Zen Buddhism (Zen is simply the Japanese pronunciation of Chinese 禪, pronounced by the various Chinese languages as Chan, Sim, Sen, Zeu, etc.) was established in China, the Shaolin temple around the 7th century AD. But you are correct that it is not just a Chinese concept, it is a Buddhist concept shared by all the cultures in the Chinese Cultural Sphere: China, Korea, Japan.

Gautama did not invent Zen. It was Bodhidharma who is credited with bringing Dhyana (Zen) to China. But Dhyana was simply meditation methods. The school of Zen Buddhism you see today is build around the initial teaching and is developed by the Chinese and can only be found in Sinicized cultures. The wheel came from Mesopotamia, we have silk, paper, compasses, sails, and stirrups. Anyways, by "Zen" I meant the contemplative nature of Chinese dances.
