour. Thank you so much for posting this for us.

  • Oops. The bus interiors were of the old bus, rounded roof with rounded split rear window. Exteriors are of a newer bus. The old one barely made it up the hill to Carroll Ave.

  • WE got a ride in a way more crappier bus than shown! Much rounder and funkier.

  • Been there, done that! It's so nice to see it again!

  • I went on this tour during its first run and this is a very accurate video about the entire experience. I'm so glad I got to go before I left L.A. Great work!

  • OUTSTANDING video. Thanks so much for this lovely piece of art.

  • I want to go on his tour SO BAD!

  • it was satisfying and mysterious, just like macaroni and cheese. and the music was perfect.

  • Bravo! I went on the tour a while back and this film totally captures the fun and energy of Charles' world!

  • love it!

  • amazing work again dude. Big fan.

  • great work~ i'm going to take his tour next weekend~*
