Ma made such a fine, and beautiful speech at the 2006 LGBT rally in Taipei. I was truly impressed. And now, to back-pedal on such an important human rights issue? I am very, very disappointed.
Taiwan is a really gay country and Taipei is the GAYEST city i have ever lived in, and I have lived in "gay" cities like Vancouver. The violence and hatred directed at homosexuals in the west is very rare here. The difficulty in Taiwan comes with family pressure to have a traditional family which leads to very obvious gay behavior but closed lips. Legalizing gay marriage here (for which most Taiwanese dont care either way) would do a lot to help this.
The gay debate is not a debate. It is obvious. There ARE gay people in Taiwan. Taiwan is a democracy. EVERYONE should be allowed equality under the law. You cannot ask "the people" to decide. Gays are a minority. How can a majority decide for a hated minority? You cannot vote on basic human rights. Why can Taiwan not see this? Taiwan has a HUGE gay population.

dear harvydude,
Mr. Ma have won the election.
Whether he will rise gay-friendky policy practically or not, however, we all wait and see. We hope he won't say a lot, but do a little.
