OMG, I blocked in one of these on Okinawa in the early 60's. The crew chief took me for a tour of her. Never saw another until this day ( 2011 ) She is still beautiful. Thanks for sharing, it brought back a time almost forgotten.
Yes we had four of these in the RAF Easleigh, Nairobi airbase. When you've done guard-duty under these giants, this video brings tears to your eye's!"
My cousin and I were in the ATC in 1964 and we flew in one from RAF Abingdon on an air experience flight, mainly circuits and bumps but all good fun. We used to sit on a box on the flight deck for takeoffs and landings. RAF Abingdon was 10 miles away and we used to cycle. We also went on parachute drops over RAF Benson or Weston on the Green. I think at the time we had the most air experience hours of our squadron by far. Good memories.
@MrRose49 So were you in 150 City of Oxford ATC Squadron based in Marston? I was in as soon as I was old enough and was always after flights at Abingdon, Colerne, Lyneham etc. My auntie lived right under the flight path at Abingdon and I'll swear a Bev clouted her TV aerial once ... I was 17 in '64 so had left to join the RAF. Good days.
This brings back some great memories of when I was a kid, I used to love this museum and the best part of the day was always visiting the cockpit of the Beverly. It's just how I remember her. Thanks for the happy memories!
Great video! It is so good to know that one of these majestic aircraft will be preserved. As an ex Southend lad, I have fond memories of climbing all over XB261 as a boy and still remember that terrible day in 1989 when she was unceremoniously JCBd to death! That was a sad day indeed!
I did quite a few drops from these planes with UK Airborne Forces between 1960 to62 great plane we called her the flying boxcar .CG Tauranga New Zealand.
The Bev came into it's own at RAF Labuan, North Borneo. The rear clamshell doors were removed and of she went dropping stuff to the British troops in the jungle...perfect for the job.
Engine exhaust pipes,( stubs), were a weak point and often detached in flight. They used to say you could fly from El Adem to Nairobi by following the trail of stubbs on the desert!.......I say fly but the only reason the lumbering darling ever got anywhere was by the Earth rotating beneath her....an ace kite.
We used to have these when i was in the army in1962they always used to throw the transport out on parachutes just after we jumped used to scare the shxx out of me .
The joke in RAF circles was that the designer once saw a dutch barn blow by in a gale..... other urban legends have it that a Beverly turned up at an airshow which was attended by USAF officers. One of them was alleged to have said 'Is that the biggest airplane you got?' to which the reply was 'you should have seen the one we brought it out in!'.....
I remember this plane sat near the road at Paull when I was kid in the 70's painted as 55secs on -sat going to ruin for years before it went to the long gone beverley army transport museum...It's back at Paull now at the museum-and theyre trying their best to keep it at least looking as it once did
Wonderful to see one preserved - It was the first large RAF aircraft I ever flew in. From RAF Thorney Island on an air experience flight when in the ATC 1960/61. Remember climbing up into the tail section of the fuselage up a ladder..! Some flight - very noisy (as I remember) and a strange sort of skiddy/swervey landing .... I went on to join the RAF - but that first flight in the Bev remains a vivid memory - now trying to drum up support for XH558.Keep the Vulcan flying !
what a monster !!! Would love to do the type training for this bird
