I haven't seen this movie, but the acting in this scene alone is incredible. When Christian is talking about Huey Lewis and the News, you can tell he's eager to get to the killing. When he's hacking away at Paul with a hatchet, he just lets all his insanity loose. Finally, when it's all over, he looks completely normal, like nothing happened. All this great acting, and yet Christian Bale wasn't even nominated for an Oscar.
This scene is one of the greatest pieces of filmmaking I have ever seen.

Dunno if anyone else noticed, but there's a definite "two-face" motif with the blood on Bale's face after he finishes his kill. I imagine that was intentional, as it sort of is a visual cue towards a major thematic and plot-oriented aspect of his character: he's a binary. In public, he's the socialite, civilized businessman, and in private he's the raving maniac, symbolized by the unclean half of his face, coated and spattered in blood.
