@GoddessRockinGuitar Great point... if I eat tuna or even 7 lbs of lima beans then tell people "I shouldn't have ate that shit" (I mean shirt) then why wear a shirt that has holes in it when you have a new one at home that has scorch burns from a dryer that was powered by gasoline instead of electricity, of course it was my cats fault for getting caught up in the dryers electrical cable then knocked over the mason jar of fuel which shattered into the open "hot spot" turning it into Flamedryer
I was lucky enough to see REO the summer of 1988. It was an outside gig with general admission seating. I pressed my way up to the very front-directly in front of Gary and I kept my ground as the rain poured down and my soon to be ex girlfriend was pulled out of the front row by security because she was getting crushed. When they played Ridin' The Storm- the rain stopped!! Glad I saw him play that night.
gary has both for a on the side of doing dad duty his a father to a hi s son Eric and his daughter Alisa.gary's daughter Alsia is in the army and every day and night gary always looks at a picture of her by her bedside. he sometimes sits on her bed and holds her hair brush that she used when she was little . we both don't know when she will come home but we hope soon.all we do is pray every day that she is safe
Have to ever had to be in a band with an alcoholic? I have and is not something you can endure for long. Gary had the choice and chose the bottle.I would take a hard core drug addict over a smelly, Babbling, Repeating him self over and over alcoholic any day......it was nice to see him again and it seems he hasn't lost anything over the years.I will always be a fan of his playing. -
i'm so happy to see an older, but happy, Gary Richrath enjoying the gifts and talents he gave to reo ;as well as, 90% of the songs, stylings, arrangements and most of the joy, power and positive attitude all his songs and music light me up with--keep pushin and roll with the changes saved my life, as a young man going through a long very hard and isolated travail-I LOVE YA GARY-YOU ARE REO TO US
Gary Richrath was the talent in REO. Anyone can sing as American Idol proves every year, but few can write great rock songs. Every song worth a flying sheet that Speedwagon every played was written by GR.
Kevin Cronin hates this guy..I saw the VH1 documentary and hes totally mean to Gary in the studio..thats too bad..because Gary is the coolest guy out of the whole band..same w/Chicago
Don't you just hate it when egos get in the way of a good rock band. There was room enough for both Kevin and Gary. The "direction" they both had for the band worked pretty darn well for 15 years.
jr452, that's a good one. Kevin the "Cokey-Monster" talking about Gary and his drinking. Mr. Richrath got him into the band twice and for that was forced out by spock's lisp-speaking son. REO was Gary, Alan, Neil, Greg and Kevin. They started to decline the day Greg Philbin left the band and that's a fact. They were great with Terry Luttrell singing before Kevin too. That's when they rocked, that's why they were called the SPEEDWAGON. Because Gary blazed away on guitar like the gunslinger he is.
Gary is a friend and I worked for them in the eighties... My heart was breaking watching the nucleus of the band, Gary, losing control to Kevin who wanted to do 'ballads' therefore changing the sound of REO all together. Love Gary.
@longcoolwoman9 Who in their right mind could work with Kevin Cronin (& his sissy love songs & ballads) & NOT have a drinking problem. Gary got screwed!!! (& YOU KNOW BY WHO MR. CRONIN) Richrath, your Da BOMB!!!
@ExDemocrat64 a major drinking problem effects everyone around you,,and the band ... quit trying to shift blame onto others ... makes you sound like a 5 year old
there is no REO without the big 'R' richrath was the only talent in the band.. If he doesnt make it to the rock n roll hall of fame .. at least his liver should!!!
does anybody know what gary is doing now, last time i heard, he was living in the woodlands, texas, next to that fucked up thing they call the pavilion, sweat box, misquito invested place, i would rather see a band in a walmart parking lot then go to that place. for real
Your right it was Kevin's fault that Gary could not get clean, and continue with REO... I hope the best for Gary, he was a founding member and part of the REO tradition.
I thought it was high time I shared this footage after all these years! Check out the one-handed playin on this song!! Thats my favorite part. Hope you come home soon Gary, We all miss you!!! See Ya! Ron
See, that's how it's done. No one plays Golden Country like Gary does. I saw him play in Austin, Tx, around the same time too. The current REO shouldn't even attempt this song anymore. It's just not the same. By the way, bending those notes like that, and giving them vibrato, for a long time in a song is tiring. I play gtr too. He has huge fat fingers (I shook his hand, I know!) and I could "feel" his great strength. Great footage!!!!!!!
Another winner. Hack64, I know that you're a guy and everything, so maybe Gary doesn't have quite the same effect on you as he does me. I'll tell you what, if I were close enough to get this footage, I would have lost my composure completely. That was magical.
Hack64, thanks for posting the videos. Thanks to friend of the band-Ron for videoing (is that a word?) the 3 songs. THANKS Eunice for having such a gifted, talented,& sweeeeet son!!!
I have seen Gary in concert over 10 times in the past and all I can say is he has gotten even better..if that is even possible! Nobody rocks like he does.

wouldn't even consider seeing REO without Gary, cool footage. They once were a rock band, the pussy ballads made them huge but they also killed them.

This footage is so cool. Good to see the heart and balls of REO is still doing well

PS..Yes, Gary was drinking heavily then but it was due to the fact that he knew the band was changing and not in the direction he was heading...
