I have to try this out for my family and parents. My Mom & Dad will be like "Wow, our son actually knows how to make wonton soup??!" Lol I have been making American food lately and I'm America born Chinese.. so yeah lol. Cool videos and thanks lot!
i LOVE this recipe. with the rain and cold weather we've been having, i'm so going to try this out. i wonder if you can make the wontons all vegetarian or substitute the meat wih shrimp.
@spiceitupwsaga You could make these vegetarian with just some cabbage, carrots, green onion and mushrooms; and the shrimp would work too. Thank you :)
@spiceitupwsaga You can use vegetarian "meat", which looks like ground pork or tuna. Comes in a tube, like some ground beef. Anyway, use all the same other ingredients, i.e., salt, pepper, ginger, garlic, etc. Wrap and cook normally in boiling water till the float, then transfer to your soup. This makes the soup less cloudy due to the flour coming off that's used to separate the wrappers.
thanks cliffcox66, great suggestion, i'm definitely going to try out the vegetarian meat. my good friend is vegan and he showed me a product similar to the one you're speaking of.
I use your wonton recipe for the actual dumplings. I've discovered that beef + chicken broth is roughly what many restaurants seem to use (careful with the beef flavor, it can quickly become overpowering). I also found that when I boil the wontons, they can be rather flimsy. SO I started doubling the wonton wrappers together before adding the meat and shaping the wonton. Still flimsy but by luck I found out a day later in the fridge that they had become firmer like a restaurant's. Thank you!
@Hawkknight88 Thank you for these ideas. Some brands of wonton wrappers are thicker than others and some restaurants make their own as well. If you want them thicker you can also use eggroll wrappers and then cut them into squares. Thank you so much for trying this and commenting :)
Thank you so much for adding this recipe. I was waiting for this one. I'm so glad I don't have to use shrimp or oyster sauce as my hubby and I are not fans of any seafood. :)
@qochemist I'm pretty sure this will work, though I've never used the veggie protien before. You could also do a veggie wonton with cabbage, carrots, and green onion as well :)
The restaurants I like include things like broccoli and carrot in their wonton soup. How should I cook those if I want to add them in? Should I just boil them in the broth until tender, or steam them and add them in later?
@prettyinpunk666 I just boil them in the broth until slightly tender. Depending on the size you cut them, you may want to put them in about 5 minutes or so before the wonton soup is done :)
do you pre boil the wontons?
