Some make the Bible into some sort of magic book which has it's own life and is guaranteed to answer all questions for all people. I think that the bible is definitely a book which points people to and teaches about the ministry of Jesus. It is the first step in getting to understand what Jesus is all about and is not a "answers all" substitute for prayer. Reading it does not automatically impart wisdom and understanding. That comes with the life experience and prayer as a Christian.
I think you identify a good point with respect to many Christians today and the bible. I have often thought that many people today are being turned by the fundamentalist bible thumpers. Many of these who profess Christianity even use the bible as a political cause tool which has the real effect of dividing people and actually driving people away. Rather than encouraging people to read the bible and learn about Jesus they legalistically thrust it in their face and beat them over the head with it
