God Bless you too Mr. Reagan for loving our country, people and faith. We miss having one of the greatest presidents around; especially now during this most holy of season.. And I only imagine how much courage it would take someone today to give this magnificent speech praise the world's largest & most cherished faith. and like tiny Tim once said, God Bless us,everyone!!
Research? Please tell us where the US Constitution says that religion needs to be kept separate. The Constitution granted us freedom of religion and not
freedom from religion.
Hugo Black was chief justice when the "wall of separation" decision came in 1947. He was biased in that he was a former member of the Klan who hated the Catholic Church.
Because religious belief, or non-belief, is such an important part of every person's life, freedom of religion affects every individual. Religious institutions that use government power in support of themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths, or of no faith, undermine all our civil rights. Moreover, state support of an established religion tends to make the clergy unresponsive to their own people, and leads to corruption within religion itself.
Erecting the "wall of separation between church and state," therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society. We have solved, by fair experiment, the great and interesting question whether freedom of religion is compatible with order in government and obedience to the laws. And we have experienced the quiet as well as the comfort which results from leaving every one to profess freely and openly those principles of religion which are the inductions of his own reason and the
-- Thomas Jefferson, to the Virginia Baptists (1808) ME 16:320. This is his second kown use of the term "wall of separation," here quoting his own use in the Danbury Baptist letter. This wording of the original was several times upheld by the Supreme Court as an accurate description of the Establishment Clause: Reynolds (98 US at 164, 1879); Everson (330 US at 59, 1947); McCollum (333 US at 232, 1948)
Actually, you can't have freedom OF religion unless you have freedom FROM religion - it's implied. If you have to choose a religion, you don't have freedom of religion - therefore, we have freedom FROM religion as well.
Go to wikipedia and look up deism. Nearly all founding fathers were deists. In the Treaty of Tripoli, written under Washington with Jefferson's help, it states, "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." The point is that Reagan, in this speech, stepped over the line. That's all I have to say.
Fine, you can go look at the original Treaty of Tripoli for all I care. It will still say the same thing. And, while you're at it, check out a book on Deism - again, same thing. Facts are facts. Religion is myth.
@arfarf78 - I will keep you in my prayers that one day you will accept the Truth before the final judgment day. On that day you, along with everyone else, dead and alive, WILL bow your heads and bend your knees, acknowledging the our Creator in his Glorious love for us, had given his Son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross for each of each of us and to forgive our sins. He had given each of us free will choose to believe or not, but come judgment day, ALL will acknowledge Our Lord. God Bless
References to God in the Pledge of Allegiance and in our national motto were added in the 50s, not by our founders. Our founders were mostly Deists, not mainstream, practicing Christians, and referred to God only to appease the uneducated masses that needed religion to feel good. The motto, "In God we trust," has been upheld by the Supreme Court because it has "lost through rote repetition any significant religious content". The Constitution purposely does not include God or Christianity.
This would be a beautiful message coming from a minister, but it's inappropriate coming from a President. We are a country founded on freedom from religion and separation of church and state, and our President, of all people, should maintain that distinction. Also, on another note, the Christmas tree is a pagan tradition - guess Reagan didn't research that.
Religious beliefs is a matter of personal preference, same as ice cream flavors, music groups, or movies. A President urging the people to subscribe to his religious beliefs is no more unconstitutional than a President urging people to eat vanilla ice cream or watch "Avatar." It becomes unconstitutional if he tries to make it mandatory under law, e.g. Any American who doesn't listen to the Grateful Dead are enemies of the state; any American who is not a Christian is an enemy of the state, etc.
Thanks for posting this. His depth of faith and integrity is sorely missed today. God bless this nation. He was the greatest President in recent history, and he did by being true to his values. His love for God, this nation, and what America stood for guided his actions. I still miss him.
Ronald Reagan was a man of grace and class who represented the American people well. To President Reagan, America was the shining city on the hill, a beacon of hope to those living under oppressive regimes who yearned for the freedom and liberty that we Americans held dear.
NO WAY would Reagan have allowed the image of the Communist, Mao Zedong to adorn the White House Christmas tree. But then Reagan was an American who loved his country and was proud of it. HE was a TRUE leader.
I had a Christmas wish, but after consideration, it was changed. The change came about due to the fact that Obiden would be next in line... and Piglosi is #3!! God help us. I sorely miss this real man - Ronald W. Reagan.
May we all have a Conservative victory in 2010 and a Merrier Christmas next year.
USA the greatest country on the face of the earth. We have overcome many obstacles in our history and we will overcome our current state with the godless administration we have now. go out and vote and may God bless the United States of America and remember In God We Trust.
The tree is not getting devoted care by the current administration and Congress. They actually VOTED on the holy eve of Christmas. They worship gov't not God.
I've been to three services celebrating the birth of Christ between yesterday and today. And sadly none of the them expressed the meaning of Christmas as well as Ronald Reagan did in his brief comments. The world without Ronald Reagan is a sadder place.
I miss President Reagan so very much! May God grant us a new president in 2010 that will even be better for America than Reagan was, if that is possible.
Wow, watching this points out the stark contrast between the current administration's lack of gratitude, lack of greatness. Ornaments with pictures of Chairman Mao in the White House now? Never would've happened before. Let's pray that our country can return to the faith and greatness despite the current circumstances.
Wait a minute, don't you remember our president gave a fifteen minute explanation of the faith... nevermind, that was Ramadan (which he knows nothing about, because he's a Christian... don't you see him in church every Sunday, not listening, ever since he got in).
To Corky, you're not praying hard enough. Let another take his office.
Happy satanic, winter solstice voting, red/green culling and Interpol exemption in the US to us. /s
The decorations here are beautiful and understated, classy all the way!
And Reagan's calm, dignified manner, looking DIRECTLY at the camera - what a DIFFERENCE from what we are enduring now!
Reagan spent HIS Christmases in the White House so that his Secret Service detail could have time with their families - obama has to go and get "shaved ice"!
God in Heaven how I miss this PRESIDENT - His heart would BREAK if he saw what is happening now!!
Please send the Holy Spirit to strengthen us and give us the courage to stand and fight for this once-great, once-free nation! Show us the way. Give us a leader with courage to stop the Socialist, Unconstitutional usurper now residing in our White House!
We have allowed the secular takeover of our country - which has weakened us and made us easy prey for those who want to destroy this nation. Come back to us, Lord! Give our ministers courage to stand and fight for you!
"Under God" was officially incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance June 14, 1954 by a Joint Resolution of Congress amending § 7 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942. That was easy.
I miss this old cowboy more and more each passing day. Dear President Reagan, I wish you were here. The ____ we have in there now is trying to wreck everything we believe in. R.I.P. Sir.
Understand the root of 'holiday'. It's almost in plain sight ... 'holy day'. A day set apart. Christmas is a 'holy day'. Time set apart for Christ. The day was set apart long ago to honor Him and His coming. But to His people, every day is a 'holy day' because we are 'to be holy as He is holy'; we are a people set apart by Him, for Him.
Theres nothing holiday about Christmas. Christmas is about a savior who was born in Bethlehem and his name is Jesus the Christ. As a Christian we celebrate his birth every year because God (Elohim gave us His only begotten son we can received salvation. The Holiday has nothing to do with Christ but perhaps Fourth of July, Halloween, Valentines or even Washington Birthday. Holiday has nothing to do with Jesus. I love this wonderful Christmas message from our former President R.R.
@noodle666666 exactly that is always my point. if they tell me happy holidays i ask really? what holiday? forces them to say Christmas! this is what they are trying to do away with. but this is the reason this day occurs, to celebrate God mercy on all of mankind. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
DO you even know where the word CHRIST MAS came from! Go to work and not have a holiday if that is what you choose this country was founded on Christ and that is why it succeeded not because it didn't believe! Read the bible and see his wrath is coming my heart goes out to non believers I always pray for you.
An amazing man. Not afraid to be who he was. TimSPC: no one is asking you to believe... but I, for one, am pretty sick of those of you who refuse to allow us to believe. You seem to want us to fear you... to worry so much about political correctness that we become too careful about saying what's in our hearts. I choose to love you. And I'm saying so. Because Christ has written it in my heart.
For someone to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior is a God given choice someone makes. If a person refuses to accept Jesus and become a Christian, then they feel 'left out' at Christmas even after making their own choice of actions.
Since Christmas became the #1 holiday of all for so many years, those outside the body of Christ began celebrating various events at the same time so that they did not feel so 'left out' at this joyous time of year with so many activities. However, the center of attention of Christmas is still and will forever be the birth of Jesus regardless of those who choose not to participate.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The celebrations in winter were around long before Jesus. Christians just co-opted the holiday to impose their religion. Hopefully, we can reach the point where Christ is taken out of Christmas fully and we can celebrate a joyous holiday for everyone, not just the believers.
There have been those who have envied Christians and the celebration of the birth of Jesus for centuries, when all they have to do is simply receive the free gift of salvation from the One Who was absolutely sinless, the One Who gives life, forgiveness, mercy, love and goodness to anyone who will give up his or her life of evil and sin and accept His death on the cross in their behalf. Theres no greater friend than Jesus.
Thank you, Tim, you are correct. The winter solstice was long-celebrated before Christians took over the holiday to make it seem Christian and not pagan. Even the "Christmas" tree is a pagan tradition. Thank goodness there's someone else on here that does his research!
I'm sorry SPC. The "Holidays" are not the "Holidays" it is Christmas, and it is in fact actually for Christ Believers. That's why it's called CHRISTmas. Everyone else just adopted it so they can get outta doing work at this time of the year or whatever you lazy heathens do. If you non believers want to celebrate Gia or whatever, honestly I don't care but just don't confuse that not caring with you heathens co-opting the Christians Holy Day. It is a Religious Holy Day so go bow to Ra.
What was hateful? He handled other religions with grace right off the bat, then simply expressed the love meaning of Christmas. There is nothing hateful about the message of Christmas, even if you don't believe in the root meaning of it.
I was too young to remember this but WOW! This is what leaders of America SHOULD be saying. I have earned new respect for Ronald Reagan. Maybe one day we'll have another leader who doesn't hate God and America for the love of Political Correctness. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND MERRY CHRIST-MAS TO EVERYONE!
