References to God in the Pledge of Allegiance and in our national motto were added in the 50s, not by our founders. Our founders were mostly Deists, not mainstream, practicing Christians, and referred to God only to appease the uneducated masses that needed religion to feel good. The motto, "In God we trust," has been upheld by the Supreme Court because it has "lost through rote repetition any significant religious content". The Constitution purposely does not include God or Christianity.

We are a country founded on freedom from religion and separation of church and state, and our President, of all people, should maintain that distinction. Religious beliefs is a matter of personal preference, same as ice cream flavors, music groups, or movies. A President urging the people to subscribe to his religious beliefs is no more unconstitutional than a President urging people to eat vanilla ice cream or watch "Avatar." It becomes unconstitutional if he tries to make it mandatory under law, e.g. Any American who doesn't listen to the Grateful Dead are enemies of the state; any American who is not a Christian is an enemy of the state, etc.
